Derby County issue a statement after an incident in the city centre on Saturday night, with people injured and an arrest made.

A large police cordon was in place the morning after with police continuing with their investigations, with a man arrested after a car ploughed into pedestrians.

They have said the male, in his 30s and originally from India, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and also causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and dangerous driving.

Seven people were seriously hurt in the incident which happened about 9:30pm on Saturday on Friar Gate in Derby city centre when a black Suzuki Swift drove into people on the street.

DERBYSHIRE POLICE STATEMENT:

A man has been arrested after multiple pedestrians were struck by a car in Derby city centre.

The incident involved a black Suzuki Swift and happened in Friar Gate at about 9.30pm today.

A number of people were injured, some of them seriously, and were treated at the scene by ambulance crews before being taken to hospital.

Police officers stopped a vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident shortly after it happened. The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested and is in police custody.

Our investigation is in its early stages but we want to hear from anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift being driven in Derby around the time of the incident.

Friar Gate is completely closed from the junction with Curzon Street/Cheapside up to Ford Street. The road will be closed for a considerable time so please avoid the area completely.

Although we know this will be alarming, we would like to reassure people that we do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public.

UPDATE:

We can confirm that seven people were injured when a car was driven into pedestrians in a city centre street.

The car, a black Suzuki Swift, struck a number of people in Friar Gate at about 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March.

Seven people were treated at the scene by ambulance crews and taken to Royal Derby Hospital and Queenโ€™s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

The seven suffered a range of serious but not life-threatening injuries and we can confirm that contrary to online speculation, no one died in the incident.

A man in his 30s, who is originally from India, was found a short time after the incident.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving.

He remains in police custody.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing and we are keeping an open mind as to the motives.

#FriarGate | Drivers whose vehicles are parked within the cordon in Derby city centre will not be able to retrieve them until further notice.

Friar Gate and some surrounding streets are closed while an investigation into the circumstances of last night’s incident continues.

Vehicles will not be accessible until the scene has been lifted and the road has reopened, unless we are able to advise otherwise.
