MK Dons’ Paul Warne was left confused by two ‘blatant’ penalty decisions not given in the 0-0 draw with AFC Wimbledon.

It was a tense contest between these two rivals, but neither could find the net, settling for a goalless draw, but it did come with some controversy.

The result sees Milton Keynes Dons 19th in the League One table, with 6 points from 7 games, but remain winless, while Wimbledon are 5th with 11 points from 7 games.

Ahead of the fixture, AFC Wimbledon co-founder Ivor Heller demanded for an apology from Mark Bullingham and ordered for MK to drop “Dons” from their name.

It got a little lively before the game outside Plough Lane, with rival fans taunting each other before police pushed them on their way, preventing those from clashing.

As the game got underway, fans noticed the scoreboard simply had ‘HOME’ and ‘AWAY’ as the teams, failing to name MK Dons, but also themselves, when normally, they would have the club crests displayed.

This follows after in 2018, the EFL ended up dropping charges after AFC Wimbledon refused to use MK Dons’ full name.

And mid-game, viewers spotted a funny moment where an AFC Wimbledon fell over the advertising hoarding when heading an oncoming ball back onto the pitch.

AFC Wimbledon fans were heard singing at the 970 MK Dons fans… “Where were you? Where were you? Where were you when you were us?”

Sky Sports and commentators apologised for any swearing heard from those in the stadium through the game.

MK Dons boss Paul Warne spoke, on referee Richard Eley not giving each side a spot kick, then further baffled by AFC Wimbledon’s Jayden Stockley escaping a red card for appearing to stamp and scrap with Alex Gilbey.

He said, as per MK Citizen: “I don’t see how he doesn’t think that’s a foul. I’m not bothered whether he thinks it’s a penalty or not, he just threw him on the floor. It looked a very blatant foul.

“And at the other end, it looked handball to me. But I don’t know what handball is anymore, it looked a bit chesty as well, and I don’t know what he’s supposed to do if he’s falling over. If it was at the other end, I’d have wanted it.

“Because the first one wasn’t given… I felt it was strangely reffed.”

Warne said, as per Sky Sports: “I really enjoyed it, I don’t know why. I built it up in my head like people would be trying to hit me with flamethrowers or darts or something and I was going to be coming out with my neck in bits. But everyone has been really nice, I found it weird to be honest.

“I was prepared. Everywhere I went I was tense and I was prepared to tell people to leave me alone but there was not any of that.

“Both sets of fans were loud, but those are the games you want to be in.

“My memory is horrific. I’m not making a joke about it, I can’t remember many games, but I will remember this one and hopefully later on I will remember the home game and I will remember it because we won.

“It was how football should be, it was loud, it was a bit aggressive, and two sets of committed players.”

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson said: “Pride [is my overriding emotion], to be honest. I think this game always brings out the best of us at this football club. I think that was on show again tonight. On the pitch, in the stands.

“I am a bit gutted we did not win it but I am pleased we did not lose it. So yeah, a bit of a mixed bag to be honest but I could not ask any more of the boys.

“I am super proud of them. They caused us some problems for the first 20 minutes of the second half.

“I think we made some adjustments on the pitch and the lads got to grips with it.

“I think we grew back into the half, we needed to get a little bit more control with the ball, which we started to do and then we had threats on the counter-attack.

“I felt like by the end of the game, if someone was going to win it it was going to be us, but you are only a moment away from a set-piece or a long throw and I was really happy with how we stood up to that.”
