Paul Merson delivers ‘brutal’ Portsmouth message to two young Southampton fans

Paul Merson delivers a ‘brutal’ message about Portsmouth to two young Southampton fans after the Saints conceded to Middlesbrough late on.

Boro’s Emmanuel Latte Lath scored a 90th-minute equaliser to deny Southampton all three points in the Championship, while Portsmouth maintained their lead at the top of League One after a 3-1 win over Wycombe.

At St Mary’s, Adam Armstrong had seemingly fired Saints towards a 23rd victory of the season with his 30th goal contribution in the Championship this season – more than any other player.

But Ivorian Latte Lath nodded in his 10th goal of the campaign late on to extend Boro’s unbeaten run to five matches.

Over at Adams Park, Colby Bishop scored twice as the third tier leaders Portsmouth moved closer to promotion to the Championship with a stylish 3-1 victory at Wycombe.

Pompey are now 11 points clear of third-placed Bolton after extending their unbeaten run to 13 games and need three more victories to seal a return to the second tier after 12 years away.

Merse said when watching Middlesbrough made it 1-1 at Southampton: “Yeah, that looks like that’ll be it now. Looks like it’ll be playoffs for them, you know.

“And there’s a couple of little kids who went today. First ever game at Southampton. Young kids, there is time for you to go and support Portsmouth if you want to get that in. Didn’t he? Come on, Pompey.”

Southampton boss Russell Martin told BBC Radio Solent:

“We should have won, we should score after the chances and need to be ruthless in our box.

“I’m really annoyed with both the chances we missed and the goal we conceded, it was a rubbish one to concede.

“I’m really looking forward to the Ipswich game, we go toe to toe with anyone, it won’t change, the focus will be on us but we have to be more ruthless in both boxes.”

Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick told BBC Radio Tees:

“There was a lot of good football from both sides, it was a tough game.

“It was quite open in the second half, I was proud of the boys for how they did with the injuries we had.

“We were fantastic, we stuck together and showed quality. We could have maybe snatched it right at the end too.”

Wycombe (4-1-4-1): Ravizzoli; Grimmer (McCarthy 81), Lonwijk, Tafazolli, Leahy (Forino 75); Potts; Lubala, Scowen (c) (Taylor 64), Butcher, Sadlier (Vokes 75); Kone (Campbell 64)

Pompey boss John Mousinho said: “It feels amazing to be honest. To have the reaction to scoring the goal in front of the Fratton End; the whole stadium went up.

“I thought we thoroughly deserved the win. We obviously left it very late, and I only allowed myself a few seconds to celebrate because I knew I had to get Sean Raggett on straight away”

“I thought our chance had gone when Colby missed a chance at the far post.

“My emotions wouldn’t have been quite as happy if we hadn’t scored that late goal but I would have been as happy with the performance and how we went about things. Overall I’m pleased with tonight.

“We stood up to the physical test really well. Wycombe are really good at what they do. They have a Premier League centre forward and have plenty of Championship calibre behind it.

“We went a goal behind and it is difficult from there. Wycombe sat in and made it difficult. We stuck at it under difficult circumstances and were absolutely superb.”

Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield took issue with Shaughessy’s winner had come after a foul on his keeper Max Stryjek.

He said: “I am very angry and frustrated, and also sorry for the supporters who made the journey on a Tuesday night.

“It was a blatant foul on the goalkeeper for their second. Their player jumps into him and prevents him from catching the ball and flattens him.

“I was very proud of the lads tonight and thought we carried a threat even in the second half. We deserved something from the game.

“Decisions against us are becoming a regular occurrence.

“It is so disappointing that the lads work extremely hard and decisions like that cost us getting something out of the game. That’s the second game in a row we have been hard done by.

“We were really looking forward to this game, so disappointed to come away with nothing.

“We obviously have to pick ourselves up from this. We go to Fleetwood on Saturday, and we need to start getting points.”
