Sky Sports slammed by viewers for being ‘biased’ towards Salford in playoff game against Stockport

Sky Sports have been slammed by viewers for being ‘biased’ towards Salford City in the League Two playoff game against Stockport County.

The Ammies picked up a first-leg victory over their injury hit opposition, with the only goal of the game coming, came thanks to Matt Smith’s scrappy strike, and he’s certainly claiming it.

Smith beat Fraser Horsfall to Elliot Watt’s cross.

The visitors were without their top scorer Kyle Wootton, but they defended hard to give themselves a better chance of winning the second leg.

Stockport’s Ben Hinchliffe made a crucial save in the second half to stop Conor McAleny, but the Hatters just couldn’t find that goal.

However, throughout the game, Salford and Sky Sports were criticised, with fans suggesting that the broadcaster forgetting to talk about Stockport.

A lot of the talk between reporters, pundits and staff comes with it being nine years since ex-Manchester United players Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt bought Salford – who were then a Northern Premier League outfit.

But now the club are in with an excellent chance of promotion to League One and Roy Keane and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were in attendance at the Peninsula Stadium to watch on.

Salford striker Matt Smith speaking to Sky Sports:

“[The goal] came off my shoulder in the end, I didn’t know a whole lot about it. The player was a bit focussed on wrestling me, so just happy to see it go in.

“It was a battle, we knew it was going to be. We had to stand up to that test and show that side of our game. It’s not always how we like to play, but tonight we had to show a different side to us.

“We want to be amongst it, that was our aim. A lot of edgy games. But the main thing is we’re in there and anything can happen now. It’s only half a job. They came close a couple of times. We have an edge but we’ve got another huge 90 minutes at Stockport.”

Salford’s Neil Wood:

“I guess I’m pleased with a 1-0, although it probably could and should have been more than that. We had two or three other good chances which we should have stuck away, so it’s possibly a bit frustrating we didn’t capitalise a bit more. I’m pleased with the way we played tonight, but it certainly won’t be an easy task for us next weekend.

“We’re looking forward to it and the lads definitely won’t be phased by playing in front of a big crowd over there. We’ve still got a job to do, but this team is learning all the time and we’ll go to Stockport with no fear.”

Stockport’s Dave Challinor:

“We’ll take on the second leg in the same attacking way we have done throughout the season. We’ve been very consistent all the way through and we’ve ground out some big results when we’ve needed to. I think it’s 10 times we’ve won by two goals or more this season so far, so we’ve got to go and do that again now. This just goes to show how close this league is, though.

“I think all the four teams in the play-offs are so evenly matched, so that means whoever wins the big prize, it’s going to be fine margins. It was a close game tonight, a really edgy game at times, but it was important for us that we leave here tonight still very much in the tie. We now know exactly what we need to do next Saturday, and the lads have got the belief that we can get through to Wembley. It’s going to be a brilliant atmosphere at Edgeley Park, so it’s up to us now to get the job done.”

As mentioned, Sky Sports were slammed by viewers for being biased towards Salford in the playoff game against Stockport…

@FreidiDog: Own goal. Was not bundled in by smith as they keep saying. Sky sports so biased towards salford all game its embarrasing.

@arvey86: Fair play to Salford they played well. However the biased commentary on sly sports it’s a joke. How does the class of 92 semen taste?

@jackbyrne91: Commentators off to clean himself up

@DavidPWatkins: Are these sky sports commentators Salford fans. We are playing awfully but these commentators are having a nightmare and sound in love with Salford

@Charlie34681926: Sky bumming these salford players 😭😭😭

@Jamitay1977: These commentators on Sky Sports Salford are awful! @StockportCounty

@lucyshatwell: how many salford players are these sky commentators shagging??

@OliPlays13: Sky/Salford’s attempts to push a rivalry with Stockport is genuinely hilarious

@Cufc1986Matt: Nice to see Sky have microphones next to the Salford fans to make look like they actually have fans 😂

@red___square: terrible biased commentary

@k1mberg: Shame your commentary feed didn’t work, just as well you could utilise Salfords media teams coverage.

@SCFCBlue2: Almost hear the disappointment in the commentators voice as Hinchliffe saves it 🥴

@ollie_long93: Sky will love it even more if they stay in the league . Wrexham and Salford will be the only league 2 teams on the Tele

@jackbyrne91: There are two teams in this game. Let your commentators know. Not stopped going on about Salford or the United ex players in the stands.

@NTFCNathan: I bet you lot are creaming over this game right now

@TheBoiledEgg: Need Stockport to save football

@damianbeaumont: For those watching at home there are actually 2 teams playing despite what the crowd shots, sycophantic commentary and focus will show you.

@KjaerTravel: Tin pot club. Stockport needs to save football from this Lim / Class of 92 vanity project. #SkyFootball #EFL

@owenhb17: We get it, ex-Man United players are there.

@ntjeffers: Sky media love Salford because of the connection to old Man U players who happen to work for Sky. They’re flogging a dead horse tho because no one is interested in Salford outside of the class of 92 bubble and a handful of fans
