Leeds player crashes Land Rover into police car outside Elland Road hours before Norwich game

Leeds United player Charlie Cresswell crashes his Land Rover into a police car outside Elland Road hours before the Norwich playoff game.

The 21 year old defender was in a car accident with a police vehicle earlier today, but fortunately, he emerged unscathed and is still eligible to play in tonight’s Championship playoff semi final second leg against Norwich City.

As the incident occurred at approximately 10am on Thursday morning, the England Under-21 player had been en route to Elland Road near the West Stand entry gate.

Although a police officer received treatment for minor injuries, Leeds United has confirmed that the collision was of minor nature and Cresswell himself suffered no injuries. Notably, both vehicles sustained considerable damage.

Police state that their enquiries into the incident are ongoing. A spokesperson said: “At 10.13am today (Thursday), police were notified of a collision involving a police car and a Land Rover Defender on Elland Road, Leeds. An officer received medical treatment for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. Enquiries are ongoing.”

The Leeds players park their vehicles behind Elland Road’s West Stand on matchdays, before spending the day at the team hotel for their final pre-match meetings

Eyewitness saw Charlie Cresswell driving the £60,000 4×4 when the incident took place, with debris left scattered across the road outside the West Stand.

Preston-born Cresswell has been a regular substitute for Daniel Falke’s side but has found minutes on the pitch hard to come by.

The crash comes on the same week police assured fans travelling to Leeds for the playoff clash that they will be kept safe after trouble flared following Sunday’s first leg.

A Leeds fan in his 60s was left bloodied after an object cut his chin after the 0-0 draw in the semi final opener at Carrow Road.

The incident had some supporters concerned about repercussions at Elland Road.

It is hoped matters have calmed this after swift police action saw two men in their late teens arrested and a 50-year-old charged with assault and possession of class A drugs.

A West Yorkshire police spokesman said: “As for all matches at Elland Road there will be a suitable policing operation in place, for Thursday’s game, to ensure all those attending are able to have a safe and enjoyable time.”

But in a statement released by Leeds, it confirmed there would be an increased presence will be at the game for the second leg.

It said: “The safety and security of both home and away supporters attending the match at Elland Road is of paramount importance.

“We know tensions will be heightened given what is at stake in the match, but we ask all supporters to think about their actions and any potential consequences.

“In the interests of safety, there will be an increased police presence at Elland Road on Thursday evening.”

A Norwich City spokesman confirmed the club are coordinating with police as usual ahead of a match.

In a statement after Sunday’s game, Leeds said that the club “condemn any violence at football matches”.

Robin Sainty, chairman of the Canaries Trust, said: “People have been concerned about going up to Leeds in case of any reprisals.

“We’ve had conversations with our opposite numbers at the Leeds Trust who have been really helpful.

“They’ve been keeping an eye on the atmosphere there to see if there was any great escalation but it seems pretty quiet, which is good news.”

A man in his late teens was arrested on Monday night on suspicion of assault and affray and released on bail until the 13th of August.

Another male, in his late teens, had been arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault GBH and a public order offence and bailed until the 13th of July.

Graham Riches, 50, of Dyer Close, Horsford, was charged with assault on an emergency worker, common assault and possession of Class A drugs. He will appear at Norwich Magistrates Court on the 7th of June.
