Leeds fan covered in blood after being ‘slashed’ following match at Norwich

A Leeds United fan was left covered in blood after allegedly being ‘slashed’ following his side’s match at Norwich City on Sunday.

@FBAwayDays said: “It’s being reported that a Leeds United fan has been slashed at Norwich this afternoon. 😨 Absolutely disgusting to see that going to the football isn’t a safe environment. 2 men have been arrested.”

@DorsetHottub tweeted along with a photo: “We came out of Carrow Road after the game to Chants of Turks with knives and Galatasaray.. whilst asking the lads why it was said my dad was slashed in the neck with a blade and hit by a full can… @LUFC if anyone knows anything please speak up #lufc #ncfc.

Adam Pope @apopey said: “I understand there was an incident after the game at Carrow Road where a Leeds United fan has received an injury to the neck that has bled. Not confirmed what caused the injury, possibly a can that has been thrown/used. One Norwich fan has been arrested. #LUFC”

Taking to Twitter, another user, @SeniorGareth, who claims to known the victim “for many years”, countered those suggesting that the man had provoked the attack.

“Just spoken to the lad who was attacked outside. Known him many years. Absolutely not a fighter,” he posted on the social media platform.

“Asked the ones singing re Istanbul to show respect and he’s now lucky to be alive. He’s shook up #lufc”

Norwich confirmed that two arrests have been made, adding that they are working with the police to identify those involved and investigate what happened.

POLICE STATEMENT:

Two men have been arrested following an incident in Norwich this afternoon (Sunday 12 May 2024).

The incident happened shortly after 2pm today (Sunday 12 May 2024) when a man aged in his 60s reported being punched outside Norwich City FC’s stadium in Carrow Road. An object is also believed to have been thrown at the victim who suffered a cut to his chin.

The victim was seen by paramedics at the scene and did not require further medical treatment.

A man aged in his late teens was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault GBH and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

A man aged in 50s was also arrested at the scene on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Both men remain in custody.

Officers believe another man was also involved in this afternoon’s incident and enquiries are ongoing to locate him.

An investigation has been launched to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

Graham Riches, 50, of Dyer Close, Horsford, Norwich, was arrested and charged for assault on an emergency worker, common assault and possession of Class A drugs.  He has been bailed to appear at Norwich Magistrates’ Court on 7 June 2024.

Meanwhile, the Championship playoff semi-final first leg between Norwich City and Leeds United at Carrow Road finished goalless.

Wilfried Gnonto saw calls of a first-half penalty waved away while, Junior Firpo had a goal ruled out for offside; and Josh Sargent, Gabriel Sara missed good chances.
