Seven fans have been arrested after Tuesday night’s Liverpool v Rangers Champions League match which saw the hosts win 2-0.
Merseyside police confirmed that a number of football fans have been arrested, mainly for affray and being drunk and disorderly. All of those who have been arrested remain in custody.
Supporters also clashed with police outside Anfield ahead of the game. The majority behaved and made for a great atmosphere.
Ultras group Union Bears marched to the stadium ahead of kick-off, singing songs in support of Rangers and lighting off pyrotechnics.
As the teams emerged from the tunnel following a rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone from the home end, Rangers fans showed they were not to be silenced, lighting up the away end unleashing a number of pyrotechnics.
A spokesperson for Merseyside police told the ECHO: “Seven Rangers fans arrested mainly for affray and being drunk and disorderly. All are still in custody.”

Yesterday ahead of the match it was also reported that Liverpool FC murals were vandalised and damaged in Anfield.
The offensive graffiti and damage to murals were reported at around 9am on Tuesday, October 2nd. One of the incidents includes blue paint being splattered on a Jurgen Klopp mural on Randolph Street. Pictures also emerged online showing fans handled by officers.
Murals of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson, also completed by MurWalls, have also been damaged as Merseyside police confirm an investigation has been launched and officers are working with Liverpool FC officials to check CCTV and identify possible suspects.
A spokesperson for Merseyside police said: “We can confirm we are investigating offensive graffiti in Anfield and three murals that were damaged in the area. The report of the offensive graffiti was received at around 9am today, Tuesday 4 October on Randolph Street prior to the Liverpool v Rangers FC game this evening.
“Merseyside Police will not tolerate any form of offensive graffiti or vandalism and is working to identify and bring to justice anyone found responsible for committing these crimes. Officers are liaising with Liverpool Football club to obtain CCTV footage and identify any possible suspects.”

Merseyside Police had a plan in place in an attempt to make sure that the game went ahead without any unwanted issues ahead of the first ever meeting between the two clubs.
Speaking on Monday, Superintendent Dawn McNally, silver commander for the Rangers game, told the Liverpool Echo: ‘We have been working closely with Liverpool and Rangers football clubs and supporters’ groups ahead of tomorrow night’s match at Anfield.
‘Merseyside Police has a history of successfully supporting large sporting events and a comprehensive policing plan is in place to ensure the match goes ahead smoothly and everyone attending has a safe and enjoyable time.
‘The history between Liverpool and Rangers supporters is good but as with any high-profile European football match, we will ensure there is an adequate number of officers in and around the city centre to monitor and engage with fans from both sides to ensure their safe passage to Anfield.
‘Merseyside Police has also linked in with partners including Liverpool Football Club and Liverpool City Council to ensure the event passes smoothly and that there is minimum disruption and congestion to roads and pedestrians as well as local businesses.’

This is what social media users said with seven fans arrested after the Liverpool v Rangers Champions League match…
@SCFRSC: For Rangers fans to mock the Hillsborough disaster when we’ve had 2 serious incidents of our own is disgraceful. All for likes and attention. Grow up
@55blueballoons: Unfollowed and blocked a few rangers fans today becauae of this, some disgusting stuff going about.
@paddyhoey: Rangers fans writing songs about Hillsborough might want to think about the tragic history of their own club and their own fans who didn’t come back from a game
@ian_rfc_72: Wee guys just want to be edgy these days. A couple generations behind those who were affected by the disaster and it shows. Ibrox disaster was well before my time as well, but if you’ve ever heard of an older fan speak of it or watched the programs about it, then you’d not be behind these jokes surely. Strange stuff.
@Jimmypettigrew1: This is not what we do get a grip!! Look what we’ve been through over the years & hate when we get mocked disgusting behaviour!!
@alimacno: Totally unacceptable 😡😡
@billy1872scot: The policing and entry into Anfield last night was back to the 80’s. They could have easily seriously hurt, fans, police and stewards it was a disgrace to be honest. @RangersFCSLO. To not have ticket checks hundreds of yards back was just fkn stupid. Rangers vs Liverpool
@rosscurrie971: What’s ironic is that those mocking Hillsborough have called out folk who mocked the Ibrox Disaster.
@DumGallTrueBlue: Disgusting treatment of the away support outside Anfield tonight @LFC Of all teams, you should know better. Poorest I’ve ever experienced.
@briit_hallxo: my pal got tripped by a steward and has broken his hand/wrist but obvs he’s refusing to go get it checked till the end of the game. horrible.
@Souness56onward: @MerseyPolice any comments on your uniformed officer pulling a taser on Rangers fans entering Anfield yesterday? Zero threat from us. His body cam will show that
@MoonbeamsLittle: Put in a claim to UEFA for PTSD, seems to work for them
@rfc_abbie: Worst I’ve experienced. The police and stewards only let me through their barricade because I was a woman. Otherwise I’d have been left to be squashed like everyone else. Shocker.
@PottsMalc: And the police will not have seen a thing. Welcome to our world 🌎
