Referee sorry for allowing Stoke goal to stand | Stockport boss wants official banned

A referee has said he is sorry for allowing the opening Stoke goal to stand while the boss of Stockport wants a different official banned.

Yes it seems to be another week where managers and fans have hit out at the standard of refereeing, putting more pressure on the FA and EFL to get it sorted.

Referee Michael Salisbury apologised for allowing Stoke’s opening goal to stand in the 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening.

The apology was received by Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder, who revealed the gesture from the referee took place at half time, when the score was 1-1.

Jacob Brown had opened the scoring for the Potters, then Duncan Watmore got the equaliser late in the half.

Speaking after the match, Wilder told TeessideLive: “I believed he was fouled, our analyst upstairs said he thought he was too. The referee apologised at half time. I don’t know where that’s come from, or if someone has got in his ear and said that he got it wrong. But that’s pretty honest of him to do that.

“It’s disappointing from that point of view because they’ve taken that chance. But from thereon in, I think Zack (Steffen) made a save first half, but second half it was just all us. We passed well, we pressed well, there was a great structure to the team. We dominated every part of the game.”

Boro had gone 2-1 up in the second half, with D’Margio Wright-Phillips equalising in stoppage time to bring the game back level. Wilder admitted his team were at fault for that one.

“We ultimately make the mistake,” he said. “Paddy (McNair) should clear the lines or have a better touch when it comes it him on the edge. You give credit that the boy finds a great pass and it’s a good header.

“From our point of view we can maybe pick the bones out of the defending. Maybe Izzy [Isaiah Jones] has to come round a little bit more on it. But ultimately they find the one bit of quality that gets them something out of the game.”

Meanwhile, match referee Declan Bourne missed an off-the-ball incident between Doncaster Rovers’ Tommy Rowe and Stockport’s Macauley Southam-Hales, which resulted in the former being struck in the face by his opponent.

However his assistant caught what happened and the Stockport defender was subsequently red-carded just 21 minutes into the match.

“It was never a red card based on what the linesman’s said he’s seen,” claimed Challinor, whose side fell to a third defeat in their opening four League Two games.

“He said he’s seen Macca elbow the lad in the face when the lad’s not got hold of him.

“That’s a huge call to make 20 minutes into a game that results in a decision that ultimately takes away a really good chance of us winning a game of football.”

Doncaster made the most of the one-man advantage count in injury time when Kieran Agard scored the winning goal after County’s Ryan Rydel cancelled out George Miller’s opener.

Challinor added: “It’s really easy for them to say ‘move on, we’ve made a mistake’. There needs to be a consequence to it.

“He shouldn’t have a game for a while. If based on what he’s seen is right, our player misses three games.

“He should miss three games for that. What he’s seen is not right. They (officials) need to be culpable for the decisions they make.”

This also come days after Nigel Pearson threatens to quit football due to officials while Bristol City and Luton players take to having a ‘scrap’ mid-game.

The Robins manager said that he was considered retiring because be believes the standard of refereeing is so low it’s compromising the integrity of the sport and putting manager’s under unnecessary and unfair pressure.

This is despite his side beating Luton 2-0 at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night, however were forced to play the final 23 minutes with 10 men after referee Leigh Doughty sent Mark Sykes off for a rash challenge on midfielder Luke Freeman.

Pearson had no complaints over the decision to give marching orders to Sykes but felt Freeman should’ve followed after he got to his feet and barged into the back of the Irish midfielder with his chest, forcing him to the ground.

Freeman got off with just a yellow but that incident came just minutes after Rob Atkinson was denied a spot kick after dribbling into the penalty area and catching the leg of a Luton defender.

It’s the third game this season where Nigel Pearson has hit out at refereeing and raised questionable decisions after games against Hull City and Wigan.

He revealed the PGMOL wrote to the club on Saturday to tell them the Tigers penalty shouldn’t have been given and the Robins were unfairly denied two spot-kicks of their own.

