Morecambe board of directors give update on club’s situation with fans keeping hopeful

The Morecambe board of directors give an update on the club’s future with fans keeping hopeful once again as the new season looms.

Discussions regarding a potential takeover of the club are reportedly in an advanced stage on the evening of Morecambe’s gala dinner.

The Shrimps were put up for sale in September 2022 by the owner, Bond Group, but in that time, they’ve failed to pay their players on time twice, resulting in a 3 point deduction by the EFL, a financial struggle has put them in a precarious position, and after finishing 15th in League Two, Morecambe released 16 players at the end of the 2023-24 season with only a handful of first-team players staying and manager Ged Brannan left to become the assistant manager at Accrington Stanley.

Fans, players, staff and the board have all urged for a resolution or face a serious threat of expulsion or worse.

And Derek Adams has returned for a third stint as their manager, and faces quite the challenge, hopefully made easily should the takeover happen and the club are saved from the brink.

Last month, Jason Whittingham of Bond Group told Morecambe’s supporters’ body, the Shrimps Trust, that four credible buyers were interested in a potential acquisition then said via talkSPORT about a month ago, a formal announcement would be expected within the next 10-14 days.

Yet no such announcement came, leading to the Trust attempting to reach out to Whittingham for an update on the 19th of June.

They were told that an update would be provided following a board meeting on the 21st of June, but again, the Trust had to get in contact him three days later.

A subsequent response indicated that an update would be given on the 28th of June, a social media post from the Trust a day later revealed they received nothing.

The Trust said on the 3rd of July that Whittingham had finally responded to the statement of the 29th of June.

“In the interests of keeping fans as up to date as possible, the Shrimps Trust would like to provide another update on Jason Whittingham’s disappointing lack of promised information.

“47 minutes after the Trust’s previous statement on Saturday 29 June expressing concerns over Jason’s lack of update, Jason responded to the email sent five days prior on Monday 24 June.

“In his response. Jason advised that there had been developments which he would share on Monday 1 July once he had updated the board of directors. Jason then emailed two minutes later advising that this update would more likely be on Tuesday.

“At present, the Trust has received no update.

“While disappointing, this behaviour appears to be a recurring pattern from Jason, and does not speak favourably about his efforts to sell the club.

“The Trust has now emailed Jason again requesting a general update, as well as to enquire about meeting with potential suitors for the football club.”

Now, on the 6th of July, the board of directors have issued a statement, and it’s a positive one, however, it’s nothing that fans and the board haven’t heard before.

STATEMENT:

The Board of Directors wish to provide the following update.

This morning, we spoke to Bond Group who confirmed talks with a prospective owner are at an advanced stage, and submissions to the EFL planned for early next week.

Concurrently, manager Derek Adams and his team are working hard to build a competitive squad for the upcoming season.

We appreciate the patience of every single fan and friend of the Club, and will provide further updates as soon as it is possible to do so.

This is the Twitter reaction as the Morecambe board of directors give an update on the club’s situation with fans keeping hopeful…

@MorecambeFCFeed: Board: “Bond Group confirmed talks with a prospective owner are at an advanced stage, and submissions to the EFL planned for early next week.” Same Bond Group who told the Board there was an advanced deal in late 2022. Etc etc etc. I pray it’s something, but can’t get excited.

@LGBTShrimps: Talks supposedly in the ‘advanced stages’ with a prospective owner according to Bond Group and the Board, we’ll see whether it’s another one of his lies or not 🤞 #UTS 🦐 #JasonOut

@CassBen1: Good transparency and communication from the club – we need it. However, if Jason told me water is wet, I’d question it. His track record of truth telling is woeful. We’ve been in this position with Sarbjot and it sat here for over 12 months. Call me a cynic 🦐

@jettight19: Good to see somethings happening i hope your owner is out soon don’t like what’s happening to your club

@Hopey_Media: What a weekend!

@GazPar81: I want to be happy but Whittingham talks with a forked tongue. Good to have an update though.

@Bucko56789: Another false promise, cheers Jason

@slewpanova: Finally something 🫡

@missingleg: Hallelujah

@jayspray04: What a night

@bcks109: This is good to see. Hoping that the potential buyer is good for your club. #UTS

@OldProgger: So, basically, we have nothing to tell you.

@bay23110: Hopefully this actually happens and it’s not the boy who cries wolf
