Jaden Philogene nutmegs defender, drops another, and scores with rabona in Hull’s win at Rotherham

Jaden Philogene nutmegs a defender, drops another, and scores with a rabona goal in Hull’s 2-1 win at Rotherham on Tuesday night.

Jaden Philogene-Bidace’s rabona effort was diverted into his own goal by Millers defender Cameron Humphreys-Grant, but that hasn’t stopped wowing fans watching on in the stands or on their devices.

Hull came from behind to boost their Championship playoff hopes, while for Rotherham, they find themselves in a dire situation, 12 points from safety and without a win since Boxing Day.

Christ Tiehi initially gave hope for Rotherham with an early goal, but Jaden Philogene’s incredible rabona finish and Noah Ohio’s subsequent winner quickly turned it in Hull’s favour.

The win sees Hull back into contention for a top-six finish, and now they must focus on maintaining consistency.

Rotherham started the match strongly, taking the lead within five minutes through Tiehi’s well-placed half-volley.

This came as a surprise to many, but despite Rotherham’s early dominance, Hull gradually settled into the game and created several chances.

Rotherham’s goalkeeper, Viktor Johansson, produced a number of impressive saves to keep their half time lead, denying Billy Sharp and Jacob Greaves on multiple occasions.

In the second half, Rotherham continued to push forward in search of a second goal to ease their nerves.

However, efforts from Nombe and Rathbone couldn’t get the much needed equaliser for Rotherham.

Rotherham United (5-4-1): Johansson; Kioso, Odoffin, Humphreys (Appiah 81), Peltier (Morrison 67), Revan; Rathbone (c) (Cafu 81), Tiehi (Rinomhota 74), Clucas, Nombe; Wyke (Eaves 74)

Substitutes not used: Phillips (GK); Hugill, Lindsay, Seriki

Manager: Leam Richardson

Hull City (4-2-3-1): Allsop; Coyle (c), Jones, Greaves, Giles; Slater (Tufan 67), Morton; Carvalho (Jacob 83), Philogene, Zaroury (Ohio 67); Sharp (Docherty 83)

Substitutes not used: Pandur (GK); McLoughlin, Traore, Connolly, Omur

Manager: Liam Rosenior

Referee: Leigh Doughty

Hull City boss Liam Rosenior on Jaden Philogene’s goal: “It was ridiculous. His ability is something we’ve missed and I think he will only get better. He’s got a real belief he can be a top player.”

Rotherham’s Leam Richardson: “Congratulations to Hull, they are having a good season and invested really well in the summer and the January window.

“We wanted to start with a real strong intent, to be in the ascendency and we did that.

“We had a mad five or 10 minutes, I thought we missed a big chance with 1-0 with Sam (Nombe) and they went down the other end and scored.

“Disappointed to concede the way we did. I will never criticise lads for honest mistakes on the pitch but obviously we have to stop making them.

“The Championship is as strong as it has been for 20 years and walking into this situation and this football club I was very aware of it, I could have shied away from it. It’s not in my make up.

“I know where this club wants to be and at the end of the season and next season, what we want to sustain.

“Things have got to be put into place to do that moving forward and certainly leaders of the club are aware of it and we will try our best to make positive decisions.”

Hull’s Liam Rosenior: “We should give him the goal, we need to appeal to the FA for the outrageous piece of skill.

“He is trying to beg it in the dressing room that it’s his goal. I said to him that at least it’s an assist. That is Jaden’s goal, it’s what we pay money for.

“Ridiculous, it’s ridiculous, his ability is something we have missed for a long time. He is only going to get better the more games he plays.

“It is not just his goal or the showreel moments, it is his energy levels for the team, he has a real belief, he can be a top player but the reason he can be a top player is because he works so hard on his game.

“We have to get him off the training pitch because he wants to do extra.”
