Nuno Espirito Santo calls for support as he responds to West Ham fans’ boycott plans

Nuno Espirito Santo calls for support as he responds to West Ham fans’ boycott plans for the upcoming game against Brentford.

He spoke of the importance of fan support to create a strong home atmosphere and help the team perform, while choosing to focus on the game rather than the protests.

Brentford’s assistant manager Keith Andrews acknowledged the tense atmosphere and hopes to capitalise on it with a strong start, factoring in the fan discontent as part of their game plan.

An open letter from Hammers United welcomes Nuno and his staff, clarifying that their “No More BS” campaign targets Brady and Sullivan, not the team or coaching staff.

The group supports Nuno but is proceeding with a boycott of the Brentford match to pressure the owners to resign, believing it’s necessary to protect the club’s future.

They assure Nuno of their full support, despite their absence from the stands for this game, and hope for a resolution that allows the club to thrive.

“I wish they’re all there, I wish,” said Nuno. “I hope that all our fans could join us and help us facing Brentford because it’s going to be very tough.

“Like I said, it’s an honest reflection. It’s up to us now to give back to the fans so that they can come closer and support us.”

Asked how he felt about the situation, Nuno said he was trying to stay focused on Brentford.

“We as a group and squad, we ignore,” he said. “We try to ignore, focus on the task and perform and compete well. Also, the fans can be there. That’s what we’re focused on.”

He added: “For me it’s very hard to analyse what’s happened before. What I’m doing is try to improve, realising that home factor is really important.

“Like I said to you before, it’s up to us now to grow closer to the fans, to make them supporters and help us so we can change everything and become a real fortress.”

Brentford boss Keith Andrews was asked if a fast start could help Brentford capitalise on the mood in east London, he replied: “Yeah, that’s certainly the hope.

“We’ll approach the game in a way where we feel we can get a result.

“We approach every game looking to win, clearly. You’ve got to understand the environment you go into, the differences, the fan element, the individual ability, obviously the tactical approach of the opposition.

“All those things are part of your game plan, it’s not just purely the tactical element.

“You need to understand every angle of it and I think we will do. We’ve introduced that to the players this morning and we’ll build that over the next few days going into the game.”

An open letter to Nuno and coaching staff of West Ham United

We would like to welcome our new manager, Nuno Espírito Santo, and his coaching staff to the Club and wish them all the very best as they work together to improve performances on the pitch and put West Ham United back on track.

As you will no doubt be aware, prior to your arrival at the Club, we launched the No More BS campaign which is calling for the resignations of Karren Brady and David Sullivan.

This campaign was not aimed at your predecessors, it is not aimed at you and your team, and we would like to take this opportunity to make it absolutely clear that you have our full support.

We held our first, and very successful, protest two weeks ago, and have a variety of pre-planned protests over the coming weeks and months. One of these is a boycott of the match against Brentford on Monday 20 October.

The decision to hold a boycott was not taken lightly, but we believe that given the serious nature of the damage that will continue to be inflicted on our Club while Ms Brady and Mr Sullivan remain in place, it is a necessary and justifiable step that must be taken.

We are already seeing signs that Ms Brady and Mr Sullivan are extremely worried, and that pressure is being brought to bear in a variety of different ways, as they attempt to entice fans to break ranks and attend the game.

We expect this to escalate as the day of the game approaches, and we have no doubt that Ms Brady and Mr Sullivan would not hesitate to take any measures designed to disrupt the boycott, including those which would sow division among the fans, and division between the fans and the team.

We believe it is right and proper that the fans are able to make their protest, and that the players are able to do their work on the pitch unencumbered by the machinations of Ms Brady and Mr Sullivan as they attempt to, for want of a better expression, save face.

There is of course one simple way to bring about an early conclusion to all of this, and that is for Ms Brady and Mr Sullivan to resign, and for the remaining board of directors to appoint competent and professional replacements.

In the meantime, you, your coaching staff, and your players can rest assured that you have our full support even if, for one game only, that support will be in spirit rather than in the flesh.

We hope that you will all appreciate what we, as fans of West Ham United, reluctantly find ourselves having to do, and share our hopes that this Club will soon be able to live up to its full potential. We desperately want all of you to be a part of a thriving football club, and to share in the success we all deserve.

Thank you for your understanding.
