Middlesbrough v Sunderland sees nine arrests made as violence breaks out and police officers attacked in Monday night’s Championship fixture.
The nine men, who were aged between 18 and 42, were charged and are now all due to appear at Teesside Magistrates Court on the 20th of September.
However, the police did wish to thank the large majority of fans who were well behaved at the Tees-Wear derby which saw Middlesbrough clinch a 1-0 victory at the Riverside Stadium.
POLICE STATEMENT:
Cleveland Police are thanking fans for their support and patience whilst dealing with pockets of disorder at the Middlesbrough FC and Sunderland AFC match on Monday 5th September.
The game saw pockets of disorder including coins and bottles being thrown at officers.
A total of nine arrests were made, and all nine men aged between 18 and 42 were charged and are due to appear at Teesside Magistrates Court on Tuesday 20th September.
Match Commander, Chief Inspector Darren Bainbridge, said: “We would like to thank the Middlesbrough and Sunderland fans who attended the fixture at the Riverside Stadium for their support and patience whilst we dealt with some incidents of disorder.
“We recognise that the vast majority of people attending the fixture were genuine fans who simply wanted to enjoy the game with their families and friends.
“There were, however, pockets of disorder which resulted in arrests and officers having to wear protective equipment. Further enquiries will now be carried out including reviewing footage and this may result in further action being taken.”
Anyone with information regarding disorder or criminality associated with football is asked to report to Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Middlesbrough ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a 76th minute winner from Australian 23-year-old Riley McGree. The three points means Chris Wilder’s men are now 17th in the league, with two wins from their first eight matches. Sunderland remain in eighth, two points outside the top six with eight games played.
Danny Gabbidon on MOTM Isaiah Jones: “He was involved in a key battle with Jack Clarke down the right-hand side and he did a fantastic job. In the first half, we saw the attacking side of his game; the second half he was asked to do things slightly differently with a fair bit of defending. It really was an all-action performance from him.”
Middlesbrough’s Chris Wilder: “I’m knackered after that, I think we all are! But we got there in the end.
“If you look at our eight performances so far, in terms of box-to-box, that was possibly not one of our best.
“Our objective today had to be a clean sheet and that gave us an opportunity to go and get that win.
“It was always going to be a tight game.
“I’ve had a couple of promotions myself and when you come up, you play with that fearless approach and nobody really expects you to do anything in the league above, so you have that freedom.
“We never really controlled any part of the game, but what we did control was the ball getting kept out of the back of the net.”
Sunderland’s Tony Mowbray: “I thought we had some brilliant opportunities – Pritchard had an amazing chance pretty early on – but I think you have to accept it’s a derby game that was end-to-end.
“We lost our talisman {Stewart) before kick-off and I think it knocked the stuffing out of us a little bit.
“I’m still learning about their characters and, at half-time, I talked about needing more personality on the pitch from some of the young players.
“We could easily have come away with something tonight, but it’s a derby game and when the main goal threat wasn’t on the pitch, that completely changed how we prepared.”

Middlesbrough v Sunderland sees nine arrests made as violence breaks out and police attacked, this is how fans reacted to it and more…
Jake Wheatley: No doubt banning orders be dished out for fans singing and shouting. Joke
Lewis Foster: Thoughts the police did brilliantly handling the crowd etc last night
Ollie Mainsgill: Shame about the coins and bottle being thrown like, but glad it wasn’t worse
Gary Oliver: Sounds like it was well handled and glad to see police praise the majority for good behaviour
Jason Lee: What dafuq was going on at the end lol
Paul Hailsham: Sounds like some people can’t handle their booze
@Jordw2118: Middlesbrough fans giving it the peodo shouts to the Sunderland fans. Sunderland fans return ‘your just a town full of tories’😭
Ste Caddy: If you’re 42 years old & you’re still causing trouble at football matches you really need to sort your life out
Russ Close: Did they arrest the ref.. was shocking.
Adam Daniels: was always bound to kick off in one way or another, lucky it wasn’t worse
Dave Charlton: Imagine being fully grown ‘adult’ and causing agro over a bunch of people kicking a ball about 🤷♂️ Absolute tools the lot of them
William Young: 8 of us banged up last time in the cup game a few year ago down there….all Sunderland. Be interesting to see if any of these were Boro fans this time.
Colin Hutton: I don’t want to comment specifically on what happened last night as people can be arrested wrongfully. But on a general note, anyone who seeks to intentionally cause trouble at a football game should be banned for life and hit with a hefty fine. Football is a game to be enjoyed by all, free from any sort of violence or aggravation! A much firmer approach is required!
