AFC Wimbledon leave it late for their first league win and make it three league losses for Wigan in League One on Sunday afternoon.

Myles Hippolyte coolly slotted home on 88 minutes to leave the Latics frustrating at not being able to score from the chances they had at goal.

The game also saw open goal misses, penalty appeals turned away, the woodwork struck and some impressive saves… but this moment though, Sonny Perkins some how unable to score an open goal, from three yards out.

Speaking to Latics TV after defeat, Caldwell said:

“I don’t know how we’ve lost it, to be perfectly honest. But, yes, we have to get better in certain actions. It’s clear we created so many good moments, so many chances, no goals again.

“You cannot come out and play like that and not win. That’s three games; I’ll include the Barnsley game, so four, where I think we should have won every game and we’ve not, so we have to look at that.

“We will get better, because there are so many good things that I’m seeing from a group that is newly formed and needs time to really build and come together to win games consistently.

“Whilst you don’t score, you definitely don’t concede. The old saying goes, if you can’t win, don’t lose. And we shot ourselves in the foot by losing a game we should never have lost.

“We’re three games into the season. This is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. We know we want to win more games. We know we want to give our supporters more, but we also know that it is a new group and certain things are going against us. The chances we’re creating, we can’t keep missing.”

Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson said, as per the club website: “Yes, it’s always nice getting a late one. Obviously the opposition have got less time to get back into it, although nine minutes extra made us… We had to hang on a little bit and wait for that victory, that winning moment.

“But, yes, just a great way to do it. A really tough game, physically, especially on the back of Thursday and the efforts that the boys put in.

“For them to go again and to finish the way that we did in what was a really tough game against a good team, just showed that willingness to try and go and win it.

“I’m just so pleased with the group today. They left absolutely everything out on the pitch and, as a manager, that’s all you can ever ask of your group, that they give absolutely everything.

“But you want a little bit of quality thrown in and, I think in the closing stages, we definitely showed that.

“Wigan were a good team. They always had a threat for periods of the game, they were on top. We had to suffer a little bit and then when we grew into it, they still always had a threat in the counter-attack situation.

“The game was always in the balance, but [it was] great for Myles [Hippolyte] to go and get that goal. He’ll tell you, I’m sure you’ll interview him! That’s what I want from him. That’s what he’s capable of.

“I want him to get up there in positions where he can go and put the finish, because he’s got the quality, he’s got the energy, the legs. That’s why we kept him on the pitch today, because it felt like he was in the game.

“He’s gone beyond the strikers, great little assist from Donnell [McNeilly] as well and a really good finish. So, pleased for Myles, because that’s one thing I’ve asked of him over the summer is that I want more goals from him, because he’s more than capable.”

@jake_wafc: People blaming Caldwell for the loss is confusing, if our players had finished their chances we couldve scored 5. How is it Caldwells fault that the strikers cant score these goals that have been put on a plate for them? #wafc

@GaryOwen69: Totally agree but ultimately he has picked Perkins to score goals knowing he already has 3 other strikers who even the most optimistic supporter would agree ain’t getting 5 goals this season and if anything he looks the worse of them all #wafc

@RhyssLJ: I get so fuckin annoyed with the “he saved your Club argument”…Pretty sure 99% of fans will be eternally grateful for what he did stepping in but that doesn’t excuse for his actions over the last couple of years, especially with his plans for us suggesting the opposite. #WAFC
