Neil Harris warns Emakhu to learn his lesson after being “goaded” into red card by Preston’s Brady

Millwall boss Neil Harris warns Aidomo Emakhu to learn his lesson after being “goaded” into a red card by Preston North End’s Robbie Brady.

Photos and videos have surfaced online after Emakhu was shown a red card in the closing stages of Saturday’s Championship fixture. This came after he had already been booked for diving.

Harris was left frustrated over the red card, emphasising that Emakhu needs to learn from this experience, his comments suggesting a mix of disappointment over the red card and a pragmatic view on the need for players to maintain discipline, especially when the game is in a comfortable state, especially at 3-0 up.

Harris highlighted that regardless of the provocation, Emakhu should not have engaged in any manner that risked further punishment.

Emakhu initially received a booking as his fall to the turf was deemed to be a dive by referee Darren Bond. But Bond then dismissed the youngster after he tangled with Robbie Brady.

Harris said, per London News Online: “I’ve just tried to watch it again but the broadcast cuts off to a different angle – so you don’t see the contact.

“So I’m not going to comment to say whether the referee or Aidomo has got it right or wrong.

“All I will say is that Aidomo should not be getting involved in that situation, whether it is a red card or not – do not put the referee in that situation where he has to make a decision. Not playing at home in a comfortable position, which we are, especially while we are short of options at the attacking end of the pitch as well.

“It is certainly something Aidomo has got to learn from.”

He began his three game ban this week, unable to play in the 1-0 defeat to Cardiff on Tuesday, his side lacking attacking numbers with Josh Coburn and Tom Bradshaw ruled out injured.

“Having seen it back, Aidomo reacted to being goaded by an opponent, an experienced opponent,” Harris said to South London Press.

“Aidomo has been slightly naive with his reaction. It happens with young players and the emotion of the moment.

“It’s not ideal for us and it’s certainly not ideal for Aidomo. But there is nothing we can do about it now. We looked at the case to appeal and didn’t feel we had any grounds with the decision.

“What the Preston player does to affect Aidomo’s mindset isn’t any of my concern, to be honest, nothing is going to change afterwards.

“Aidomo has to learn from the moment and make sure it doesn’t happen again in his Millwall career and his future career.”

Perry Ng earned a managerless Bluebirds side their first victory of the season against Millwall on Tuesday night.

Goals from George Honeyman, Romain Esse and Macauley Langstaff helped Neil Harris’ side pick up a 3-1 victory on Preston last weekend.

Millwall’s Neil Harris, per Sky Sports, after the win against Preston: “Ultimately, it’s a really good day for us, a really strong performance.

“I’m delighted for the three goalscorers, it was really important for all three goalscorers – Macauley and G to get off the mark and for Romain to get his first home goal, so confidence is really high in the changing room.

“G scores and then sets up Macauley for the third goal as well, so it’s really good to see the nine and 10 in that combination.

“I’m obviously really pleased for Romain as well and he just keeps lighting the place up with his movement and his use of the ball.

“I thought first half we dominated proceedings and I was really pleased with my goalkeeper [Lukas Jensen].

“I thought he kicked well, I thought he was assured on crosses and two really big saves as well – the one in the first half [from Brad Potts] was a really important save.”

Preston’s Paul Heckingbottom: “We got what we deserved, really, starting like that. We were really slow to start.

“We spoke so much about their set-plays and their threat and you can’t always stop good heading of the ball, but more often than not the area he heads it down to is the danger, and we spoke about that a lot.

“To concede that goal was really poor on our part, but it was coming; they’d already hit the bar and we’d had a few warnings.

“I felt that shook us into life a bit and we had a couple of good moments, and then the second goal is a counter-attack from our set-play.

“If you go 2-0 down, it’s difficult, especially here because Millwall can just sit in and deny space.

“We made some changes at half-time, created a good chance and then 60 seconds later we’re 3-0 down, again from being out-competed.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Neil Harris warns Emakhu to learn his lesson after being “goaded” into a red card by Preston’s Robbie Brady…

@SPJ91: Complete head loss from Emakhu, stupid for diving and even worst reaction. Does him no favours with Harris now #Millwall

@jack_clarke: He made a lot of it but defender clearly clipped him. No reason for him to go down otherwise as he was through on goal

@SPJ91: At 3-0 the whole thing is unnecessary for me, I didn’t think he was clipped which if he was fair enough

@deanmfc1885: We keep hearing these you players need time let them learn this is no different don’t be to harsh on the lad. I like the way he backed himself. He’ll learn from that

@Gry70B: It was a dive he didn’t get clipped. He’s a young lad I’m sure Harris had a little word in his ear .

@TonyMunday1968: He did dive but the reaction was because the defender kicked him in the back whilst on the floor

@philclarke0170: Hard to see how not a single Preston player is cautioned in all this either, Storey clearly comes in aggressively with both hands shoving Aidomo.

@4thGenCOYL: What I didn’t like was non of our senior players came rushing over and just left Aidomo to himself at the start.

@zamp69wall: They should’ve all got yellows. For the trip and for a few sticking their noses in and just aggravating the whole situation even more. I can see why Aidomo reacted like that, whether right or wrong.

@StanLDN: Weasel behaviour from Brady, a fellow Irish international. Went unpunished so appealable. Don’t think it’s the club’s style to complain about stuff like that, but would be a show of support to Aidomo if they did and I think he needs that at the moment.

@speeddemon8021: It’s a dive and it’s a red you just cannot react like that in todays game like it or not that is the way of things, yes the Preston player flops but every player will do that, it’s daft from emakhu end of.

@Getonthelash2: I hope the defender is ok …which Hospital did they take him to do you know? I knew it was something serious the way he went straight down holding his head !

@WillIam87uk: Yes, got caught by trailing foot, was then kicked and kneed in the back, reacted, but think Brady feigned head collision.

@alexcw123: Summed up that refereeing performance yday. It’s a foul…. And then he is kicked which is why he reacts. Emakhu gets sent off and not one of there players even spoken too. Ref should not see another game for 4 weeks👍

@min7y: I think his clipped, the ref is looking at both of em and failed to see RB put his foot into AE and then the knee then goes down like that is embarrassing,
