Jamie Vardy speaks on taunting Tottenham fans, drinking Red Bull, scoring and spat with Romero

Jamie Vardy speaks on his cheeky taunting towards Tottenham fans, drinking Red Bull at half time, scoring and his spat with Cristian Romero.

The sh*thouse 37 year old wasted no time in riling up his opponents upon his and Leicester’s return to the Premier League on Monday night.

He got on the scoresheet with a surprise equaliser in the 57th minute for the Foxes, who managed to hold on to prevent Spurs from winning.

Pedro Porro had earlier put the visitors in front while £65m summer signing Dominic Solanke missed a number of chances.

Then Vardy came on and netted, shortly after he was seen in the tunnel at half time, consuming a can of Red Bull.

Vardy reminder Tottenham that he’s a Premier League title to his name, while Tottenham has yet to win one.

And as he was subbed off in the 79th minute for Stephy Mavididi, Cristian Romero expressed his discontent with Vardy, prompted the ex-England international to explicitly instruct the Argentine defender to ‘f*** off’.

Vardy on Sky Sports: “We just had a little chat between ourselves at half-time. Tottenham are a really good team but we have them too much respect and we started getting after them and it changed the momentum.

“We said when it got to 40 minutes make sure you go in not conceding any more. We’ll take the point and move on now.”

On his fitness: “I was as fit as a fiddle until I got to about 65 minutes, if I’m honest!

“I wouldn’t say I am doing anything differently playing-wise. Probably adapted a bit by dropping in but I think the main thing is I am looking after myself recovery-wise to the maximum.”

Speaking about his age and the longevity he has in the Premier League: “I see it as just a number. As long as I keep looking after myself and my legs keep feeling great, then I will carry on for as long as is physically possible.”

On his jokes with the Tottenham fans when he went off: “You take a bit of stick during the game. As long as they can take it when I give it back then it’s all good.”

On Leicester’s Premier League ambitions: “At the end of the day you have 11 players to start and on any given day, anyone can beat anyone. We know that when we are at the top of our game we can give anyone a run for their money.”

As for his own future in football, he added: “I see it as just a number [age]. As long as my legs still feel great, then I’ll carry on.”

Neville said: “I loved him when he first came into the Premier League, the idea of this non-League mentality player, he was a throwback.

“I did think though he’d be a player who relied completely on his pace, running off the shoulder and counter-attacking. And when he lost his pace, lost a yard, he’d find it difficult to adapt his game, as many others have.

“But he’s still going at 37. He’s still got that burst, that yard. He looks so fit and looks like he hasn’t put a pound on.

“Usually the bones start to creak a little bit, training becomes a lot more difficult, getting out there and keeping that weight off. Well done to him, and well done to Steve Cooper for taking a chance on playing him.”

Carragher added: “I would imagine he’s Leicester’s greatest-ever player. He’s got to be very close, when you think about what he’s achieved and where he’s come from. He’s a special footballer.”

“We didn’t have a striker,” Cooper told Sky Sports ahead of the game. “He said he feels good, he was a little bit uncomfortable that we didn’t have a fit striker and he made himself available.

“You have to trust his judgement.”

Cooper after the match: “It was a straightforward decision. Three days ago we were without an experienced striker. He just showed so much desire to play. Had it been on Saturday he probably wouldn’t have played but luckily it wasn’t. He did what he does.

“It was a really good goal. We know if we can get decent balls into the box we have the guy who can find some space. He got injured a month ago, has trained once really and he goes and does that.

“We probably could not have played the whole game like we did the second half because people are still getting fit and it was a lot of guys first 90 minutes but we needed to show more ambition than the first half. It wasn’t quite meant to be like that to be honest and that was on me.

“The boys responded and we were really good in the second half. I felt like another goal was coming but we lost some momentum with the injury, which of course. It was good to get the first point and maybe we got some nerves and anxiety out of the way.

“To play like we did in the second half will be brilliant for belief.

“We are definitely intending to and we want to sign some more attacking players. We hope we are close to. It’s great Oliver Skipp is over the line but there are a few in process.

“We just hope we can have a bit more luck and fortune to get some more over the line before Fulham, if not before the window closes. We need to do that as well.”

Cooper speaking to BBC Sport: “Pleased with the second half and it is a decent result against a team who will be vying up at the top. With the level of the team, amount of investment and experience we knew they’d be a really tough opponent.

“The first-half wasn’t how we wanted it to be. We played with more ambition and aggression in the second half and it showed the impact it can have in the game because we were good for the equaliser and second goal but it didn’t quite come.”

On Jamie Vardy: “If the game had been on Sunday or Saturday, I’m not sure he’d have played. He’s been out since the second week of pre-season but it just wasn’t sitting right for him that we’d go into this game without any available experienced striker. He came to see me a couple of days ago and said, ‘I’ll be fit, I’ll play and am available’, so we played him.

“If we get enough good service around an opponent’s box we have the guy to find space get on the end of the right chances. He’s not going to learn that from me, he’s been doing it for decades. It’s about keeping him as fresh as we can.”

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou speaking to Sky Sports: “Disappointing night for us. First-half excellent and controlled the game but wasteful in front of goal. Second half was the same. we started off well and once Leicester scored, the crowd lifted and we lost our composure.

“It was an issue we had last year as well, we need to keep working hard and be a bit more ruthless in front of goal. At times we made poor decisions. When we are that dominant we should be out of sight.

“We do everything to score goals and we didn’t score. The dominance is great but if you don’t score it is meaningless. We have to be stronger in our mindset in the front third. To be that wasteful tonight is disappointing. We just weren’t clinical.

“They were all [the debutants] okay. It’s not our football or effort. To get results you need to be a lot more ruthless in the final third. If we don’t we won’t get the rewards our football should get.The responsibility is on me. That’s why you coach.”
