Sunderland fans throw objects at Cardiff players while ‘fooligans’ clash with each other next to coaches following the Championship game.
The Bluebirds moved four points clear of the relegation zone as Mark Harris’ goal gave them a 1-0 victory at the Stadium of Light.
Cardiff might have led at the break but Joe Ralls’ penalty was saved by Anthony Patterson, with the Bluebirds missing a numver of first-half chances.
Sunderland put in a better performance after Cardiff’s goal but never really looked like levelling the scoreline, with the win lifting Cardiff up to 14th in the Championship, with Sunderland placing 13th.
Cardiff’s win means they have now won three consecutive league matches against Sunderland for the first time since December 1959.
The Black Cats’ defeat sees a second successive home defeat for Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray, who made four changes to the side that beat bottom-placed Huddersfield 2-0 in midweek with Abdoullah Ba given a first start, while Ellis Simms was also recalled with Dan Neil and Jack Clarke.
Cardiff City interim boss Mark Hudson – who expects to be named the Bluebirds’ permanent boss – made one change to the side beaten 2-1 by Watford on Wednesday, with Sheyi Ojo coming in for Andy Rinomhota.
It was amazing surprising the game had still been goalless come half time.
Just five minutes in there had been a fantastic chance for both teams with Sunderland winger Jack Clarke seeing his effort drop just wide after he was allowed to cut inside from the left.
The next attack saw Cardiff somehow not scored when Ojo wanted an extra touch in an unmarked position when he was picked out by Harris, leaving it for Sunderland to clear away.
An even greater chance came for the visitors when Danny Batth brought Ojo down when the forward looked on course to score following an misplaced Bailey Wright pass into the area.
After a yellow was handed to Batth, Cardiff’s captain Ralls missed the spot kick with goalkeeper Anthony Patterson diving to his left to turn the ball away.
There was still plenty time for further opportunities prior to the break with Sunderland’s Amad Diallo having an effort cleared off the line by Perry Ng and Cardiff striker Harris chipping over Patterson and wide when he was played in by Niels Nkounkou.
Sunderland continued to flop and it lead to Cardiff making a breakthrough four minutes into the second half, even if there had been claims for offside from the home side.
Mahlon Romeo scuffed his shot, after running deep into the Sunderland half, being turned in by Harris from close range when he had got in behind the defence.
Sunderland gave a better showing following the introductions of Corry Evans and Alex Pritchard just before the hour.
Pritchard’s free-kick curled into the side-netting after as Tony Mowbray’s men tried to find a leveller.
Striker Ellis Simms, on loan from Everton and back from injury, flicked a header over the bar with around 30 minutes left as Sunderland’s fans sensed there may be an equaliser.
The Black Cats produced lacklustre attempts, Cardiff goalkeeper Ryan Allsop wasn’t seriously tested, though did have to hold an effort from substitute Elliot Embleton with five minutes remaining.
Sunderland’s Tony Mowbray: “Aspects of our performance were poor. Cardiff had control in the first 20 minutes but we broke away and still had some good chances. Playing at home we have some bigger expectations to deal with.
“We also made a few changes to try to freshen it up (from the midweek win at Huddersfield). We are all disappointed. We were trying to get back-to-back wins after a good win away from home.”
Cardiff’s interim manager Mark Hudson: “You want your strikers to score goals. He works so hard on and off the pitch. He missed one (in the) first half, but I said it will come. He got his moment and I am delighted for him. His energy and work ethic is brilliant. Sparky (Harris) has got a dead leg, nothing else, we wanted to protect him and we got him off – we trusted the squad.
“The only thing missing in the first half was the goal. Second half we knew they were a good side, we knew we would suffer in moments. We had to defend together and we did that. I felt we could create with our players and we did that. The fans have come all this way, what a trek, spending money to get here, so it was nice to show our appreciation to them at the end.”
Throughout the game, and despite Sunderland issuing a warning over objects being thrown in stadiums, it seems the home fans let emotions get the better of them, throwing a number of objects at Cardiff players.
Then some fooligans tried to fight each other after the game, in between and around the coaches waiting for and including some supporters.
This is what social media users had to say as Sunderland fans throw objects at Cardiff players and comments were posted about the ‘fights’…

@georgelccfc: Shame on those fans
@Adam54799403: It won’t get spoke about because it isn’t the south stand
@healeytowers: @SunderlandAFC up to you to sort this out. Easy to work out who’s sitting in those seats.
@RyanCampbell89: Loads of wankers lately. Lads struggling to find their seats (still baffles me how grown adults can’t find a row and seat number) talking during the minutes silence, which turned into an applause to drown them out. Blokes a few rows behind have boo’d the past 4/5 games anarl
@rhysmurphy77: No one will speak about it because it’s not the roker end
@dan_cope14: @SunderlandAFC I assume you’ll be looking into this
@AnthLR91: There’s a new generation of little wankers in our midst at the moment n they need calling out by people like.
@TheLeckwithMole: Thank God they stole money and vapes from the away fans! Disgraceful @SunderlandAFC.
@DomZvirblys: South stand will get blamed for this
@coeImarshy: bit odd
@CaerdyddDevils: And they banned away fans from having coins 😂😂
@JRS_1927: But you can’t take vapes or money into the away end, gimps.
@DeanoCummings85: about the only thing their keeper had to do all afternoon. On a more serious note, our fan base is littered with arseholes that need weeding out and chasing. From booing the taking of the knee, to lobbing paper (a nar its arnly paper) onto the pitch all game and at the oppo. Shite
@_toosb: These morons need finding and banning. Fucking arseholes.
@LiamAngus: booing the knee and hoying stuff at people, we’re lucky not to be in the prem or we’ll be ripped to shreds in the media every week for this total loser behaviour
@Fazzzzerr: hypocrites
@TheCantonEnd: Weird behaviour
@past_sunderland: Vile bastards. Did the same towards that Cardiff sub as well. Need to give our heads a wobble
@Travis_CCFC: Sort your own fans out before away fans @SunderlandAFC
@IceWithNoLemon: Well @SunderlandAFC – What are your thoughts on this? I take it you are going to accept you can’t control home fans now?
@drcwwells: Appalling. What is wrong with people 🤬
@OwenG_CCFC: But the away fans are the issue apparently
@Sarahleck5: Yet away fans have their coins taken off them @SunderlandAFC Home fans next then?
@chrisbrad75: Terrible fans. Leaving on 83 as well. Thought better of Sunderland. Good pies in the ground tho
@2022benclay: You lot moan like fuck about away fans! Embarrassed for you! You wanna take vapes off away fans 😭😭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@BraddersCCFC: Fucking maggots complaining about away fans chucking stuff at them but here they are with their own fans filming other Sunderland fans doing exactly that. #PUSB
@rhonddaborn: Their shots are like their strikers shots . Missed by fucking miles

Absolute fucking state of this, after the carry on we’ve had with away fans launching stuff. Some complete and utter twats turning up at games at the minute and we’d honestly be better off without them. Fuck off. https://t.co/eJZ3CDlJnt
