Police investigate alleged assault as Roy Keane and Micah Richards confront fan at Arsenal

Metropolitan Police investigate an alleged assault as Roy Keane and Micah Richards are seen in footage taking to confront a fan at Arsenal.

A very short video uploaded to social media showed the aftermath of the incident involving Keane and fellow pundit Micah Richards at Arsenal’s game against Manchester United.

Both Keane and Richards have given statements to the Met Police on Sunday after Richards is seen grabbing hold of another man’s shirt against a wall.

Keane, who is standing beside Richards, is also seen speaking in anger at the individual, though it is not clear what sparked the apparent confrontation, or what happened after, but the police have now confirmed they are looking into it.

The Met Police have released the following statement: “Police are investigating following an assault that is alleged to have occurred at the Emirates Stadium during an Arsenal vs Manchester United match on Sunday, 3 September.

“There have been no arrests. Enquiries are ongoing. Any witnesses or those with information are asked to call 101 ref CAD 6961/3 Sept.”

A further update from police read: “On Monday, 4 September, a 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault (ABH). The man has been taken into police custody. Enquiries are ongoing.”

A Sky statement reads: “We understand the police are investigating an alleged assault by a member of the public immediately preceding the footage circulating on social media.

“In the footage seen, Micah Richards was acting to defuse a situation.”

Reports allege that:

– Incident took place in members-only bar as pundits made their way down to the pitch

– The fan reportedly struck Keane on the chest and chin

– Richards stepped in and “pushed the fan back against the door”

– A witness recalled seeing “a small amount of blood on the floor”

– But fan was prevented from inflicted any serious damage

It came after Rice and Jesus pounced in the final moments to give Arsenal a 3-1 victory over United; Marcus Rashford had given the Red Devils the lead but Martin Odegaard hit back 35 seconds after the restart.

Arsenal also thought they had been handed a chance to go in front on the hour mark, with Kai Havertz going down in the box and a penalty was awarded. However, replays showed it was the German looking for contact with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and it was overturned by a VAR check.

Man Utd thought they had won it themselves on 88 minutes when Alejandro Garnacho broke free to score but a close VAR offside call prevented that. Erik ten Hag was adamant it should have stood.

Arsenal now sit two points behind Premier League leader Man City in fifth; while Man Utd find themselves down in 11th, six points behind their neighbours.

Player of the match: Declan Rice (Arsenal)

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta: “We all worked so hard and planned everything for moments like this. These moments will stick with us, with the crowd so connected to the team with the big history of these matches, it’s great. The will, the determination of the team, that will to win and go and go and go, I’m so proud of them.

“A team needs different tools to win football matches, and the capacity to react. We did that in the first half and that set the tone and brought some calmness to the team.”

On Rice: “A tremendous performance. As a holding midfielder, how he needs to dominate his area, to break up play. He was really dominant. And then he produced a magic moment to win us the game. You need to have that quality, that composure and he had it.

On Arsenal’s start: “There’s still 34 games to go. After 38 we will be where we deserve. We played four games, deserved to win four games. We can do better and the team will try to progress, to close games earlier.”

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag: “The performance was alright from us. I thought we played a very good game but everything went against us – then you don’t win the game. We needed a little bit more luck to win the game. It was not offside [for Alejandro Garnacho goal]. It was the wrong angle.

“It was then a penalty on (Rasmus) Hojlund and then we concede a goal that’s a foul on Jonny Evans. It’s so clear and obvious. You can say you need to finish your chances and that you shouldn’t concede a goal after going 1-0 up. This is all true, but I was happy with the performance.”
