QPR centre back Jimmy Dunne scores 92nd minute worldie to beat Birmingham in relegation 6-pointer

QPR centre back Jimmy Dunne scores a 92nd minute worldie to beat Birmingham City in a relegation 6-pointer on Saturday afternoon.

Jimmy Dunne’s stunning stoppage-time goal gave QPR a crucial 2-1 victory to come back from behind and beat fellow strugglers Birmingham which took them four points clear of the Championship relegation zone.

Dunne advanced towards the goal as he received goalkeeper Asmir Begovic’s lengthy kick. Following a challenge from Sinclair Armstrong on Deon Sanderson, the defender then managed to control the loose ball just outside the penalty area and with a remarkable left-footed volley, he sent the ball soaring into the top corner of the net.

This exceptional goal resulted in the defeat of the Blues in Gary Rowett’s first match since being appointment as interim boss.

QPR: Begovic, Dunne, Cook, Clarke-Salter, Paal (Larkeche 87′), Hayden (Colback 60′), Field, Willock (Smyth 76′), Andersen, Chair, Frey (Armstrong 60′)

Subs: Colback, Dykes, Smyth, Fox, Hodge, Cannon, Larkeche, Armstrong, Walsh

Birmingham: Ruddy, Aiwu, Sanderson, Buchanan, Laird, Paik Seung-Ho, Bielik (Gardner 91′), Drameh, Bacuna (James 85′), Stansfield (Hogan 84′), Tyler Roberts (Miyoshi 73′)

Subs: Etheridge, Hogan, Miyoshi, Anderson, Dembélé, James, Gardner, Sunjic, Hall

QPR boss Marti Cifuentes told BBC Radio London:

“What a game. I’m very glad for the supporters and the players because it was difficult, as we predicted.

“But especially because we got three clear chances in the first half and to go in 0-0 is not easy.

“If you miss chances then your opponent will punish you, that is the rule of football and that is what happened, so the courage to get the quick draw [equaliser] and then to keep going to win I think shows the massive mentality these guys have.”

On Jimmy Dunne’s winner:

“I’m so happy for him. He has worked very hard, he had a period where he didn’t play because we had a lot of good players and even then he was training and competing well, it was difficult to make a lot of changes to a team that was collecting points.

“Probably he had been dreaming before as a kid to score a goal like this and I’m very happy for him.”

Rowett took encouragement from Birmingham’s improved display, despite the result.

“It was a cruel way to end what has been a really positive and productive week in terms of the work we’ve done. I thought some of it came out in the game,” he said.

“Some of the (negative) things that have been happening also happened in the game, but you’re not going to change that instantly.”

Blues are now without a win in seven matches and remain above third-from-bottom Huddersfield only on goal difference.

“When you score that goal away from home you then need a period of the game where the opposition feel a bit more desperate,” Rowett added.

“But they scored pretty much straightaway. Then we lost the game in the way that we did.

“I won’t let that undo the positive things that happened in the game. I won’t let it affect the players.

“Results-wise I don’t think it massively changes the position we’re in, but it’s just one more opportunity we had to take something and I think we probably did deserve to take something.

“I knew this would be a challenging job. I didn’t expect to wave a magic wand and change everything in the first game.

“It’s one game down and we’ll take the positives from it and make sure we improve.”
