Derby County’s Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has been arrested for allegedly ‘punching woman in face before taking her phone’.
The 32 year old reportedly appeared in court on Sunday following an incident which is said to have taken place in the early-hours a day earlier.
According to the respected Majorcan newspaper Ultima Hora, he allegedly punched the young woman in the face, left her with minor injuries, and also took her phone.

His wife was also arrested, accused of pulling the unnamed woman’s hair, held by police after the victim activated the geolocation device and informed the Civil Guard of the phone’s location, with Mendez-Laing and his wife arrested.
The mystery woman at the centre of this incident, described locally as a Brit, is said to have annoyed the Derby player and his wife by taking photos and videos of them without their consent inside an unnamed venue.
He is said to have approached her and hit out, according to sources close to the investigation.
Last Sunday morning, they were taken before the court on duty and were released after refusing to testify and paying a bail of 300 euros .
There has not yet been any official comment from the Civil Guard, as per reports by The Sun and the Daily Mail.
A club spokesperson said on Wednesday morning (3 July): “As this is an ongoing legal matter, the club will be making no comment until proceedings have been concluded.”
Mendez-Laing is trying to come back from previously setbacks, having tested positive for cocaine in 2019 and 2020, the latter leading to a three-month ban from football.
Cardiff released him in September 2020 for what the club termed an “alleged breach of contract”.
The ban was related to his personal use of the substance, unrelated to sporting performance.
In December 2019, he also tested positive for cocaine, provided an out-of-competition urine sample to Ukad officials, which found the presence of cocaine, resulting in a similar ban.
He was provisionally suspended on in February 2020, and charged with a breach of the FA’s social drugs policy on the 21st of April 2020 and received a three-month ban, but that was backdated and he was able to play again in May 2020.
Mendez-Laing’s second positive test came on the 4th of July 2020, following the game against Bristol City, admitting to taking cocaine at 10pm the night prior.
He served his second ban, signed for second tier club Middlesbrough and given a chance to reignite his career by Neil Warnock.
“With the help of my family, close friends, my agent, and the PFA (Professional Footballers’ Association) during this extremely difficult time, I have been able to overcome my personal hurdles, to focus, and invest my time in working hard, determined to return to football,” Mendez-Laing told the BBC in a statement.
“I appreciate all the support I have been given throughout. I now want to leave that period of my life in the past where it belongs.
“I’m excited about the future and delighted to be back doing what I love.”
