Club football is in full swing and we have a pre-season friendlies review look at how the Premier League sides are getting on.
Players are starting to get back in shape for the beginning of the new campaign. Depending on the club, they head to places with better climatic conditions than at home to ease the players in, or to places with harsher climates so the players could hit the ground running when the season kicks in.
It also gives managers the opportunity to blend new players into the team, try out different tactics or help players adapt to a new manager and his techniques.
Commercial aspects for top flight sides can be the main reason for the tours. The team is in a place where they want to increase the fanbase, regardless of the climate and/or conditions and made to play high-profile friendlies which are of absolutely no use, as the only purpose they fulfil is filling the stadiums. Despite the torrential rain, bad condition of the pitch, efforts were made till the last minute to make sure the match happened.
Right, time to take a look at the Premier League pre-season friendlies review…
28 July – West Ham 1-3 Wolves
Wolves | Bentley, Doherty (Lima 63), Mosquera (Dawson 63), Toti (S Bueno 73), Ait-Nouri (H Bueno 63), Lemina (Bellegarde 63), Cundle (Doyle 63), Sarabia (Guedes 63), Chiquinho (R Gomes 63), Cunha (Hwang 30)(Rawlings 78), Strand Larsen (Chirewa 63).
West Ham | Fabianski (Foderingham 64), Coufal (Kodua 45)(Casey 81), Aguerd (Earthy 76), Mavropanos (Zouma 45), Cresswell (Kilman 45), Soucek (Orford 45), Ward-Prowse (Irving 64), Potts (Emerson 45), Kudus (Marshall 64), Ings (Guilherme 45), Cornet (Antonio 64).
Wolves boss Gary O’Neil said: On a positive performance and result: “It was a good evening. The performance was excellent, I thought we were dominant, good with the ball, good without the ball. The centre backs did well in the four, moving away from the five we were a lot last year. We coped well, so pleased. A good outing for us. I said to the players that I’m really proud because they’ve worked so hard for three weeks and to see it come together this evening was pleasant.
“We’ve worked hard, so to see a lot of it come out was pleasing. Of course, there are false positives in there because West Ham won’t have prepared it like a real game and won’t have seen us like that before. It’ll be much tougher than that once teams know what we’re doing, but a great start point.”
West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui: “Unfortunately it happened today, but in the end we could play. We had to wait, but it was not only for us, but for Wolves too and in the end the most important thing was that we played 90 minutes more.
“It was a big demand of course, and we are aware that we have to work very hard in the next three weeks to be ready for the start of the Premier League and OK, let’s see.
“Today, Wolves were better and they deserved to win. We have to do a lot of things but despite the fact we have a lot of new players and a lot of Academy players, it is not an excuse.
“I think that we have to improve in a lot of things with and without the ball, so we have a lot of work to do in front of us.
“We have to do a lot better and a lot of much better things to win the matches, so that’s why I told the players the demands will be higher and we have to try to translate this in the next three weeks.
“We have to analyse this match with calmness, but always knowing that sometimes this is not a bad thing that this happens in the pre-season, because I want us to know more about our needs, and for us to know we have to align and work together for the first match in the Premier League that is more or less in three weeks.”

“We’re in pre-season and we played against a team who were very focused and played very well,” Villa boss Unai Emery said. “And they pressed us in some moments.
“Even when we were playing in control of the game and creating chances, their transition was good and they deserved to win.
“But we are working now for our structure again, trying to get better with the players we add in this season.
“And with the tactical work, mixing players, we are doing it.
“Of course, the result is not good but, for us, now the result is not the most important.
“Most important is to build a team, get information about the players and this was the first match for some players, and they played well. Even losing, they played well.
“Onana and Maatsen, Dobbin, the goal scored by Archer was important as well.
“I am happy with the work we are doing. Of course, we want to be competitive, even in pre-season and not concede a result like this.”
