Macclesfield 2-1 Crystal Palace: Glasner gets critical while Guehi speaks with angry away end

Oliver Glasner gets critical while Marc Guehi speaks with angry fans in the away end after Macclesfield beat Crystal Palace 2-1.

In one of the greatest FA Cup upsets in history, Macclesfield FC of the National League North stunned Premier League side and defending champions Crystal Palace with a 2-1 victory in the third round.

Goals from captain Paul Dawson and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts gave the Silkmen a deserved lead and held on after Palace got one back through Yéremy Pino in the 90th minute.

This is the biggest shock in the tournament’s history in terms of league positions, with there 117 places between both clubs.

It is also the first time FA Cup holders have been eliminated by non-league opposition since 1909 ironically, Palace knocking out Wolves back then.

Guéhi said after the defeat, per the club website: “Credit to Macclesfield, credit to their club, and to their players for how well they played, their level of intensity – congratulations to them.

“I’m just going to give absolute praise to Macclesfield – for their fans, and for the way they played. It’s obviously an incredible story for them. Congratulations to them, and I wish them well in the competition.

“Today, we didn’t approach the game in the way we would have hoped, but credit to Macclesfield. They were the better team, they wanted it more, they were more aggressive.

“We won it last year, and again, if we’re being honest, miracles can happen, and another miracle happened today.

“It’s the FA Cup. It’s kind of what the competition’s about, I guess.”

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner speaking to BBC Sport“We give congratulations to Macclesfield for winning.

“We had no kind of quality today and I saw no one who could win a dribble. Then conceding set goals and timing in the header.

“If you can’t create clear chances, it is a lack of quality that we have shown today. We deserved to lose.”

On his hopes after making changes at half-time: “Quality. From everyone. Honestly, I have no explanation for what I have seen today and we can find excuses but you don’t need tactics and a manager for these games.

“So I think if you just show what you are capable of and show pride then you perform in a different way.”

Glasner told Palace TV: “It’s embarrassing. I’ve no explanation for what I’ve seen today. No excuse. It’s really crazy, after experiencing the win in the FA Cup [last season] and now losing here.

“But congratulations to Macclesfield.

“I’m sorry we couldn’t give them anything back today. At the end [full-time], the pitch was full of fans and people. Everybody just went into the dressing room.

“Everybody is disappointed. Players are frustrated. We didn’t show up. We’re sorry for that. I hope you can understand it.

“You, the fans and we all, are really disappointed.

“We will make a few changes and we will start again next week. Thanks for your support.”

Speaking to talkSPORT, Glasner was asked about what he said to his players in the dressing room at full time: “Not a lot. I think when you play here against a non-league team, I think you don’t need tactics, I think you don’t need a manager, honestly.

“I was 19 years as a player so I know this and that things can happen, but the way we played, their goalkeeper could be man of the match, and unlucky situations, but it wasn’t.

“So that is what disappoints me most and this is what we have to change, we’ve seen this in the last weeks as well.

“We conceded another set-play goal, so all the things, losing a header because we have no timing and the attack, it’s no physicality, no pace, no dribbling, and then it’s tough against any team.

“But, on the other side, I think our U21s would have done better than we have done today. Therefore, things have to be changed.”

On his concerns: “When you ask me straight after this game, yes, massively,” he said when asked if he is worried for the rest of the season.

“On the other side, I know the team and I know we need players back.

“Looks like players who get the chance can’t take it, maybe are not good enough, and it means we need all the others back because I’ve seen, a few weeks ago, a different team playing better.

“We can see if we have five, six new players in the squad like we had today, didn’t train the last month, then we have no structure and the individual quality is not good enough to win.”

Glasner told TNT Sports: “I think we’re not able to create chances.

“We have no player who can win a one against one, we have no player who is quick enough to run past somebody, we have no physical strength in our attack, we didn’t create anything and we have no presence in the box.

“We tried to make three changes, play more attacking, and obviously, the second goal is slapstick.

“We tried everything, but I have no explanation and everything I try to explain [about] this performance would be wrong, because I think our Under-21 team would do better than we did today.”

Here’s the social media reaction as Oliver Glasner gets critical while Marc Guehi speaks with angry fans in the away end after Macclesfield beat Crystal Palace 2-1…

@CraigDHoare: A perfect example of ego of players thinking they can just turn up and their quality is enough to win them the game.. completely outfought from start to finish

@Sumo08112: He’s right cause we got worse when he took them off

@dan_ofthesouth: To be fair they probably have more patterns than the first team

@AyewAlrightMate: He’s said he’ll make some changes for the past 4 weeks and literally nothing has changed 😂

@EagleTweets2: Not disappointed, furious. There really is no excuse, to be paid the amount of money they’re on collectively and to produce a performance like that is unacceptable. If I did that at my job I’d be sacked on the spot #CPFC

@_GeorgeCPFC_: I really don’t like when teams come out and apologise like this, feels fake, the way to truly say your sorry is to give your full 110% on the pitch, not 20% on and an apology after, really felt half arsed today and that attitude must change

@cpfc_taylor: No one on that pitch played like they gave a fuck today it was shameful all should be docked wages and should apologies to us all and refund the fans that travelled to the match #CPFC

@CPFC_1988: Strange comment as he hauled the two u21s off at half time.

@TCPalacePod: The last month has been an unmitigated disaster, but the seeds were sown in the summer. Our best players are either injured, unavailable or mentally/physically drained and our squad players simply aren’t good enough. Oh and the manager’s future needs to be sorted ASAP! 🤷‍♂️ #CPFC

@SurreyEagle25: Glasner has to take some blame. Played weeks sides in the UECL and it didn’t work out and cost us top 8. Same today and has made us a laughing stock. Should always start strong and then sub players off when game is won! #cpfc

@JG_CPFC: Handful of players and a manager all with 1 foot out the door. If you wanted a wake up call that there’s 0 commitment left in this squad that’s it in fucking black and white. None of them deserve to be here #CPFC
