Stoke City fans decided to come up with a savage chant aimed at Nathan Jones and Luton Town during Tuesday night’s fixture.
The Hatters boss says he will speak to Southampton about their managerial vacancy on Wednesday, but insists that a move to the Premier League club is “not a done deal”.
Speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio after Tuesday’s 2-0 Championship loss at Stoke City, the Welshman said it was a “wonderful honour” to be approached.
Luton have given Southampton permission to speak with the 49-year-old after the Saints sacked Ralph Hasenhuttl on Monday.
“I’ve got a wonderful relationship with everyone at the football club,” said Jones. “These things sometimes happen.
“I’ve had a number of enquiries during my six years at Luton [across two spells as manager] but I’ve always loved my relationship with everyone.
“I hope the fans understand why I’m going for the chat because it’s a different world in the Premier League. I want to be there one day, whether that’s with Luton or with someone else.
“It’s just an opportunity to go and chat and to find out if it is right for me.
“This is a wonderful project we have here, with great people from top to bottom who give me absolutely everything, and that’s going to be tough to leave.”

Up against a Stoke side he was manager of for almost 10 months in 2019, Jones’ side conceded two goals inside the first 13 minutes – both coming from left-wing crosses by Morgan Fox.
Nick Powell arrived late in the box to head in the opener before Tom Lockyer, who was under pressure from Liam Delap, sent the ball into his own net.
Luton couldn’t make the most of their valuable chances, with striker Carlton Morris sending a shot straight at Potters goalkeeper Jack Bonham before the break and an unmarked Lockyer hit the post from eight yards after the interval.
Stoke manager Alex Neil responded to Saturday’s home loss to Birmingham by making six changes to his starting XI.
His line-up had a much better impact, as the Potters won at home for only the third time in 10 attempts this season to move into mid-table.
Among the incomers was centre-back Harry Souttar, who made his first start for the Potters in 367 days after recovering from a serious knee injury sustained while on international duty with Australia.
Stoke City boss Alex Neil told BBC Radio Stoke:
“I’m happy with the result. The result was the most important thing.
“The batch of last home games have been extremely frustrating for everyone. It was important we didn’t give any cheap goals away and it was important we got our noses in front early.
“It wasn’t a great game but there were two moments of quality: the two crosses from Morgan Fox.
“A great header from Nick for the first one and great movement from Liam for the second one. That was the difference in the game.”

This is what social media users said as Stoke fans come up with a savage chant aimed at Nathan Jones and Luton on Tuesday night…
@ST4_Cal: Quiet all game they were
@mrbt88: The fact we were down 2 nil after 14 minutes and were still louder than the home fans is embarrassing. Don’t get me wrong; there was next to no atmosphere last night, it was drab as hell, but jeeeeez, think Stoke fans were watching Netflix all game.
@NewportHatter: I’m fine with that, would do exactly the same if shoe was on other foot so can’t complain 🤷♂️
@SarahHill06: This was the highlight of the night. Not the best game both sides were poor.
@R_J_M_11: Why are all the stoke fans dressed as red seats?
@jamesltfc02: The obsession stoke fans have with us, considering they stole OUR manager is quite frankly bizzare 🤷♂️
@StaceySellars4: “How shit must you be we’re higher than you” was sung back. Only time Stoke sung by the way. Most boring stadium in the world.
@therealLJH679: Did you whisper it? Or more realistically not sung at all, better than climbing through someone’s back yard to get in a stadium, tinpot “He’s leaving agaaaiinnn” 😂😂
@bgbddt: Wheres the noise coming from? There’s nobody there
@charliescfc_: corner sang majority of the game as per, rest of the ground pretty poor until then but iv never seen a worse following than luton, sat down and didn’t sing once 🤣
@Darwen88: This actually really made me laugh.
@JM11_GEE: actually very funny Stoke fans 😂
@ScudderKieran: Got a lot of time for this tbh 😂
@ScfcJ18: Tbf it was the 90th minute and just because we have a 31k capacity stadium and get 20k at home everyone’s crying
@AshGower1990: He’ll be back next season once the scummers have been relegated
