Neco Williams and Oliver Glasner make their feelings clear about Nottingham Forest’s disallowed goal in their 0-0 draw with Tottenham.

The Forest boss said to the media that VAR shouldn’t have got involved in ruling out a potentially match-winning goal from Williams.

He added that after a number of replays, it failed to definitively show that Williams had handled the ball claiming match officials “guessed” the decision.

Premier League Match Centre said: “VAR checked the referee’s call of goal to Nottingham Forest – and determined that Williams handled the ball immediately before scoring and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”

Forest’s Oliver Glasner said, as per ESPN:

“The referee allowed the goal and I watched it back, I told my analyst to show me all the angles.

“I watched five or six different angles and to be fair, from one angle you can guess that the ball touched the arm because the shirt moves a little bit, but it’s not clear if it’s the ball or Tonali on the goal line.

“I think the VAR can’t intervene when he is guessing. It was not clear and obvious.

“We had a briefing before the season that the threshold for VAR intervention this year should be very high, which is why this is a wrong intervention.

“I think it was a clear penalty when Neco Williams was fouled by Mo Kudus. We didn’t feel that some decisions were in our favor today.

“If it’s not 100% clear, stick to the on-field decisions. This is the inconsistency today.

“I told the referee after the game that I felt the goal should have stood.”

Neco Williams said to Sky Sports about his disallowed goal:

“It’s a goal.

“VAR is there for when there’s a clear and obvious error – and for me, that’s not clear and obvious. I’ve seen the images back and not one moment I thought I handballed it.

“I headed it in between my arms. If you pause it, it’s going to look like it hit my arm, but it didn’t hit my arm.

“I think a lot of decisions didn’t go our way today. But this is football.”

Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi to Sky Sports:

“Disappointed for the result. The performance, very happy, considering we start to work together last Thursday for the first time, for the first day. We played well. We can improve the decision with the last pass.

“The situation with Marmoush, where he shoots, Robertson was alone behind him overlapping, and if we improve in the last decision, in the last third we can score many, many goals because we have players with big qualities.

“Now is a tough moment to accept this result because I think we play well.”

On if he was worried, he added, as per ESPN: “No. We could have scored three or four goals today, because if you take the wrong decision, you don’t score.

“But for me it is a chance to score.

“I think we played well, but in the last third we have to improve. We have to take the better decisions. We have to keep more calm when we are very close to doing something important in the last third.

“I remember the chance when [Omar] Marmoush shot at goal [in the second half], the way we had [Andy] Robertson overlapping. If we take the right decision and we play with Robertson then on the second post there is [Mohammed] Kudus to score like this.

“Or how many crosses went over the second post? From Mathys Tel, two times, Sávio, one time. Sávio I think it’s the last decision.

“We are not happy because we didn’t win, but I think this is the right spirit and the right way to move on in this moment.

“Because we started just last Thursday to work [all] together and to create, to build the team, to build the organization. It’s not enough the paper, the transfer market.”
