York City boss Scott Lindsey explains having to substitute Ollie Pearce after just 44 seconds in their EFL Trophy game against Newcastle U21s.

It’s something we’ve seen not just in this competition but also in the National League Cup, something which continues to leave many fans confused, but when explained, makes sense. But Scott has called for the EFL to look at it and potentially change.

The EFL Trophy laws state – ‘Full Available Strength’ means the EFL Club must include at least four Qualifying Players in the ten outfield Players named in the starting eleven on the Team Sheet.

The competition handbook says a qualifying player means any player who had started the immediately preceding First Team Fixture (as defined below);

– subsequently starts the immediately following First Team Fixture

– is in the list of ten Players at the Club with the highest number of starting appearances in First Team Fixtures in the same Season

– has made forty or more starting appearances in First Team Fixtures or international equivalents (and not limited to the same Club or Season)

– or is on standard loan from a Premier League Club or any EFL Club operating a Category One Academy.

Interviewer: “Ollie Pearce, we know why, isn’t it ridiculous?”

Scott: “Yeah massively, massively ridiculous. You know listen Ollie’s trained today, we had a group training today, the boys who have been playing in the first team trained against the youth team today and done a really good session and then he had to come tonight and do that.

“It’s ridiculous. We had to do it because we have to tick all the boxes for the rules.

“But it’s madness, really is. It’s just… and I think it’s actually stopping younger players for clubs like ourselves in actual playing, do you know what mean?

“It’s like Ben Farrar starting on the bench, like he should be starting that game.

“I think they try and support Premier League clubs rather than clubs at our level. They want Premier League clubs to play against seasoned pros, which is fine and fair, but then it doesn’t help our homegrown talent. I think they need to look the rules for this competition definitely.”

Interviewer: “So I imagine they’ll have to be something similar next week or someone different next week?”

Scott: “Well the reason I picked Ollie Pearce is because he lives in York. I’m not even joking because I made it kind of open to the lads who train this morning you don’t have to come tonight because you’ve trained it’s a long day for you to then train and then come to the game so I didn’t make it where they had to come. I think they all did come because I think they thought I was testing them out.

“But yeah, we picked Piers because he lives in York because I didn’t want anybody traveling from Sheffield or wherever they live, you know, and, you know, coming on the pitch and playing for 30 seconds. was a waste of time. So that was the reason.”

Interviewer: “I joked he must be furious because you’ve racked his goals to game ratio a little bit.”

Scott: “Yeah, I said to him after the best he’s played, so a bit of banter about that. But no, listen, he’s just, yeah, it was a ridiculous rule. And he said to me, if I get a penalty in first 30 seconds, can I take it? I went, no, the board will be coming up.

“So yeah, yeah it’s a mad rule, but we had to do it and I explained it to Robbie, their manager, and said I’m not trying to disrupt anything, we’re going to do that and he was like yeah absolutely fine. I told the referee as well before the game so everyone was fine with it.”
