Fight breaks out with fans caught up in it during big screen showing of Sunderland v Newcastle

A fight breaks out with fans caught up in it during a big screen showing of Sunderland v Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Footage has gone viral of absolute chaos unfolding, said to be at the Mercure Newcastle George
Washington Hotel Golf & Spa.

The video shows a large fight with groups of people pushing, shoving, and throwing punches. Chairs are thrown while others attempt to break up the brawl, but struggle as more and more get involved.

A woman with blond hair is seen on the floor at one point, a male struggles to stay on his feet, tripping over after being pushed.

The camera then shows different angles of the fighting, shouts from concerned witnesses and the look of worry from staff as the venue is trashed.

The video has gone on to get over a million views and thousands of likes across various social media sites including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson has said: “Just after 4pm yesterday (Sunday), we were called to a premises on Stone Cellar Road in Washington in response to a report of a disturbance. It was reported a number of people were fighting inside.

“Upon officer arrival, many of those believed to have been involved had left the area. Enquiries into the report are ongoing to identify anyone involved in the altercation.

Nick Woltemade’s own goal decided the derby on Wearside, the German striker headed beyond his own goalkeeper to send Sunderland up to 7th in the table.

After the game, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris said: “We will enjoy this result, but I am happy for the players, the club and the fans because they deserve it.

“I understood what this game meant to the people of the community really quickly – it was probably on the first day when I arrived!

“I am happy for the fans because it was an important game for them, and they were part of the process today.

“It is so enjoyable to feel this energy and support. The players managed the situation properly.

“We stayed focused on our game model and how we wanted to play. The intensity was really important because we knew that it was the key for this game. They are really intense, and we matched them.

“We weren’t too low or too high – we had the right balance.

“After that, we played our game with the ball. We were composed and really agile and flexible in managing the pressure.

“The last part was to score, and we need to be a bit more clinical in the final third.

“We move on now, we work hard, and we will see what the future brings. We have had ups and downs, but we always stay connected, and we believe that we have to work hard to be competitive in this league.”

Newcastle’s Eddie Howe said: “It’s a horrible feeling, it’s very painful. It was not our finest game.

“It’s so disappointing, we know our performance was not what it needed to be. But no, I don’t think it will define our season. Nothing is lost today, it was a game of very few chances settled by a freak goal and we couldn’t create the openings we wanted.

“The effort was there but the quality wasn’t. We were disappointed with our creative output. We haven’t delivered. It’s difficult to take.”

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes told Sky Sports: “We didn’t perform the way we can perform. It’s frustrating, it makes me angry. Our performance was not there today – no shooting the ball, no crossing the ball, no passing.

“It’s so frustrating for me to come here today but the fans are right to be annoyed because it’s a tough one to accept.

“Everyone came here and knew exactly what it meant for the fans. The whole messaging in changing room was ‘give it to the fans’ and we didn’t. It’s so embarrassing.

“I’m very angry for the performance. We missed the consistency, which is not there, the mentality’s not there.”
