Pundits burst out laughing at Northampton mascot’s reaction to being pushed by Derby player

Pundits burst out laughing at the Northampton Town mascot’s reaction to being pushed by Derby player Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

Tim Sherwood watched on during Saturday’s Sky Sports Soccer Saturday as he witnessed a comical moment involving Clarence The Dragon during their League One fixture against Derby County.

The former Tottenham and Aston Villa manager chuckled as he watched the mascot playfully dive after being pushed by the Derby player.

It unfolded when Nathaniel Mendez-Laing attempted to retrieve the ball from the mascot after Derby won a corner kick.

Clarence The Dragon mischievously dropped the ball out of Mendez-Laing’s reach, prompting the player to give him a gentle shove, causing the mascot to humorously fall to the ground.

The humorous moment caused a wave of laughter in the Sky Sports studio, with presenter Julian Warren praising the mascot’s playful behaviour.

Warren said, “That is brilliant! Clarence The Dragon take a bow!” Northampton also emerged victorious on the field, securing a surprising win against Derby in the League One match.

Sam Hoskins got on the end of a cross sent in to finish first time in to the bottom corner on the volley for what was the only goal of the game.

Northampton Town:ย Moulden (GK), McGowan (C) (62′ Hondermarck), Sowerby, Sherring, Hoskins (90′ Bowie), Fox (90′ McWilliams, Appere (90′ Simpson), Pinnock, Monthe, Leonard, Moore (90′ Koiki).

Substitutes not used:ย Dadge (GK), Gape.

Derby County:ย Wildsmith (GK), Wilson, Hourihane (C), Bradley, Cashin, Waghorn (68′ Washington), Mendez-Laing (68′ Ward), Thompson (63′ Blackett-Taylor), Sibley (63′ Elder), Adams (63′ Smith), Nelson.

Substitutes not used:ย Loach (GK), Radcliffe.

Derby County Head Coach Paul Warne: “I didn’t think we were amazing, but still think we created enough chances to win. The goal we conceded was farcical, really. We congratulate Northampton for their win but the chance they took was harder than the chances we missed and, sometimes, games are determined on that. In the end, it just became one of those games. We put enough decent balls in and enough set-pieces, but we just didn’t take any. It’s a disappointing day because we got an injury to Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Sonny Bradley was been sent off. As bad days go, it’s right up there.

“I didn’t think we were great today but you have to always respect the opposition and they made it difficult for us. I still thought we had enough chances to win, we just didn’t take them. My disappointment is that we didn’t show enough character, really. It was a good opportunity to put a good marker down in this match and we haven’t taken it. On paper people may have seen this as an easier game, but it doesn’t work like that and we’ve now got back-to-back tough ones against Blackpool and Portsmouth which possibly suits us more.”

On Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s injury… “He took a challenge down near us and felt his hamstring. My honest opinion is that he’s pulled something because he’s been physically resilient for us and played a lot of time. We’ll know more early next week.”

On those not involved today… “Craig Forsyth injured another part of his calf in training so I don’t think we’ll see him again this season, unfortunately. Tom Barkhuizen is out for another 2-3 weeks and, similarly, Dwight Gayle is out for that period as well. We’ll have to look at the squad on Monday and build up to a big game on Friday.”

On Blackpool next Friday at Pride Park… “We’ve got six games left to pick up the points we need. Maybe it’s a wake up call for everyone today that we’ve not achieved anything yet. I just want the lads to realise if the pressure comes on like that again, and they are chasing a game, they’ve just got to breathe a little bit more. We’ll pick them up on Monday and look forward to the game at Pride Park.”

Northampton boss Jon Brady said: โ€œI am incredibly proud of this group.

โ€œI had to shuffle the pack with Jon Guthrie and Max Dyche being out and Jack Sowerby having to play centre half.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been through some tough moments but we are a close knit club and today was for our chief executive James Whiting.

โ€œWe had to make one or two blocks but we scored a magnificent goal, it was a world class finish from Sam and we also hit the post and should have had a penalty.

โ€œThe players commitment was fantastic and it was a really good performance.

โ€œTactically we set out to play the way we did and everyone, including the subs that came on were fantastic. The players really put a shift in and their work rate was incredible.

โ€œWe had ten players out today and to beat Derby is quite remarkable really.

โ€œWe will have a body count for Friday and weโ€™ve still got six games to go but lets enjoy today and this moment.โ€