“In the modern game, I’ve got no complaints about Sykesy but what I do have a complaint about is the way their player wasn’t dealt with in the same way,” Pearson told Sky Sports News. “I’ve got to be honest with you, I thought about it last year, and I’ve thought about it again this year and that is basically to pack up being involved in the sport.

“And that is not because how shallow the modern game is and how some of the aspects of the modern game irritate me but the standard of officiating, as far as I’m concerned, is at an all-time low.”

Pearson risks being issued another fine from the FA having been punished for his outspoken comments about referee Andy Davies in the wake of their defeat to QPR last December in which he branded the officials, “parks standard”.

He claims his pockets are “empty” because he keeps speaking his mind about the treatment of his side at the hands of the officials.

“After the first game at Hull, only this week, we had a reply from the authorities to say their first goal wasn’t a penalty and we should have had two,” Pearson added.

“Which is fair enough, at least they can be reasonable enough to give some sort of explanation but I’m afraid when it happens all the time, we’ve had it again today – Rob Atkinson was fouled and we didn’t get it – so as far as I’m concerned the integrity of the sport is being compromised.

“They’re consistently poor. I’ll probably get in trouble again for saying what I think but somebody has to say it – I’m sick to death about people like me who have jobs that are in jeopardy. It’s alright if we play badly every week, I can take losing my job because of that… but, for me, it’s just a worry for the game.”

Fans reacted as referee Michael Salisbury says sorry for allowing the opening Stoke goal to stand and the Stockport boss wants an official banned…

@Boro_Breakdown: Wilder said the ref apologised for getting the wrong call on this. Cool, can we have our three points now? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@AJTMFC: Seriously the level of refereeing in the championship is pathetic! How is this not a foul? Keep ya apology Michael Salisbury go for a eye test instead. Clown

@_mstephenson88: That’s even worse than I thought it was. How has he not given a foul there

@danielburns789: Officiating in this league as absurd and it cost what could easily of been 3 points. absolute joke

@boshcobar: how at this level of football the officiating is this bad i will never know, could well have been 3 points if he could actually have done his job correctly. still not over last night at all

@newton_danny: Cannot believe this wasn’t given as a foul 😂 @EFL you’re referees get worse with every passing game

@MikeyHobson3: No foul and it leads to a break away which causes their goal, the standard of officiating in this country has never been so rock bottom it’s fucking criminal

@poddy_8: Foul every day of the week, officiating in this league is absolute shite, lucky to get away with that as we were with the result. Maybe it’s evening out with some of the shocking decisions that went against us last season

@andrewstevo39: Officiating in the @EFL is absolutely shocking.

@8252Hazel: They need to be interviewed after games. It needs to happen now, they’re getting worse.

@guvpaul1: Inconsistently bad refs @SkyBetChamp

@yessam_mail: Right under the nose of the ref 🤮

@Andyroo1980: That’s an absolute shocker!

@VonRoginald: Best angle I’ve seen. Foul all day long.

@boroloony: Wow, an absolutely piss poor decision has cost us again

@RicNewsham: Ridiculous decision.

@StatthewMambach: Diabolical decision. How on earth can anyone state this was “an elbow to the head”. Liner couldn’t get his flag up quick enough for the winner in stoppage time either 🙄

@GrahamStreety: That’s not a red card. Poor decision. Ruins the night of the following. Cheated. Tommy Rowe has played the Linesman like an old fiddle. Don’t think MSH has reacted badly at all. That will be overturned.

@TidswellDaniel: Can’t believe Rowe had the cheek to applaud our fans at the end! Officials were awful. We were on top before the sending off I thought. Really battled second half.

@davesarge4: Softest red card I’ve ever seen

@markflatts: And we all thought the refs in the national league were a joke!

@disco_dave_lee: If that’s a red, then you’ll have about 6 or 7 per game

@andyboll1: Tommy Rowe milked that big time. Rowe was pulling MSH all over the show. Faked getting hit in the face.

@MyPascual28: That’s pathetic. 🤦🏼🤦🏼

@OliverBeaumont: How is that a red omg @EFL sort your refs out bunch of cunts
