Sean Dyche demands for changes to VAR as he’s left frustrated at the red card shown to Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Thursday night’s FA Cup clash.
Dyche said that the use of the video assistant referee pitchside monitor is now testing his patience after striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was dismissed at Crystal Palace for the first time in his career.
The 26 year old walked off the pitch baffled at the decision in what played out to be a goalless draw at Selhurst Park.
Footage shows that he had his studs up in a challenge with Nathaniel Clyne, clipping the Palace defender’s shin with minimal contact.

Journalist Henry Winter tweeted: “#EFC surely appeal Calvert-Lewin’s red. He neither endangered opponent nor used excessive force. Webb @FA_PGMOL has to restore confidence of on-field refs to back themselves, deliver some consistency as worse challenges get only yellow and invest even more in improving standards.”
Writer Phil McNulty wrote: “Easy to see why so many football fans are done with the way VAR is being operated here after farcical Calvert-Lewin red card. No foul given. Barely an appeal. Referee not refereeing the game any more. When was the last time an official went to the screen & stuck with a decision?”
Jeff Stelling tweeted: “Seriously a red card for Calvert Lewin ?? Does anybody honestly believe the game is better for VAR? Makes you weep how the governing bodies/PGMOL are destroying our beloved game.”
Sean Dyche said in his post-match press conference: “The slow motion shows a different picture.
“If you want to slow-mo everything, you have to slow-mo everything. There’s minor contact and in live time he [referee Chris Kavanagh] doesn’t give anything, then they slow it down and everything looks worse.
“I have no clue what that [monitor] is there for. Every fan must be going ‘what is the point?’ We all know the outcome, they are going to agree with everything they’re being told.
“The chance of having something turned over is miniscule so why even bother?
“I’m a fan [of VAR] but we’re all aware it needs tidying up. I thought it was getting tidied up but it seems to have stepped back a little bit. I remain a fan, but it is beginning to test my patience.”
Kavanagh initially didn’t take action but reviewed the incident on the monitor following an intervention from VAR Michael Salisbury before giving Calvert-Lewin marching orders in the 79th minute.
“It is beginning to test my patience” 😬

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) defines serious foul play as: “A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play. Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.”
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson said: “I don’t know if I can understand those things these days. I don’t know what to make of it. It depends how far you want to go back in the past, there will be lots of people who played in the past who will say ‘No, that’s not a red card’, but then people playing recently will possibly say it’s a red card because of the way the studs were up and he was leading with a straight leg.
“It’s unfortunate for Calvert-Lewin, it wasn’t a vicious foul by any stretch of the imagination, but I thought the referee actually refereed the game quite well, there were a lot of decisions to make, a lot of challenges, it was physical. I think he handled that fairly well. If the decision is a red card, so be it I suppose, but I’m not prepared to come out and say it definitely was or definitely wasn’t. I think it’s a modern day situation.”

Everton captain Seamus Coleman agreed with Dyche and, said on ITV: “When you slow it down it is obviously going to look bad. From where I was it was a good tackle.
“As soon as the ref goes over there [to the screen] you know he’s going to give a red card. For me that’s not a red card and is another decision that goes against us.”
Leicester City’s Conor Coady, on BBC Radio 5 Live, felt the officials had made the wrong decision.
“Being a player, a current player, it is not a red card for me,” said the former Everton defender.
“I can understand people saying his foot is high and studs are showing, but they’re giving red cards for anything nowadays.
“I would be gutted if myself or one of my team-mates were sent off for that.
“Referees need to be stronger. It is as though when you are sent over to the screen you have to change your decision. Why not stick to the initial decision you made?”
Ex-Crystal Palace player Jobi McAnuff, said on ITV: “It wasn’t even a foul, let alone a red card. There’s nothing in that for me.
“You can slow something down and it looks a lot worse. The contact is minimal. It’s like VAR are trying to find ways to issue a red card or disallow a goal.
“The referee has made his decision on the pitch and someone sitting in a sanitised room somewhere has decided it’s worse than it was.”
“That’s the worst red card I’ve ever seen!” 😡
“It’s an absolute disgrace. When they took 2-3 minutes to review it.. what’re they looking at?!”

