Newcastle fans sing hilarious chant mocking Everton’s Jordan Pickford

Newcastle fans sing a rather hilarious chant mocking Everton’s Jordan Pickford with inflatable dinosaurs once again seen in the stands.

The Magpies came out 1-0 winners over Everton last night which saw Eddie Howe’s side move closer to the Premier League’s top four and the clash with the Toffees allowed the home fans to taunt the ex-Sunderland keeper for having short arms.

In reference to the England international’s arms, the NUFC faithful brought inflatable dinosaurs into the stadium, with some going as far as dressing up in dinosaur costumes and running up and down the stand trying to get his attention.

A section of the home fans waved the inflatables in his direction but Pickford didn’t react, which shows he’s learnt from his past run-ins with Newcastle having previously been criticised for his antics when the two sides met in the north east in the 2018/19 season.

At the time, Newcastle came from 2-0 down to beat Everton 3-2, with Pickford at fault for the equaliser. He clashed with the crowd on multiple occasions and was ultimately left red faced.

“With me being a Sunderland lad, in front of 52,000 Newcastle fans hurling abuse at you for the full game, maybe it did get to me a little bit too much,” he later admitted.

“But I’m only 25 and I think as a learning curve for me, I think that’s how I can improve.”

Other supporters attempted to wind up Pickford by singing the chant: “He’s only got little arms, he’s only got little arms, he couldn’t touch the crossbar, he couldn’t touch the crossbar, he couldn’t touch the crossbar, he’s only got little arms!”

The chant was first heard by Liverpool supporters after Pickford conceded a memorable late goal in the Merseyside derby at Anfield in 2018.

With the match goalless heading into the 6th minute of injury time at the end of the second half, Pickford misjudged a looping shot from van Dijk.

He just about tipped the Dutchman’s effort onto his bar, with the ball bouncing back into play – giving Divock Origi the simplest of finishes to seal a win for Liverpool.

It sparked chaotic scenes at Anfield, with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp famously running onto the pitch to celebrate the goal.

Origi’s goal has since gone down in Liverpool folklore, with its related chant also adopted by Newcastle supporters as a way to annoy Pickford.

He will hope for a better evening on Saturday when Everton host Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Newcastle, meanwhile, travel to face Tottenham in north London on Sunday.

Miguel Almiron’s superb first-half opener gave Newcastle their fifth win of the season; Dominic Calvert-Lewin made his first start of the season for Everton, but they did not have a shot on target and it means Frank Lampard’s side have lost their last three games.

Everton boss Frank Lampard, speaking to BBC Sport: “The stats I understand because in the box we weren’t clinical enough. In terms of the overall game in terms of us competing, the stats were very good. It was a close match, Newcastle will know that. They are obviously ahead of us in their development. I think it was my second game we came here, and you could see where we were at and where we are trying to get to. It was two evenly-matched teams in general play but in the box we weren’t clinical enough today. I am pretty pleased with parts of the performance.

“They are physical team, they are fast on the counters so they will always give teams problems. I don’t think they gave us huge amounts of problems. The amount of times we played through their midfield with good play and the next bit isn’t there. That is why the stats read low on chances. We should have had many more chances than we created. That is the one reflection I have on the game.

“He [Dominic Calvert-Lewin] hasn’t played for a long time, since the back end of last season. He is a big player for us and when you lose a player of that level… we lost Richarlison in the summer and we are rebuilding. It is two big players. It is nicer to have him back in. I had to take him off as precaution and with the idea of Palace coming at the weekend.

“I thought it was a penalty [for a foul on Anthony Gordon in the box]. I worry that he will not get penalties because people are talking about him a lot last season. If you ask me if it is a foul, it is a nudge in the back and contact on the foot. For me that is a penalty. I am not saying it is a clear one but when you can look back on VAR, it is a penalty.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Sport: “The performance was very good, in a different way to how we have been at times this season. It wasn’t free-flowing football, it was a very competitive game, a lot of fight in midfield, very physical. I am delighted with character shown and how we defended as a team.

“For the whole team that should give them enormous pleasure [another clean sheet], because that was a real team performance today. We defended our goal and goalkeeper very well. Everton are a strong team. They put a lot of balls into our box, a lot of direct play, and we had to deal with that.”

On Miguel Almiron: “Confidence is the main starting point. He has scored some spectacular goals in my time here and today’s was right up there. He is playing very well with and without the ball. He has always worked very hard for the team. It is good to see him get individual recognition for all that work.”

On harmony between the team and fans: “It is so important that we enhance that. We try to show our appreciation. We know it costs a lot of time and money. They have to give a lot of that to support us.”

On expectations: “My expectation is that we continue to give our all in every game. The margins between success and failure are very small. If we keep giving what we are I think we will have a successful season.”

Newcastle goalscorer Miguel Almiron, speaking to BBC Sport: “I am feeling very good because of the moment of the team and the momentum. I want to keep working hard to be in the same way.

“I think the confidence that the manager has given to me, I try to improve in every session. I have to thank my colleagues as they help me every day.

“It is always very special to score a goal at St James’ with these special fans. It is a shame I could not score in the second half but we managed to win the game.”
