Mansfield Town reportedly plot an audacious managerial appointment, a recently departed Championship manager to replace Graham Coughlan.
The 45 year old got axed by the Stags, who are yet to pick up a win, drawing five and losing four, which places them 22nd in the League Two table and just one point above the drop zone.
They also finished 21st last season with the final standings based on points-per-game due to the coronavirus pandemic preventing the campaign from continuing.

Coughlan saw his side lose 4-2 on Tuesday night, giving league newcomers Barrow their first win of the 2020/21 season.
He’s no longer in charge and now the club are looking at former Wigan manager Paul Cook to get the up the table and one day, securing that long awaited promotion to League One.
Cook is currently 9/1 on getting the job at Field Mill, but he’s also at 2/1 on getting the job at Salford City according to Sky Bet. He’s been out of work since the summer, having departed from Wigan Athletic who are in administration.
In August 2020, the Latic’s relegation to League One was confirmed due to the points deduction on the final day, despite a cracking run of form, subsequently saw the resignation of the manager.
Cook has previously managed Portsmouth, Chesterfield, Accrington, Sligo and Southport – winning the League One title with Wigan in 2017/18, the League Two title with Pompey in 2016/17 and with Chesterfield in 2013/14.
Paul Cook has outlined a desire to return to management in the Championship, however he admits he may have to find a club in the leagues below in order to get to the second tier again.
Cook told Sky Sports News: ‘I’ve had a managerial career now that’s seen me go from Accrinton to Chesterfield to Portsmouth to Wigan.
‘Like any manager feels, I feel you should leave a club in a better place than when you started.
‘I think I can look back in my time in management that I’ve done that at every club.
‘I’ve now been in the Championship for two years, and I would genuinely like the opportunity to manage a club that I feel can go into the Premier League.
‘For the English managers now, the opportunities to manage in the Premier League are very, very tough.
‘So to have the opportunity to take a team up is something I would love to try.
‘I’d love to be given the opportunity to do that, because you look at the clubs around you who are tyring to get in the Premier League.
‘One of the criticisms which comes from managers is they’ve never taken a team up (to the Premier League).
‘One of the debates managers would throw back to them is we’ve never had an opportunity.
‘Unless we’re given an opportunity no one will ever know.’
Although making it clear where his ambitions lie, Cook explained he felt there was a finite window where he could wait for a Championship job to come up.
He added: ‘At the minute I’m trying to break back into that type of situation.
‘As time goes on I miss football every day so much.
‘I miss the players, the dressing room, the breakfast banter, the speaking about football and talking about the match. I just miss football.
‘I love football that much that if I don’t get a job that I deem I might get in a period of time, I’ll take a football job anywhere, because I just want to be a football manager again.’

I hope we can pull it off if its true. It would be an ambitious appointment. Has won the League Two title twice. ?✅
Interesting to note that #Stags CEO David Sharpe appointed Paul Cook as manager when he was chairman at Wigan, so he knows him.https://t.co/MNxNwRCkXe
