Mansfield equal their all-time record league win from 1932 by thrashing Harrogate 9-2

Mansfield Town managed to equal their all-time record league win from 1932 by thrashing Harrogate Town 9-2 on Tuesday night.

Despite Harrogate’s impressive form of four wins and two draws in their previous six games, they were completely overwhelmed by Mansfield’s dominance, with the hosts now just a point behind League Two leaders Stockport.

Hiram Boateng’s outstanding performance saw him produce a hat-trick, making it the highest-scoring Football League game since 2011.

Furthermore, this was the first time that a team had managed to score nine in a Football League game since Peterborough beat Barnet 9-1 in Division Three in 1998.

Mansfield’s previous 9-2 victory came in only their second season in the EFL when they thrashed Rotherham United in Division Three (North) in December 1932, per BBC Sport.

Mansfield boss Nigel Clough said to BBC Radio Nottingham: “I thought it was an outstanding exhibition of hurting the opposition when you win the ball and then being clinical with the finish.

“To score nine is very special. It has been coming at times this season and it just all clicked tonight.

“We’ve done that to teams a few times here and just haven’t finished the moves off but we did that tonight and there were some very good goals.

“It comes off the training ground and we haven’t taken it onto the pitch all the time this season but we certainly did tonight.

“Hiram got the hat-trick and man of the match but I don’t know how you pick one – everyone played extremely well.”

STAGS: Pym, Bowery, Flint (McLaughlin 62), Brunt, Cargill, Reed (Maris HT), Boateng, Quinn (Lewis 62), Keillor-Dunn (Williams 79), Akins, Nichols (Swan HT). SUBS NOT USED: Flinders, Clarke.

HARROGATE: Belshaw, Abu (Burrell 53), Thomson, Cornelius, Odoh (Sivi 62), Daly (Bloxham 62), O’Connor, Muldoon (March 53), Dooley (Sutton 53), Foulds, Gibson. SUBS NOT USED: Mitchell, Falkingham.

REFEREE: Scott Oldham.

Shellshocked Harrogate boss Simon Weaver, who is the longest serving boss in English football and manager of the month Simon Weaver, said per chad.co.uk: “It was an incredible scoreline for Mansfield and, fair play to them, I thought they were brilliant in all aspects. We were well beaten by the better team.

“But in spite of that we have everything to go for still if we have a positive attitude.

“Obviously we have been well-beaten by a very strong team in the worst form of ourselves on the ball. It was a hard night.

“We gift-wrapped several goals and lacked intensity. That was the element that hurts a bit.

“I am not going to batter them as the lads have been absolutely magnificent for the football club for several months.

“We have been hard to beat all season, we’ve been entertaining, we’ve been everything that we want to see from a Harrogate Town team. But tonight we weren’t.

“So we have to treat it as a one-off and move on quickly. But we also have to learn from the harsh lessons that were dealt by a really strong Mansfield team tonight.

“We didn’t lay a glove on them which is not a characteristic of ours over the years. Maybe we’ve got ahead of ourselves for a few days and need to learn from that.

“We mustn’t suddenly rip up the way we’ve been playing. We have been good in all aspects.

“But we have to step it up again to compete with the likes of Mansfield.

“We are close to the play-offs and quite deservedly so after 30 games.

“We have to be that team that are really good at bouncing now.

“We’ve done it before and we will do it again through being strong-minded and an ability to dust ourselves off.”

@CharlieDale09: You’d be gutted as a fan not to get 10. 20mins to get it, too. Teams always choke on 9, unbelievable! Incredible team mind 🤝
