Oliver Glasner couldn’t believe that his side weren’t given a penalty as Gvardiol brings down Eze

Oliver Glasner couldn’t believe that his Crystal Palace side weren’t given a penalty as Josko Gvardiol brings down Eberechi Eze.

Josko Gvardiol and Eberechi Eze collide inside Man City’s penalty area, Palace fans screamed for a penalty but play continued on.

The decision was met with loud boss from the home crowd especially by those behind the goal with replays showing that Palace were hard done by.

Moments later, Josko Gvardiol was booked for dissent after arguing with the referee following a challenge on Jordan Ayew.

Mark Warburton said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “I thought Eberechi Eze went down too easy at first glance, but on the replay you can see that Josko Gvardiol has got his arms around the forward. It was a close one for sure.”

Clinton Morrison on Soccer Saturday: “Gvardiol leans into the back of Eze, but it is never a penalty and VAR made the right call there…”

Ian Wright tweeted: “Dalot was clumsy and was punished, so Gvardiol was clumsy and no pen 🧐”

It took three minutes for the game’s first goal. Manchester City were caught cold by a pass that split the defence and Jean-Philippe Mateta went ahead to finish in-off the post.

Mark Warburton on BBC Radio 5 Live: “City have the corner, it looks dangerous, but Palace have the breakaway and Jean-Philippe Mateta takes it superbly.

“I thought he might have had too much time, thought he may square it, but he showed supreme calmness to slot the ball into the bottom corner.

“A great start from the home side.”

Then 10 minutes later, Man City were back level thanks to a goal of brilliance by captain Kevin de Bruyne, cutting inside and curled an inch-perfect finish past Dean Henderson.

Warburton: “Kevin de Bruyne is starting to dominate proceedings. Oscar Bobb and Rico Lewis are combining well down the right hand flank too.

“They look so threatening. You can’t help but feel as though the second goal is not far away.”

With 30 minutes on the clock, Man City had 77% possession. Six attempts. Four on target.

Rodri was caught out and Jordan Ayew made his way towards the box, a three on one, then Ayew sends the ball crashing against the bar.

Warburton: “I think Jordan Ayew had to square that ball.

“Rodri was robbed twice in the middle of the pitch in such a dangerous area, and Palace were in at the City goal.

“There are opportunities in this for Palace, but they need to make sure that they take them.”

Then came the incident which saw Palace not being awarded a penalty, as seen above.

The half time whistle blew to a standing ovation from both sets of fans as the players make their way to the dressing rooms.

And Man City came back out and went ahead on 47 minutes, a cross sent into the box was headed by Palace’s Joachim Andersen into the path of Rico Lewis netted about eight yards.

And from there on you just couldn’t stop City from scoring. Haaland making it 3-1 on 66 minutes.

Great play involving Jack Grealish and Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland finishes from inside the six yard box.

Goal number four for Man City on 70 minutes as Kevin de Bruyne hammered it past Dean Henderson from inside the box.

Palace managed to get a consolation goal on 86 minutes. A lovely near-post finish from Odsonne Edouard after that earlier miss to make it 2-4.

It does put goal difference into focus regarding the Premier League title race as Manchester City’s goal difference is now +40 while Liverpool, who play tomorrow, are +42 and Arsenal have +48.

Manchester City goalscorer Rico Lewis on TNT Sports: “It’s a very difficult place to come. The fans that travel every week, we thank them so much because it means so much. To get the win is amazing.

“The main message was to keep on going. The chances would come. We needed to get into the box and that’s what we did.

“As a kid you dream of scoring a goal and celebrating. I want to get more goals and assists.

“I don’t know but I enjoy playing midfield the most. I want to contribute but the manager decides where I’m most effective.

“It’s just like every other title race. We have to win every game. There’s three teams in it and we have to be the strongest team.”