This is how fans reacted as Sean Dyche demands for changes to VAR as he’s left frustrated at the red card given to Calvert-Lewin…
@IanLimb3: I’m waiting for the day when the ref goes over to the monitor and disagrees with the VAR officials and stands by his on field decision. At least then the outcome won’t be so inevitable in the future
@airz1879: From what I can see there are two types of VAR the one that was used in Russia for the World Cup which everyone seemed to agree worked well and the second that is used in English football which nobody thinks works 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
@BBlackmore: Chris Kavanagh making another ridiculous decision after his mate has told him to look at it. How many more games is this utter tool going to ruin? No doubt he’ll be on front and stage of a big premier league game next weekend making more howlers. Officiating a joke 🤡
@matt_lloyd_: What exactly was the reason for the red card? It doesn’t “endanger safety”, and certainly wasn’t “excessive force” Not showing your studs isn’t a rule.
@rogerefc: Final one on this nonsense. How can anyone at the @FA_PGMOL let alone Webb explain what a supposed elite official is thinking here as he watches the monitor and deems THAT worthy of a red card? Please enlighten me because the fella shouldn’t be anywhere near a football field!
@GaryAmis: Need get rid of var once and for all never a red card for Everton and slow motion replays make tackles look worse the games not played slowly so should show incidents at full speed or forget var kills the game
@Sukki1975: I think we can all sympathise with Dyche and applaud his choice of words #NUFC
@lukecfc5: Make it a challenge system, only then you’ll get consistency as referees won’t have the VaR fallback option and if players think there’s been a mistake, they can challenge it. It’s the constant searching for errors that’s contributing to these VAR headlines every week
@Stoners8ball: Simplest solution to this is this. VAR stays for offsides, ball over the goal line or not and penalties whether inside ir outside box. That’s it. Each team then has 1 challenge per half that they can use where and when they want. This eliminates VAR refereeing every decision
@park_footballer: I like that. I’d say that we also need to get rid of the hairline offside decisions too though. If VAR are trying to split a pixel with their lines, it’s not a clear and obvious offside error, the onfield decision should stand.
@AFC_TayTay: @FA_PGMOL Sean Dyche has hit the nail on the head, why oh why do refs even go to the screen 😂? It’s such a waste of time, never once has a ref disagreed with the VAR so why don’t the VAR just tell the ref what’s happened and they go with the VAR decision, it’s so pointless 😂
@Cur1Dan: Worst thing about that decision is that Kavanagh was about 8 foot from the challenge and see it clearly and thought it wasn’t a foul, so why did he change his mind? Shocking decision. Everything looks bad in slow motion
@SpankTheBookies: Ruining the game.
@A9Mac: Defenders defend with their arms behind their back. Players don’t celebrate goals because their waiting to see if a toenail is offside. Red cards are being branded because of watching slow motion replays. VAR doing a great job improving the game.
@Scotty_mc10: Might aswell stop any physical contact then
@alexcraddock08:
Support Non-League…
– Beer with your mates on the terrace
– Support a local community
– Proper football
– No VAR
It’s just better than top level, games gone, it’s finished. They’re trying to make an imperfect sport perfect, and it’s killed it.
@BenidormToffee: It’s almost as though there’s a witch hunt against at this point. Every single game now.
@welshy1000: Worst officiating in the world in this country. It’s abysmal.
@cathan_jm: massive problem here is that the referee himself didnt give it because its not even a foul but some clown watching 50miles away whos never played the game sees a pair of studs and calls it a red which then the ref and at that point the ref isnt gonna overule him. its pathetic
@dorsetdom1905: Not in a million years is that a red. Awful decision. Even in slow motion (which shouldn’t be an option for a ref to see – should be real time only) it’s not a red. Games gone
@Toddoldboy: You have officially ruined the game @FA_PGMOL
@CFCAway_: Genuinely if that’s a red card we might as well go to non contact. The game has become a complete farce. So so soft is a joke.
@Buckinghamball: Why is VAR even in use? It won’t be in use at Coventry v Oxford this weekend in the same round in the same competition. #oufc #pusb #efc #cpfc #facup
@Pete_Js: At this point, you’ve got to wonder when Howard Webb will receive his marching orders. The standards of refereeing has drastically declined. They are having to freeze frame or ultra slow mo tackles to TRY to find an excuse to send players off. @FA_PGMOL are a joke
@AndyK7972: That’s bollocks. There’s no malice there at all. This is another reason why I can’t watch football any longer. I used to enjoy watching football, now it’s just a farce. All the greats who are sadly no longer with us must be spinning in their graves…..
@louorns: You cannot tell me Premier League referees have a difficult job. It’s one of the easiest jobs you’ll ever see, paid decent money, they even get to look at things 5/6 times over and they still manage to get things so badly wrong. They’re not corrupt, they’re just fucking useless
@nsno_83: Absolutely mental. Ref doesn’t even give a foul, then goes and watches about 15 replays before finally going ‘yeah it’s a red that actually’. Footy is on its arse.
@Steeley_BFC: I think every single football fan at the moment is losing a bit of love for the game
