Papa John’s Trophy match stopped for 17 minutes after fan throws fireworks onto pitch

The Papa John’s Trophy match between Barrow and Carlisle was stopped for around 17 minutes after a fan throws fireworks onto the pitch.

Footage from iFollow showed that moment a firework was launched from a section of the home end at Holker Street during the 3rd minute of the clash.

The device landed in the Carlisle penalty area and then exploded in front of players, luckily the one closest to the firework – Carlisle keeper Michael Kelly – was unhurt.

Barrow tweeted: “The game has been delayed, whilst the officials can ensure the safety of the players.

“We have a zero tolerance approach for the use of pyrotechnics. Anybody found to be using such devices will be dealt with accordingly.”

Carlisle wrote: “A firework has just been thrown onto the pitch from the home end and gone off on the penalty spot – very dangerous.

“The players are being taken off the pitch due to that incident.

“The players are keeping warm on the far side while we wait to see what is happening.

“The referee and managers are in conversation with police over by the dug outs.

“Tannoy announcer has just said that the game will be delayed until the safety of the players can be guaranteed and further investigations are carried out.

“A further tannoy announcement now as the home fans are moved from the end behind the goal.

“We are back under way here at Barrow – about a 17 minute delay due to that firework so plenty of added time at the end of the half to come.”

BARROW STATEMENT:

Following tonight’s fixture against Carlisle United, the Club have made the following statement:

During tonight’s Papa John’s Trophy game against Carlisle United, an incident occurred which resulted in a firework being thrown onto the playing surface.

Barrow Association Football Club has a zero tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour, including the use of pyrotechnics, and strongly condemns this behaviour.

After working with Barrow Police, a suspect has been identified and arrested and will consequently be banned for life from the SO Legal Stadium.

Barrow Association Football Club must emphasise that we do not want to be associated with these people and they are not welcome at the SO Legal Stadium.

A live investigation is underway, and if anyone has any information in relation to the incident please contact PC Rickie Wallbank, the dedicated Football Officer for the Club on rickie.wallbank@cumbria.police.uk

As result of this, the Club will now be looking to implement measures to ensure this incident does not happen again.
