Sheff Wed 0-3 Sheff Utd: Wilder condemns ‘vile’ chant, fans on the wind up, troubling scenes

After Sheff Wed 0-3 Sheff Utd, Chris Wilder condemns a ‘vile’ chant, with fans on the wind up and some troubling scenes on matchday.

Tyrese Campbell found the net twice (first assisted by Callum O’Hare after a high press, second after Sydie Peck’s interception), and then Tom Cannon came off the bench to make seal it with a deflected 20-yard strike.

Despite the victory, which is only their fourth of the season, Wilder’s side remain in the Championship relegation zone, now just one point from safety.

Administration-hit Owls, who were docked 12 points, are now on -4 points, stay rooted to the bottom, 18 points from safety.

There was heated scenes before, during and after the game, in the city, in the stands, outside of the ground. As seen in the video, police and stewards took action in the chaos that ensued.

Wilder spoke on abuse aimed at him, his daughter, and family – with one about having a party when he dies. Objects were also thrown on to the pitch at Sheffield United players.

Wilder said: “I think there’ll always be the Chris Wilder bit [with fans] and there were a couple of naughty chants, by the way, which is absolutely ridiculous. Yeah, it went across the line – but there you go. But that’s part and parcel of it.

“I think the feel around the city was that this could be the opportunity [for Wednesday] – and maybe people in the stadium didn’t realise how good we can be.

“And we had to prove all those things, all those attributes that you need to prove to win a game of football.

“I think the football people will walk away and go ‘they’re a decent side them and if they can put it together, they’ll start climbing the table’. But opinions and views are opinions and views. We’ve got to go and do the business and go and make that happen.”

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder told Sky Sports:

“We got the result we wanted. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but we’re showing good signs.

“Another clean sheet, which is great for us. The errors we’ve made this season, we’ve been punished severely for them.

“We were clinical, could have been even more clinical. The goals were really pleasing. We’ve got quality and we’ve got quality coming back – Hamer, Arblaster, Chong, Davies.

“We feel we can recover it, we’re not happy with the results we’ve picked up.

“It’s a good group to work with, but most of all I’m delighted for the supporters. It’s been a tough few months with losing at Wembley and not going up with 92 points.”

He told Sky Sports: “I spoke to Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan after the game. I think they’ve been an incredible credit to their football club.

“Those two have been the heartbeat. They’re in a difficult situation but they still ran us hard.

“For Henrik (Pedersen) and those two guys, an awful lot of credit should go to them.”

“We have to decide the direction of our journey,” Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield.

“If we take a step back then we are going to get hurt but if we are on-it and we use the work that we have done… it’s a good group.

“I think it was game-on for us today. Maybe some people didn’t realise how good we could be and we had to prove that.

“I think the football people will walk away saying we’re a decent side and that if we can put it together we’ll start climbing the table.

“Opinions and views are opinions and views – we’ve got to go and do the business and make it happen.”

Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen:

“We are all disappointed. It was not the performance we hoped for today. We got a good beginning and then we conceded a transition goal. Afterwards, we struggled a little bit with the belief, with the trust to have the ball, to move the ball quick enough.

“In the second half, after five minutes we conceded. We struggled to find the last pass, to have the last crossing, the last movement. We lost to a better team today.”

Pedersen told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“It was not the performance we hoped to give all the fantastic fans in Hillsborough today – we lost to a better team.

“We struggled a bit with belief to move the ball quickly enough, and I think from the defensive perspective we were not as dominant as we often are with our pressing.

“We had the ball I think 64% in the second half, but we had it from our own goal to the last 20 metres of the opponents’ half and we struggled to find the last pass.

“How do we break the defensive line of the opponent? It’s a theme of the season – the purpose of having the ball is to create chances, but I promise we’ll work a lot on this to be better.”

Player of the match Tyrese Campbell, for his two goals, tells Sky Sports:

“The gaffer summed it up as he said he does not need to motivate us for this one. The boys were up for it, everyone was sharp, focused.

“Training has been good during the international break, we worked hard and we got our rewards today.

(On whether this result can ignite the season): “Definitely. We don’t want to be fighting at the bottom, we want to be at the top. Hopefully we can go on from here and win some more points.”

Sheffield United’s Tom Cannon speaking with Sky Sports:

“It meant a lot. It’s been hard coming to a new team in January. It’s took time to come in and settle. I’ve had a few set backs with injuries. To get that goal means the world.

“We know how much it means to the fans. To score in this game is surreal.

“I always back myself regardless of the situation. I have full self belief. I don’t listen to any negativity. Stay tunnel visioned.”

Social media users gave their reaction after Sheff Wed 0-3 Sheff Utd, as Wilder condemns the ‘vile’ chant he heard, fans on the wind up, and troubling scenes…

@wardyblade1975: All season the thing that pissed me off the most was how spineless we’ve been, but today everyone of them put a shift in, a proper performance 💪🏻 UP THE FUCKING BLADES ⚔️

@Rant_75: The Met Office have just issued a red critical weather warning to alert people in Sheffield that there is a high chance of dangerous weather & flooding as per 2007 if all owls fans DO NOT STOP FECKIN CRYING anytime soon! Sand bag your doors people! 🤪

@SufcLee: delighted & relieved at the derby win as we knew that couldve been a banana skin, espically with some of recent performances. credit goes to players who turn up today. as losing to “worst Wednesday team in there history” wouldve haunted us for decades #twitterblades

@KerrieRoebuck: Can’t believe how easy that was. I thought it would be a tight game 😆. That awful Ref didn’t have the final say today. Well done Blades.

@therealtbailey: Spineless. We turned up. You didn’t. We never expected to win, but we did expect some heart and effort. #swfc

@HPSWFCFKCCC: Very easy to throw buzzwords about like “spineless” and so on but at the end of the day this squad of players is simply nowhere near good enough and its all down to one man, total mismatch today, obviously they’ll act like they’ve beat Madrid but we never stood a prayer today #swfc

@JackWalters92:
– strangled the life out of them.
– dominated both boxes.
– looked comfortable in possession.
– where’s that been all season?
– Bamford looks a quality addition.
– Ben Mee and JT top class.
– Someone can wake Cooper up now.

@stevesks: After watching Wednesday since 1966….that today was i e of the worst performances I’ve ever seen from the Owls. FFS it was a Steel City Derby and the only player to put a shift in today was Harry Ammass who’s wages are paid by Man Utd. Really broke my heart 2day. 🤷‍♂️

@goonie2008: That performance was unforgivable. Don’t deserve the support. Iorfa should not put that shirt on again, his regular back injury resurfaces every time he’s in for a rough ride. Shocking.

@dicko19814eva: Approached the game to defend. That’s not what a derby should be about. 1 shot at goal and zero shots on target is a disgrace at any level. Worst performance of a very bad season. Still only one man to blame, thank god he’s gone. Major rebuild with new the new owners needed.

@johnellison: I said this season I would not criticise any Wednesday player, we all know what has caused this situation, and it’s all down to one man. But today hurt, not because it’s them, but because we didn’t try, that’s unacceptable, sorry guys.

@woodc72: Not a single shot on target in a game like this, I’d sooner play with 10 men than play Ugbo, he’s a disgraceful excuse for a footballer, fans cheered when he won a header after 65 minutes. #swfc
