Premier League warns clubs over PSR ‘loophole swap deals’ and spate of ‘unusual transactions’

Premier League warns clubs over PSR ‘loophole transfer swap deals’ and a spate of ‘unusual transactions’ as June draws to a close.

They are monitoring player transfers which could be used to exploit a loophole in its spending rules to prevent any violation of the league’s regulations regarding clubs acting in good faith.

Everton, Aston Villa, and Chelsea are reportedly under pressure to comply with the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2023-24 season.

It seems that they are doing transfers or negotiations, buying and selling of players among themselves as any transfer fees that are perceived as excessively inflated to bypass the PSR rules could potentially be considered a violation.

The transfers which have got everyone talking includes Tim Iroegbunam joining Everton from Aston Villa on Saturday for around £9million, and Lewis Dobbin completing a move in the opposite direction in a separate deal reportedly around £10m.

Chelsea close in on signing Aston Villa academy star Omari Kellyman for £19m. Ian Maatsen is going the other way, also separately, for about £35m.

Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin had been a subject to interest from Newcastle, but as of the 24th of June, is no longer being pursued by the Toon.

Newcastle youngster Yankuba Minteh had been mooted to go the other way, in another separate deal.

Reports claim this helps steer clear of the profit and sustainability rules.

Mail Sport write they have found out the Premier League ‘have the right to review all of these transfers to make sure they are made in good faith. If clubs are found to be purposefully circumventing the rules, they could be at risk of breaching guidelines.’ Read more HERE.

Twitter users reacted as the Premier League warns clubs over PSR ‘loophole swap deals’ and the spate of ‘unusual transactions’…

@Sandance1888:
PL – “You must sell players to comply with PSR”
Clubs – “Ok we’ll sell players”
PL – “No, no not those players! You’re supposed to sell your best players to the established clubs!!”

@Anagram602: Then should be scrapping the outdated PSR rules not scrutinising clubs that have a perfectly legal loophole to get around it cos there’s nothing they can do about it apart from actually getting rid of PSR

@IrishEverton: Wow .. theses deals have been happening for decades but the second it effects how much the cartel 6 have to pay for players it gets looked at !! Richard Masters your an absolute clown! No shame!

@espenstrand:
Dobbin to Villa – €11,8M – ??? 🤔😮
Antony to Man Utd – €95M – NOTHING
Where is the problem now??

@VillaAstonNews: Honestly they made these bloody rules.. i cannot wait for them to get involved in a transfer.. they don’t have enough money to in legal fees..

@neilamcdonald: Man United have clearly snitched here, as their hopes of picking up Branthwaite for a pittance have been dashed

@Davidjocksmith: If they haven’t broke the rules I’m sure they’ll change the rules so villa can’t compete with the fake big 6.

@jason_connolly: I never truly bought into the ‘Cartel’ conspiracy but when you see things like this, you start to think it does have legs. The moment anyone from the ‘other 14,’ exploit a loophole, it gets ‘monitored,’ while City have charges pushed back and Chelsea sell themselves a hotel lol

@TomW1lls: But City can carry on as they are (115), Chelsea can sell hotels to themselves, but as soon as any club outside of THEIR “top 6” tries something different it’s breaching regs. Ok then 👌👍

@CoppellRob: They 100% want to keep the 14 clubs in their place.

@teadrinker68: Buying and selling players during the transfer window isn’t a loophole. Happy to help.

@United053651221: So Chelsea can sell hotels to themselves but clubs can’t sell players to eachother. Cool.

@WoanMr: What’s the matter?. The red cartel not getting their own way. Putting derisory bids in for players and getting told to do one.

@saywattharry: Independent Commission.. ‘you could have sold players to meet PSR. Sells players. ‘No, not those players. The good players, for prices that suit the vulture clubs. Got it? Consider yourselves warned’

@Gre9orypeck09: The premier league would have to step in to value every player. Transfers have so many variables this is totally unworkable. No team would vote for it either. File under ‘complete bollocks’.

@everton_arent: The cartel not happy are they?

@sav4efc: They can monitor all they want. Loopholes are exactly that. Just like Chelsea selling themselves a hotel. Until those loopholes are closed via a premier league vote they can continually be exploited.

@toffee_tower: Clubs have been doing this for decades but as soon as some of the none top 6 do it, it’s a problem? Jesus the game is far beyond corrupt.

@pete_bully: Villa bought a champions league final left back for 35m. Sounds about right to me and the academy player they sold for 19m was a similar age, price, position, prospect, appearances as Chukwuemeka who they sold a couple years before so good luck proving it’s inflated.

@hmmmm123456543: Chelsea sold a hotel to themselves and the PL allowed it. But as soon as teams struggling with PSR start selling academy players to each other then it’s bad faith Savo’s Bandana

@BandanaSavos: Be nice if they reacted to man city’s 115 charges….

@Thorsby1: The PL is protecting the cartel six right to buy cheaply off the other 14. There, fixed it for you.

@KingEightyOne: Hopefully, the Premier league use TransferMarkt to clarify if the correct fees have been paid cos it seems to b the fountain of all knowledge now!! If only TranferMarkt was around to stop Utd spunking £80m on Antony, no one seems bothered if big 6 clubs overpay on players!! #avfc villa

@BenidormVilla: This is all because Everton don’t have to sell Branthwaite to Yanited now. Or in other words… Bollocks

@BlueL91878: Acting in good faith? We’ve sold an academy lad who wasn’t getting in our side for an academy lad who may get in our side.

@win_n10: Everton sold Simms (Coventry), Cannon (Leicester) last year with very similar PL and loan profiles to Dobbin for similar fees so why do you illustrate this with the player who is easily the least controversial transfer of the bunch? Agenda? Man United in a tizzy over Branthwaite?

@toneyq73: So the cartel have complained to masters so it’s now being monitored. Masters may as well say it’s arsenal Liverpool and Newton heath who decide the rules. Everyone knows it

@Davidomahony18: @premierleague why don’t you focus on Man City 115 charges first and then focus on Chelsea selling itself there hotels to get out PSR and want about Man united 1 billion in debt. Then, you can start monitoring the transfers you’ve been told by cartel 6

@GaryMarriott73: FFS protect the cartel again. It’s ok for them to sell hotels to themselves but it’s not ok to sell whatever players they want. Absolute joke. #EPL #FA

@TheVillaDecree: We sold academy players literally last season for £20m £15m and £12m! They may be worried about their cartel 6. But try and point to the values this year all you like! Douglas Luiz value at £50m is sickeningly low. I genuinely expected £80m!

@andyjones1967: Are they going to retrospectively do this or just look at Villa, Newcastle, Everton, etc. for every ‘dodgy’ deal being done today there have been many many more done by the big six historically

@hodgsonaw: Agent Gary Neville will be on the case

@ste1jones:
So the PL wants to stop clubs selling academy assets?
Why is Dobbin selected for the image for this story ?
Did we sell him for £25m?

@Efc240578: Poor big 6 complaining they can’t hand pick from the clubs below, while their multi millions in debt. 😂😂😂😂

@TheVillaPolls: More proof that the Premier League will do anything to satisfy the cartel 6, they now want to review how much each player is worth when the cartel aren’t involved

@TravellingTom: Always the same. Other teams do bad things, don’t hear anything. Everton do something and it’s cracked down on.

@EvertonNewsFeed: Chelsea sold themselves a hotel but the Prem will happily let that slide 😂

@AshtonVilla6: Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool have gone crying to Mommy and daddy by the sounds of it.

@PeterJMacca: What about teams tapping players up to force clubs into selling them at knock down prices? Surely that’s not acting in good faith?
