Watford come from behind to make it five defeats in six for bottom of the table Preston North End on Tuesday night.

Callum Lang had put the Lilywhites ahead after just 6 minutes, before the Hornets fought back with Edo Kayembe getting the leveller with half an hour of the second half to go, then Mamadou Doumbia with a winner for Watford on 76 minutes.

So after six games played, Watford are 11th with 8 points while Preston are 24th with just 3 points. A long way to go, but more pressure on Paul Heckingbottom, with fans losing patience…

Watford’s Alessio Dionisi said, as per the club website:

“Tonight is a big, big result.

“In the first half, my team played so-so and it was not easy.

“In the second half, we played well.

“The reaction in the second half was perfect and I’m very happy for this result.

“The result is good for everyone. For my players, for my staff, for the supporters.”

He added: “To arrive at a good result, we need everyone.”

“My team is very young. We need our supporters in every moment, in positive moments and in negative moments.

“The first half was negative. In the first half, my players needed our support. We didn’t stay as a unit and we didn’t stay compact.

“In the second half we played better, and the result is fantastic.”

Watford will aim for two in a row at The Vic when they host Stoke City on Saturday (September 12, 3:00pm KO).

“It’s important to stay in every moment together,” Dionisi said.

“Now it’s important to recover, because on Saturday there is another match.”

Preston’s Paul Heckingbottom, as per the club website:

“We’ve conceded two really poor goals from our point of view. One, how they got in behind in the first instance, leaving a runner and we should clear it.

“The second one, it broke well for them but we had plenty of bodies back. One man in the box, two defenders, one goalkeeper, and we don’t come to deal with the ball. He’s six yards out when he heads it, which is really poor from us.

“They made three subs at half-time, but I still felt really comfortable. I felt we had the best chances again, and then all of a sudden they get a goal that we should clear.

“We had a couple more chances when it was 1-1, when Dela was clean through, pressing, pushing, but we didn’t deal with that cross into the box. It’s a totally different game then.

“You get what you deserve, regardless of performance levels. We should have been out of sight. The goals are what’s cost us, along with not taking our chances at the other end.

“Those goals are really poor and unless we as a group sort that out, we’re not going to get what we deserve from games.”
