Liam Rosenior speaks on the decision to become the new head coach of Chelsea, and reveals his plans for them going forward.
The 41-year-old signs a long-term contract until 2032, replacing Enzo Maresca who departed on New Year’s Day, and joins from RC Strasbourg (a sister club under BlueCo ownership).
Chelsea currently sit 5th in the Premier League table, with 31 points from 20 games played, but have gone winless in their last four games, and will want to hold on to Champions League qualification.

CHELSEA STATEMENT:
Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Liam Rosenior as head coach of the men’s team.
The Englishman has signed a contract with the club that will take him through to 2032.
Rosenior arrives at Stamford Bridge after coaching overseas with RC Strasbourg, where he led the French club to European qualification for the first time in 19 years in his first season, and following earlier roles in England with Hull City and Derby County.
On moving to the Premier League, he said: ‘I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed Head Coach of Chelsea Football Club. This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies.
‘My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play as we continue winning trophies. To be entrusted with this role means the world to me and I want to thank all involved for the opportunity and faith in undertaking this job. I will give everything to bring the success this club deserves.
‘I believe deeply in teamwork, unity, togetherness and working for one another, and those values will be at the heart of everything we do. They will be the foundation of our success.
‘I am excited to work with this extremely talented group of players and staff, to build strong connections on and off the pitch, and to create an environment where everyone feels united and driven by the same goal.
‘There is a real hunger to win, and I will give everything, every single day, to help this team compete and win at the very highest level to make everyone connected and proud to be a part of Chelsea Football Club.
‘I want our fans to be proud of who we are and what we represent in every single game that we play. They are the soul of this enormous, historic and huge football club.
‘I cannot wait to meet you all. I cannot wait to get started.’
Liam has shown that he can build teams with a clear way of playing while setting the highest standards with players on and off the pitch. While there will continue to be a focus on player development, the Club’s expectations and ambitions remain high.
Liam has the ability to get the best out of this squad quickly and joins us with the responsibility and the backing to ensure Chelsea continues to compete at the top level in all competitions this season and in seasons to come.
Welcome to Chelsea, Liam!

Liam Rosenior’s dad gave an emotional speech on TV before his son took over at Chelsea. Leroy said: “He happens to be my oldest son and if people didn’t know already and yeah he has been strongly linked.
“And you know if he was to get the job I think it would be absolutely amazing.
“As a family we’ve been on a journey, you know, my dad came over in in the 50s from Sierra Leone, West Africa, in the 50s you know with nothing but his bags.
“I played obviously professional football in the 80s and the 90s and Liam was around that for a big part.
“But for a young Englishman to be linked with a job like this is absolutely amazing.
“So look if it was to happen family wise it’d be amazing but you know what, you know why I’m buzzing because he might come home because I might be able to see him.
“I haven’t seen him for such a long time. So for me to see my son regularly it’s been something that I’ve missed.
“So the reason why I’m really buzzing about it is that he might be home. I might see him more.”
STRASBOURG STATEMENT:
Departure of Liam Rosenior
Arriving in Strasbourg in the summer of 2024, Liam Rosenior bought into the Racing project, to which he contributed with demand and commitment. The dynamic he boosted at the head of the team resulted in a sporting progression marked by the club’s first European qualification in 20 years. By finishing at the top of the UEFA Conference League group stage, Racing is already assured of playing in the round of 16 of the competition.
“I thank Liam Rosenior for the work done with his staff. This period allowed Racing to take important steps, continue its progress and become an even more ambitious club”
Marc Keller, president of the Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace.
Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace wishes Liam Rosenior success for the rest of his career and will soon communicate on the appointment of our new coach.
Statement from Strasbourg supporters federation:
“The transfer of Liam Rosenior marks another humiliating step in Racing’s subservience to Chelsea. For two and a half years, along with others, we have been trying to raise the alarm about this.
“The problem goes far beyond the mid-season sporting impact and the ambitions of a young coach. It is structural; the future of French club football is at stake.
“Every additional contortion by Marc Keller, every extra minute spent at the helm of the club, is an insult to the tremendous work accomplished before 2023. What was seen by many as an outrageous move last September increasingly looks like sound advice: he must leave. Now.
“The FSRCS will coordinate closely with the three other associations actively fighting against multiple ownership, as well as all people of goodwill, to define the next steps.” @fsrcs #CFC

Twitter users reacted after Liam Rosenior speaks on decision to become new Chelsea head coach and reveals his plans for them…
@CFCDaily: Like anyone I’ll give them a chance. Regardless of the hierarchy. I believe we have a good enough squad for 5th place as a minimum so they’ll be my expectations for Rosenior. It’s not like he comes into the job straight into a Premier League game. He will have 2 cup games first. 2032, why? Not even the best coaches in world football get that long?
@LForeverblue: Keep in mind we’ve had 5 different managers in less than that amount, these clowns never learns
@dcfcpete82: Excited about Rosenior’s appointment at Chelsea, really hope he gets a fair crack at it, for me he was the right man at the wrong time for us, really talented classy coach, hope he’s a success #cfc #dcfc
@boocal_21: Personally I’m really happy for Liam! 🙌🏻 Showed during his stint at Derby that he was the brains behind the small successes under Rooney reign IMO, and has pushed on since then! Interesting to see how he develops at a club of Chelsea’s size! 🐏 #DCFC
@_MarshJ: Wish all the best for him. Now sort us some loans out on the cheap 👍 #hcafc
@GeorgeSmileyOBE: First of all, don’t agree with it, CFC works better an experienced coach not a internship. Do I blame Rosenior 100% not, salary uplift, CFC CV uplift. A sporting structure set up to fail. 5.5yr wow don’t learn do they. But I’ll support him good luck Liam you’ll need it..
@BenStrodder: This is absolutely mental, but must admit I’m very pleased for him. To think he was sacked by City just a few years ago. 😂 Really hope he does well and doesn’t get the same treatment their previous managers have 🤞🏻🧡 #hcafc #hisnanasfromhull
@GarySmithJnr: I like Liam Rosenior, he comes across really well. That being said, it is a surprise with his CV he has been given the Chelsea job. However, I think he will do really well.
@CarrieBrownTV: If I had a pound for every time I’ve heard about Liam Rosenior’s quality and potential, I’d be wealthy. This is a big job within a model that demands experience to navigate and Liam has it. Success in the PL, however, takes time and a steep learning curve; Chelsea will need patience to deliver. #CFC #Football
@jameshoggarth: Although my meetings with Liam were limited, one small take away is that he always remembered my name and asked how I was even through to the club’s POTY awards night in 2023. This opportunity might have come quickly, but he’s reaching the point of his predicted potential #hcafc
