Sheffield Wednesday v Millwall: Fans invade pitch, trouble in the stands and outside the ground

Sheffield Wednesday v Millwall saw fans invade the pitch, while there was also trouble in the stands and outside the ground.

The game itself saw Millwall score twice in two minutes to avoid an upset against the Championship’s bottom side Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

The result sees Millwall 3rd with 56 points from 32 games played, and 3 points from 2nd place Coventry, and 5 points from leaders Middlesbrough.

Sheffield Wednesday are 24th with -7 points, and could be relegated next week by their rivals Sheffield United, should the Blades win the local derby.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen told BBC Radio Sheffield: “I think it was a fantastic game for the boys. We played against a strong Millwall team, a top team in the Championship, and we knew they are maybe the most physical team in the league for set-pieces, long balls, second balls and duels.

“How we managed this game today, big respect to our guys. For the defensive stuff, we were really well organised and we managed all the long balls, and we also managed to win a lot of the second balls.

“Today, compared to some of the other games, we also had some power when we won the ball to play forward, to run forward, to get high up on the pitch and to create something so it’s a big step in the right direction.”

Pedersen, per Sky Sports:

“A tough, tough opponent today, a physical monster opponent. How much physical power they could bring into the game.

“We knew it’s a top team from the league, we know they are physically strong, we know the vertical play, second ball, set-pieces that maybe the best in the league. But how we manage this game today, how we defend, how we press, how we protect on goal and all the set-pieces. It was very positive.

“I think also how we manage the game offensively today was, it was strong because we know Millwall with the physical power is a fantastic pressing team.

“And how we played a little bit more direct, how we run more with them and how we won a lot of second ball against them. So I think in general, a strong performance from our four senior players and seven young guys.”

Millwall manager Alex Neil told BBC Radio London: “I think I would sum it up as job done. Delighted to get the job done.

“I thought Sheffield Wednesday made it difficult for us. I thought we made it difficult for ourselves at times.

“Coming here there’s a lot of expectation that you’re just going to turn up. The simple fact is, apart from the last game when they played a back four, a lot of the games have been really tight.

“It’s not been plain sailing or easy for any team coming here and I didn’t expect it to be any different for us, and it was exactly what I expected.”

Neil, per Sky Sports:

“I always thought it was going to be a tough match. In the first half, we had enough opportunities to score the first goal. We weren’t clinical enough at times.

“And then I thought there was a little bit of anxiousness crept into our game because we didn’t get that first goal. We make an error, they manage to then score. And strangely, I thought it sort of settled us down a little bit. And the fact that, ‘right, OK, that’s happened’, now we need to respond and react.

“I thought the lads had come on, I thought it helped us, I thought it had a good impact on the game. Tommy (Watson) does a great bit of footwork, I think Josh Coburn links it really well, finds him and then a great bit of footwork for the first one.

“We’re a bit unfortunate, the other one I think was about two centimetres that it doesn’t cross the line with. I think we all expected that to be a goal.

“So like I say, can we play better? Yeah, of course we can. But what I will say at this level, when you’ve got a team that sits in, they defend well, they’re steadfast. They’ve lost their last game 4-0, so the last thing they want to do is go and concede goals.”

Here’s how social media users reacted after Sheffield Wednesday v Millwall sees fans invade the pitch, trouble in the stands and outside the ground…

TodwickOwl: Did anyone witness that fight at 2.45 outside south entrance? Pretty sure it’s a Wednesdayite and Millwall fan and the Wednesday fan has had his ear bit off, blood everywhere – they were scrapping next to the barrier on the bridge and he nearly went over top. Shocking

OWL68: Yes the Wednesday fan lost the top of his ear ,I was walking past as it happened it was at the end of the bridge near the main entrance. The Owls fan lost the top of his ear . The Millwall fan was eventually picked up by the police .

Lammylad: Yes I witnessed it as I was walking over the bridge. I thought they were messing around at the time. The Wednesday fan had the Millwall fan in a headlock and had the opportunity to give him a beating, but he just patted him on his head. When he released his grip the Millwall fan grabbed his head and bit half his ear off. I followed him as he walked off behind the South Stand before he was eventually apprehended by a steward and eventually the police arrested him.

goodytheowl: seen someone saying it was done in front of his kids as well

TodwickOwl: It was and his wife, think he got led into South entrance – Police were there in a minute or so and went legging it

Standidno: Was a mate of mine. He’s ok but having stitches to sew it back up. He definitely hasnt lost his ear

OWL68: No when I said lost his ear it was a bit exaggerated. I was just walking past as the two lads were tussling holding onto to one another , when they released one of the lads turned round maybe two yards from me and the top inch of us ear was bitten into and hanging down, looked like it needed a fair bit of stitching, this was at the bottom of the steps to reception .The Suited man on reception steps was a bit clueless, the lad tried to walk off but a couple of stewards came by could only do so much but apprehended him at the bottom of steps behind south stand. I stayed close as I didn’t want lad to scarper . I tried to take a photo but the lad knocked my mobile onto the floor , by the time i picked mobile up two copper had come running over so I just sent into ground, glad your mates ok and had his ear stitched up 😉 UTO

Maidstone Owl: Other folk are saying his ear was on still, not lost or completely fallen off. Yes it is bad, but thankfully the pair of them both walked away and nobody punched each other/hit their head on the floor etc. It’s disgusting behaviour, and why on earth he had the Millwall fan in a head lock and tapping his head is also odd. Folk should stop aggravating each other and fighting in front of their families, FFS, it was a meaningless, crap football match.
