Nottingham Forest 3-0 Tottenham: Thomas Frank snaps at reporter over Vicario comparison

Thomas Frank snaps at a reporter over an Guglielmo Vicario error comparison after Nottingham Forest beat Tottenham 3-0 on Sunday.

Sky Sports’ Pat Davison suggested the first goal by Nottingham Forest was a similar mistake from  the keeper in the defeat to Fulham.

Vicario had an afternoon to forget once again, a poor pass to Archie Gray, allowing Sangaré to intercept and set up Callum Hudson-Odoi for a tap-in on the half hour mark.

Hudson-Odoi then doubled the lead 50 minutes when his intended cross looped over Vicario and into the net.

Despite a triple substitution by manager Thomas Frank, Spurs were unable to spark a comeback, with Sangaré then sealing the win with a stunning long-range strike that beat Vicario via the post.

The result ended Tottenham’s hopes of a third consecutive win, while helping Forest pull five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank to Sky Sports: “It was hugely disappointing. It’s burning, annoying. That was a bad performance. Especially first half, overall we looked disjointed. We didn’t win enough duels. And then we couldn’t hit each other, it seems like we gave the ball away every time we won it back.

“Of course the first two goals are two mistakes, that happens. We need to work to be more consistent. It’s two steps forward and a step back today.

“That’s down to individuals. We are in it together, we win together and lose together. It’s hugely irritating that we perform like this today. Simple passing, I think we lose the ball 20 times, simple passes.”

On the decision to pass out from the back that led to Nottingham Forest’s first goal: “It’s a clear one, you see it in the Premier League every week, Serie A, La Liga all over the world. In, bounce it out with your first touch.

“On paper, black and white we lost 3-0 here. The better team won today. When things are going against us we need to keep doing the right thing and keep our cool heads.”

On Djed Spence’s reaction to being substituted: “I haven’t seen it. Thank you for the information.”

On some fans’ negative reactions: “Like I’ve said before, if you don’t perform that’s more than fair enough their frustration.”

Frank to BBC Match of the Day: “I think there have been some positives step forward the last three games. Today the performance and the result was bad. That was definitely a step backward. A very frustrating afternoon.

“I had a good feeling coming into this game. Today it seems like we were in between things. After 1-0 it seems like we were too disjointed. We definitely didn’t win enough duels or second balls. And another big thing is we kept losing the ball. That doesn’t help win football matches.

“Sometimes you just have a bad day for whatever reason. There are various things. We are dealing with 11 individuals that need to be in sync. That didn’t happen. And then we made two mistakes for the first two goals.”

On Archie Gray’s error for the first goal: “I think he responded quite well. He still asked for the ball constantly and kept going. The ball out to Archie is not a problem, it’s just a simple bounce, all teams do it. It’s just you need to do one touch. Archie will learn from that.

“I think there’s pressure on all of us every game. We need to preform. I’m pretty sure it’s not a one-man band. It would be pretty bad if it is all on me or all on the players.

“We will bounce back that’s for sure.”

Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche to BBC Match of the Day: “Very pleased, the work the players have been putting in has been fantastic. I thought the football today was a really good mix. We know they have talent but the glue that held us together was the work ethic.

“It’s choosing when to press. It’s the football intelligence to see a bad ball and when someone is under pressure. Seeing it and activating it is something these lads are improving at.”

On Callum Hudson-Odoi’s second goal: “It’s a cross, ain’t it? He does do that all the time, we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

“I’m delighted today.

“[Ibrahim Sangare] He’s enjoying his football I think. I thought he was excellent. Elliot [Anderson] was also excellent today. We know he can play but he was terrific today doing all the things that managers notice. The nuts and bolts I call them.

“It’s not just one player. Massive credit to the players the way they’re absorbing what we’re trying to do and activating it.

“There’s still work to do but it’s a much better league table. But it’s got to continue, of course.”

Dyche to Sky Sports: “I thought the lads were outstanding from start to finish. Our shape was good, the pressing was good. So much we see as coaches.

“We want to give the players a base to work from. I trust their judgement. If it’s a bad ball go press, if it’s a bad ball sit back. We were fantastic at that.

“The players are looking fitter, sharper and also the quality, I know we have quality here, it was on show today. It’s often about building the basics. The players are doing it brilliantly, all of them. We’re building that squad mentality.

“It’s a work in progress, a constant work in progress.

“Callum [Hudon-Odoi] has been knocking on the door. We know what a good player he is at this football club. Elliot Anderson – talk about the nuts and bolt, and the stuff he does off the ball.

“When I got in here it needed some sort of correcting. We’ve done what we can, but the players deserve the credit, they’re the ones out there. I think they’ve been fantastic. One game like that doesn’t solve everything, but there are clear signs.”

