Charlton player calls out disgusting abuse sent to him after win against Stevenage on penalties

Charlton Athletic player Sean Clare calls out disgusting abuse sent to him online after his side’s win against Stevenage on penalties.

Addicks goalkeeper Joe Wollacott was the hero as his side avoided a scare by winning 5-4 on spot kikcs in the Carabao Cup after a 1-1 draw.

The League One side advanced to the fourth round, with Scott Fraser netting the winning penalty after Jake Taylor saw his effort saved by the Ghanaian.

Boro’s Luke Norris had scored from the spot in the first half and it was on course to be the decisive moment until Chuks Aneke hit home in the 87th minute.

Stevenage were gifted the opener in the 22nd minute when Charlton defender Richard Chin handled in the area and Norris coolly converted the penalty.

Stevenage fought on, with Taylor forcing Wollacott into a stop before striking the ball against the bar minutes later.

Charlton were much improved after the break and with three minutes left on the clock, substitute Aneke finished to send the game to a penalty shootout.

After four successful spot-kicks, Wollacott went to his left to prevent Taylor’s from going in, before Fraser made no mistake to send the Addicks through.

After the game, Charlton player Sean Clare calls out the disgusting abuse sent to him after the win against Stevenage on penalties.

His posted via his Instagram stories a message that he received on Tuesday night, in response to it he wrote: “Do you reckon he’s annoyed?”

The message, which continues some words that may offend, read: “Watch it ye next season we will come to ur fucking stadium and fucking hand it too you.

“In ur Head all fucking Game u defo cried at half time u fucking puf.

“Never seen someone so gay give it large.

“Further more shite fucking fans cockney wankers silent all game then u score and celebrate like u won the champions league.

Ben Garner was pleased his side kept playing football as the Addicks came from behind to advance to the Fourth Round of the Carabao Cup.

Garner said: “It was a tough game. A really tough game. It’s a difficult place to come. Stevenage are really good at what they do. I was really pleased with how we kept pushing, second-half. It’s hard to break that down. We created a couple of good opportunities, especially off set-pieces.

“It was fantastic to see Chuks get the goal. Then we’re pushing to try and get the winner and we did it on penalties.”

Charlton won the shootout 5-4 with Joe Wollacott saving from Jake Taylor before Fraser’s calm finisher.

“The standard of penalties was absolutely brilliant,” said Garner. “I don’t remember seeing five better than that in a penalty shootout. It is a great save from JoJo to top it all off.

“A lot of the lads practise penalties all the time. You go into a shootout thinking ‘are they going to do what they normally do?’, and they did. They showed great composure, great confidence and really good technique.”

The win means the Addicks will be in Thursday’s Fourth Round draw and Garner was asked what draw he was hoping for.

He said: “As big as possible. We’ll take what we get. But I’d love to give those supporters a huge tie against a Premier League side, either home or away. We spoke about that before the game – make sure that when that draw is happening on Thursday that we’re there and got a chance of drawing a big tie.

“As big a team as possible or a local derby that is an exciting one for the fans. We’ll see who it is and prepare in great detail to try and win the game.”
