Ilkeston make ex-Derby, Nott’m Forest, Sheff Utd player their interim manager

Ilkeston Town make ex-Derby, Nott’m Forest, Sheff Utd, Chesterfield player Jamie Ward their interim manager as Martin Carruthers leaves.

Carruthers had his contract cancelled along with assistant Wayne Hallcro by mutual consent just months after guiding the club to the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands title.

Ilkeston are currently without a win in six games in the Southern Football League and the club has now turned to Ward who will be assisted by former Burton Albion, Cardiff City and Notts County centre-back Ben Turner.

They currently sit in the relegation zone of the Southern League – Premier Central with four points (all draws) from the opening six games.

CLUB STATEMENT:

The club can confirm that manager Martin Carruthers’ contract has been cancelled by mutual consent.

Carruthers took over as manager in November 2019 and guided us to promotion from NPL Division One Midlands as champions earlier this year.

Assistant manager Wayne Hallcro will also be leaving the club.

Chairman and owner Dave Hilton said: “I wish to thank Martin for his hard work and success at the club, a particular highlight being the league title win last season.

“I have huge amounts of respect for him as a person and a coach and I wish him the best of luck for the future. The same applies to Wayne to whom I also express my thanks.”

Current Ilkeston player Jamie Ward will take interim charge of the team, assisted by Ben Turner.

CARRUTHER’S STATEMENT:

Whilst mine and Wayne Halcro’s time at Ilkeston Football Club has come to an end, it is a period that I will always remember fondly and be proud of what we achieved during our time in charge.

First, I would like to thank the Dave, Andy and Cliffy for giving us the opportunity to lead the club and for their continued support throughout my tenure. The staff behind the scenes have been great and my support staff have worked extremely hard to help us achieve our goals as a huge success.

I will always remember what we, as a team, achieved together – reaching the 4th qualifying round of the FA cup in the live gave v Hartlepool on match of the day.

It has been a privilege to coach the players and they deserve so much credit for what we achieved. We have made so many friends and that means as much to us as our record of results and achievements.

Good luck to everyone and with the current team and players I expect them to now go on a run and fly up the table. Take care Gandi.