Tottenham’s Mohammed Kudus: “Not good enough. A very disappointing result. We didn’t create enough today, including myself. We need more effort in our all-round game.

“To win a game in the Premier League is very difficult. We need the same input every single day. We lacked that. We needed to do more.

“The final quality, including myself, some of the decisions we took today was a bit in a rush. We need to pick it up and focus on the next game.

“It happens. For me I’m really glad he [Archie Gray] wants to get on the ball. That’s how we want to play, players who want to be on the ball. I’m very happy to see after the mistake he still wanted to get on the ball.”

Tottenham defender Pedro Porro to Sky Sports: “The away fans don’t deserve this. Today this was a bad game from us. Now we’re focusing on the next game.

“Every game is difficult in the Premier League. We can play on Tuesday and win in the Champions League but in the Premier League it is different.

“Maybe more intensity, I don’t know. But I feel especially sorry for the fans. The fans don’t deserve this today.”

Nottingham Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic: “It was a super performance from the team. Today there was discipline, ambition and confidence. I want to complement every offensive player for the defensive rocks and the pressing that they did.

“Everyone today was at their maximum.

“It’s so important keeping clean sheets. Like I say it was a team effort. It’s a collective sport.”

Nottingham Forest goalscorer Callum Hudson-Odoi to Sky Sports: “As a forward you want to be contributing as much as possible. It’s been hard for me recently, but I’m happy today.

“Our mentality from the start was go, go, go. 100%. From start to finish every single person was working their socks off. You can tell we wanted it.

“I’m delighted, it’s been a while. I’m happy to get a couple today and hopefully it keeps flowing from now on.

“Today was an outstanding performance from start to finish.”

Was it a shot or a cross for his second goal?: “Haha, I know what you’re going to ask me, it’s a mix of both! Cross/shot, and it went in perfectly, ahaha!

“You can see the connections are building more and more. We’re improving every time we step out onto the pitch. We’re enjoying our football.”

Hudson-Odoi to BBC Match of the Day: “To get a goal I’m buzzing with it and I’m happy for the result as well.

“I’d say it’s a shot/cross. It’s a mixture of both. I’m buzzing. The whole team performance, it was a collective performance and we’re really happy with the way things went today.

“From minute one the way we were playing you could tell we really wanted the game today. We want to be getting wins like this and we want everybody to see how hard we’re working.

“We know where we are. We’re just trying to get as high as we can up the table. Games like this give us the motivation and energy to get as high as possible.

“When you get niggles and injuries you don’t want to be sitting out. I’m happy to be out there and enjoying playing football with the boys.”

Where you thinking you could maybe score a hat-trick?: “I was telling every one of them to pass it!”

Twitter users reacted after Thomas Frank snaps at a reporter over an Guglielmo Vicario error comparison after Nottingham Forest beat Tottenham 3-0 on Sunday…

@donovantina155: He’s so uncomfortable, never seen him respond like that

@ciarann85:
‘You see it every week’
You will if you keep playing Vicario

@HalfwayLino: Look how patronising he is. Acting as if the interviewer has no idea what football is 🤬

@LewisFFC17: He’s starting to crack haha

@melstarsg: Focus on the first goal ignores the whole match; Forest had ample space to freely shoot & cross with ease throughout, while we had no patterns of play to pass & move as a team to create chances. Story of the season. Coupled with a team ready to blame fans is bad news. #THFC

@JohnnyBowe1: He hasn’t a clue. His goalkeeper is not good enough at this level and he keeps covering for him.

@danparnell: Showing signs of pressure now, get thumped by Liverpool and I don’t see him lasting too much longer. Not entirely sure who comes in to replace him though, hardly a great deal of options around at the moment.

@essexLADtb27: I don’t like Frank at all ! His attitude reaks of a man that’s massively under pressure and he knows it

@Grahamthecabbie: Frank is right. Vicario made two completely different types of cock up. Mind you they were both really fine efforts! 👍

@ColinBu65762157: Both were stupid goals to concede, caused by idiotic tactics. Not learning from mistakes is unforgivable.

@THFCSpurs20: Throwing a kid under the bus. Nice one Frank

@alfieconnx: Vicario had possession, no stress. He pointlessly gives it to a tightly marked Gray. Why ? Because he’s so erratic in EVERYTHING he does. No thought process. Then there’s polls. Whose fault was the first goal ? Give over FFS

@KayStanton: Vicario is partly to blame. The goalkeeper can see the pitch ahead of him and why play that pass to Gray when he could be under pressure. There were two other players he could have played they pass to but he played the difficult one!
