‘Can’t believe I got sent for this’ – Grantham player red carded for tackle vs Long Eaton

‘Can’t believe I got sent for this’ – Those are the words from a Grantham player who was red carded for a tackle in the game vs Long Eaton.

Dan Cocks was just one of two players who was sent off in the game, while nine yellow cards were also dished out during the Northern Premier League East Division fixture.

It was his sending off however that got many debating on social media, uploading the clip online and quickly got over 100,000 views. He wrote: “Can’t believe I got sent for this. Or am I being biased??”

Grantham Town were held to a 1-1 draw, even reduced to nine men with 20 minutes remaining, the Gingerbreads dug deep to keep the hosts out and secure a point.

Referee Mr Clayton at times seemingly unable to get control of the two sides, and the most talked about moment saw fans and staff members shouting that the player, who was sent off, had got the ball.

“To play the majority of the game with 10 and more with nine, you’d expect to lose games of football,” said Grantham manager Matt Chatfield. “To be fair, first half we got it wrong and didn’t compete with a good Long Eaton side.

“The first sending off probably helped us, but you can’t coach what happened on the pitch from there on.

“Everyone should be proud of how hard they worked tonight.”

Clayton gave no leeway for the torrential rainfall, which made the pitch slippery as he booked two Grantham players in the opening five minutes – Jake Wright’s challenge, so early in a game that normally it would lead to a talking to, not a caution, and Jonathan Wafula who slipped as he challenged his opponent.

A player melée before Dan Cocks was red carded was partly due to frustration when Mr Clayton didn’t book Long Eaton’s Tom Marshall for a challenge similar to those early cards.

On the 29th minute, Alex Marshall had got between the Grantham centre halves and sent a powerful header past Haystead before Grantham got an equaliser three minutes later.

A quick break from a Long Eaton corner sent Nathan Tyson away, keeper Sam Wilson came off his line and Tyson was able to square the ball for Harry Wood, who held off two challenges and put the ball into the back of the net.

Another three minutes later, Grantham went down to 10 men just after Tom Marshall was spoken to by the referee for a tackle outside the penalty area that deserved a yellow card. A free kick was deflected away by a raised arm inside the penalty area with handball claims waved away by the referee, before Cocks chased down the loose ball and put it out of play. A 20-player melée ensued with Cocks being red carded for the challenge and Long Eaton skipper Jamie McGuire a yellow for his part in what happened.

In the 68th minute, Wright missed a long ball, was left behind by Jack Rogers, and then caught the Long Eaton winger before getting shown a second yellow card.

The home bench incurred the wrath of the ref as they repeated threw another ball on to the pitch as soon as the match ball went out of play, resulting in a yellow card handed out at the bench. The match highlights, an interesting one, can be seen below…

Fans reacted as the Grantham player gets red carded for a tackle vs Long Eaton…

@gallymufc: Looks like a great tackle to me pal

@samcufc79: Just watched it 4 times and can’t make my mind up. Got the ball but also took everything with it. Orange for me.

@PFord20142017: Great tackle just can’t do it unfortunately nowadays

@YouYeltz: Looks like a great tackle 👏

@BalmforthAndy: Games gone if that’s a red. Awful reffing.

@LeeShelley81: Got the ball pal 🤷🏼‍♂️ Must have looked/sounded worse live cos that’s some reaction to it 😂 front on yeh I could see a red card but just a hard tackle with ball and man taken 🤷🏼‍♂️

@BenCliff11: Great tackle that

@CoachLordy: Quality tackle. Not even a free kick! 🙌🙌

@greensmitb: Yes cocksy 👏👏. Fucking great tackle. Used to love you skipping past full backs as a kid. But not love you folding them in half 🤣

@mcossie24: Shocking that. That’s what gets me mad about football can’t tackle these days next be playing tag football. Full off fairy’s. Jumping off the bench like you have broke the lads legs 🙈🙈

@JackJonesRef: I think the pace in which you’ve gone into the tackle and because your right foot is off of the ground, the ref is right to award a red card. The quality of the clip isn’t amazing so I can’t tell if/where there’s contact, but the ref has good sight of it.

@RetroGTFC: I was 10 yards away & whilst it was strong the ball was definitely won but I can see the argument of leaving the ground. For me a yellow the sensible decision. I suspect it would have been that if across near the corner flag but the overreaction by the LE bench made it a red.

@shipton1975: No, good tackle, ref poor position, ball direct is key and liner only flagged after the whistle so didn’t give it before the ref. I sure if the ref had this angle of view it would b different. The opposition players reaction got u the red sadly. That’s football 4 u.. Shit happens

@Rduddy93: Mint tackle 👌

@msmcglau: Never a foul, let alone a red

@pwcassidy: Even I think that’s an alright tackle so that must say something 😂 he’s probably thought you gone in hard because of no handball given from the free kick? Not sure everyone in was needed for it like 🤌🏼
