Man Utd are aiming to build a 100,000-seater stadium as more plans emerge, claiming it could cost £2bn and take six years to complete.
Manchester United’s preference, as indicated by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is to construct a new stadium on adjacent land to the current Old Trafford, allowing the team to continue playing there during construction.
The final decision on whether to proceed with the new build or renovate the existing stadium is expected by the end of the year, following full consultation with supporters.
The proposed new stadium aims to future-proof the club’s capacity needs and enhance its financial and brand standing, drawing inspiration from modern stadium designs globally.

🏟️ United are drawing inspiration from Los Angeles’ SoFi arena, where they played Arsenal on Saturday#TelegraphFootball | #MUFC

The Telegraph report the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, which is chaired by Lord Coe and and includes the likes of Gary Neville and Andy Burnham, are trying to make significant progress since its establishment in March.
Various subgroups have been formed to engage with fans and the community, with a final recommendation expected by December 2024.
It seems the proposed development could see a “stadium district” including a hotel, amenities, and an entertainment centre similar to the Cosm in Los Angeles.
They are taking inspiration from the Hollywood Park complex in Los Angeles, with officials at Man Utd plotting a positive regeneration in the whole Old Trafford area of Manchester.
Chief Operating Officer Collette Roche has been actively involved in studying the LA model through a number of visits and meetings with key stakeholders. She’s also looked at the new redevelopment at the Bernabeu, the new Burnham Park project for NFL team Chicago Bears, and also spent time with the brains behind the new Tottenham stadium and Wembley
Inglewood mayor James T Butts Jr spoke with the Telegraph, saying that Hollywood Park, which also has 6,000 capacity YouTube Theatre beside to the stadium, is the “pre-eminent sports venue in the world”. The stadium alone costs around £2.3bn.
Ex-Man Utd player Andy Cole was in attendance at the SoFi which hosted Man Utd’s pre-season defeat to Arsenal. He said: “What left the biggest impression on me is how the stadium has been central to the rise of Inglewood.
“I have been coming to LA for years and that area of the city was never previously somewhere you would choose to go as a visitor.
“To see how it has become such a thriving neighbourhood, with the SoFi at the heart of it, is an inspirational example of inner-city regeneration.
“I don’t draw this comparison lightly but you can see a parallel with the opportunity back home in Manchester.
“A new or redeveloped stadium at Old Trafford could be the focal point for revitalisation of the surrounding area.

“Manchester United fans and everyone in the north of England deserves a truly world-class stadium, and SoFi set the standard to aim for. This is the kind of arena the best players in the world want to be playing in and fans want to be experiencing.”
By redeveloping Old Trafford, it’s estimated to cost between £1bn and £1.2bn – around half the cost of a new build, but it could take longer to build and there are complexities with renovating a 1910 building.
But it would also see a reduced capacity and a major hit to matchday revenues, so even more reason to build a new stadium beside it.
And don’t worry, the stadium task force are making sure they will take in heritage, history and “essence” of the club for their new home.

This is what fans are saying with Man Utd aiming to build a 100,000-seater stadium as more plans emerge…
@UTDgeezer: New stadium on the same plot of land where we have old trafford. its the way forward. Just this summer Madrid has generated over €70m just for stadium use. that should be the aim , in order to stay the biggest football club and brand , we need to be at the forefront.
@Utdledgey: New stadium has to be the way forward.
@WILKO_MUFC: I think this is 100% the correct direction to be moving in!! OT will always be beautiful to us and very special but if we keep the current ground we will be moving backwards. OT has served its purpose spectacularly. It’s time for a new build!!
@PaulKan00321136: Season ticket prices will go through the roof if this happens. Be careful what you wish for.
@DesireMUFC: Sounds good to me. Hopefully INEOS will fund some the build rather than more debt. 6 years is quite a long time.
@mseymour84: A brand new stadium is a no brainer. Old Trafford isn’t the same Old Trafford it was 30/40/50 years ago anyway. Literally everything has changed, the only original feature is the old tunnel. If we want to bring in the most revenue to be able to compete at the highest level again, then we need the revenue that a new stadium with a higher capacity and better facilities would bring. We have to move with the times.
@laayver_Matt91: Genuinely think we should build a new stadium , was against it at first but times move on and a 100k stadium would be unreal
@beardedfc_: The new stadium should be named “Theatre of Dreams”
@banzaimike1985: Build a new stadium for the Men, overhaul the existing stadium, take the top tier off and give it to the women’s/youth teams, have the newly proposed rail/tram connections, build the new club themed shopping outlets also. The area is known as Old Trafford anyway ❤️
@jim1982: Progress is about moving forward. I’ll be sad to leave the current Old Trafford but excited to see what the new Old Trafford will look like. #oldtrafford
@liamkenwright91: Will be devastating to see OT knocked down but the club will be around for hundreds of years after us all and if that’s the best decision for the future of the club then so be it. Just make it the best stadium in the world.
@UnitedUnited58: 🤔 interesting, I’d imagine #INEOS only want the best for the stadium and to do this a new stadium is the viable option. Interesting times ahead. #NEWTRAFFORD? 👀
@JacamoRed: Those league cup games at home to league 2 fodder on a wet Tuesday night are going to hit different in a ground with a 100k capacity.
@UnitedPeoplesTV: Huge news this. Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear from the start that a new stadium is what he sees as best. Old Trafford used to be the biggest and best, building a new 100,000 seater stadium would re-establish that. Lots of detail in the report about ensuring anything new would link to what Old Trafford is and means.
