Professional footballer accused of touching himself in front of woman on train

A professional footballer has been accused of touching himself in front of a woman on a train in London, according to reports.

AFC Wimbledon defender Paul Kalambayi was spotted wearing the official club tracksuit when the incident happened.

However he is claiming that he was adjusting the volume of his headphones.

The player, now aged 21 but at the time of the incident was 18 years old, at across from one woman on the train, before moving to sit opposite the young woman in question.

He was on his way to the club’s training ground in Berrylands, which is based in south west London.

Kingston Crown Court heard how the train carriage was empty except for the defendant, alleged victim and two other passengers.

The young woman also gave evidence against the footballer, stating that he was watching her and then when she looked up she caught him playing with himself, something he denies doing.

“The way he was touching himself it was like a gesture to try and entice me to him.

“He was holding it and showing me like ‘look at my erect penis’.”

She said she was left “shocked” by his behaviour and “wanted to get away from him”, so decided to move away, standing next to the train doors, something that can be seen on CCTV footage.

“There were ample places he could have sat. He was looking around for somewhere to sit and he chose to sit directly in front of the woman who was on my train.

“I looked at her because he smelt quite badly of BO and it took me back a bit, so I imagine it took her back a bit as well.

“I looked over at her and she looked up at him in kind of like disgust, because he did smell bad. As the train was going he then got out his seat and went to the two seats behind him.

“The way he sat down was odd as well. He sat kind of slouched across both seats in my direction with his body towards me.

“I noticed he was fiddling around with his trousers and he was holding his erect penis. And I could see it was his penis because of where it was on his body and the shape of it.”

She added: “I was just shocked and disgusted really and it annoyed me a lot that he thought that was an appropriate thing to do to anyone.”

Kalambayi said he may have been “adjusting the volume on his headphones” from a button in his pocket or “fixing his boxers” and denies allegations that he was playing with his penis. He adds that he moved from the first seat for “more legroom”.

Asked by prosecutor Ollie Wellings if he had put his left hand on his groin during the train journey, Kalambayi said: “No, I’d say my pocket.”

In closing speeches yesterday, Kate Parker, defending the player, told jurors : “Imagine your commute, not your commute today perhaps in these times, but your commute two years ago.

“Pick a day, any day, that was routine and unremarkable. And imagine having to account in detail for your actions – more specifically your hand movements – on that commute two years later before 12 total strangers.

“No doubt your memory will have faded. You might be unclear on the details why you sat or stood somewhere or looked in a certain direction. Moving seats or looking at someone doesn’t require explanation.”

Seconds later in the footage, the Wimbledon player was seen getting up and walking in the opposite direction from her and into the next carriage.

The 21-year-old denies one count of outraging pubic decency after the incident in October 2018.

Kalambayi said: “[If I got into trouble] Most likely because I represent the club, I would lose my job and if that happens it would be hard to find another one.”

UPDATE

It was confirmed on Thursday afternoon that Paul Kalambayi has been cleared of wrong-doing. He has since walked free from court after a jury found him not guilty of outraging public decency.

After the foreman delivered the jury’s verdict, Kalambayi quickly walked away from the dock out of the courtroom.

It comes just 10 months after former footballer Neil Shipperley has been sentenced after he admitted to flashing and performing a sex act in front of a mum and her 16-year-old daughter.

Back in September, ex-Crystal Palace, Barnsley, Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Southampton and Sheffield United player exposed himself from a white van as they walked along a street.

Shipperley pleaded guilty to a charge of intentionally exposing his genitals intending that someone would see them and be caused alarm or distress.

He was ordered to complete 20-days of rehabilitation as part of the order given at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court.
