Some Leeds fans took to moan and claim Brighton stitched up Georginio Rutter with a video they posted announcing him as their new signing.
We’ve even seen Leeds fans express discontent towards Georginio Rutter, alleging a lack of professionalism while others defended him saying that he wouldn’t know about the tweet from 10 years ago.
Late on Monday night, Brighton confirmed the signing after triggering a release clause included in his contract at Elland Road.
This transfer marks the conclusion of Rutter’s two-year spell with Leeds, but as mentioned, it’s the announcement of Rutter’s transfer by Brighton which caused some discontent.
The Seagulls featured Rutter in a video behind a laptop screen on Twitter, where he subsequently tweeted, “Don’t go to bed just yet…,” accompanied by a smiley emoji.
This is a tweet that Leeds put out back in 2014, as their fans anticipated further incoming, only for Leeds to revealed that strikers Matt Smith and Dominic Poleon had moved to Fulham and Oldham.
They concluded with a tweet stating, “After a busy last hour that is us done for the 2014 Summer Transfer Window #DeadlineDay #lufc.”

CLUB STATEMENT:
We are delighted to confirm the signing of Georginio Rutter from Leeds United.
The Frenchman has signed a contract that runs until June 2029, subject to work permit.
Men’s first-team head coach Fabian Hurzeler said, “Georginio is a player who has the capabilities to get fans off their seats and really showed what he can do in English football with Leeds last season — but I have known about him since he played in Germany for Hoffenheim.
“Now we have to integrate him into the team. We’re looking forward to working with him.”
Technical director David Weir said, “Georginio is a player we have been looking at for a while. He’s a strong technical player and one we are excited to bring to the club. We look forward to seeing him continue to develop with us.”
The 22-year-old came through the youth ranks with Stade Rennais, making his debut in September 2020 in a 3-0 win over Saint-Etienne.
He left for TSG Hoffenheim in February 2021 where he would make 64 appearances, scoring 11 goals.
Georginio spent two years in Germany before Leeds United made him their record signing in January 2023.
He made 11 appearances for the Whites that season as they were relegated from the Premier League. He was a mainstay in Daniel Farke’s team during the 2023/24 campaign though, making 51 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and notching 16 assists.
He has represented France from under-15 up to under-21 level, making his debut for the under-21s in March 2022.

LEEDS STATEMENT:
Leeds United can confirm Georginio Rutter has joined Brighton & Hove Albion in a permanent transfer, after the Premier League side activated an exit clause in his contract.
The 22-year-old forward joined the Whites in January 2023 from Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim for a club record fee.
Every effort was made to keep Georginio at Elland Road despite his exit clause being activated, but he was persistent and adamant in his desire to leave and we respect his decision.
Georginio now departs Leeds United having made a total of 66 appearances, scoring eight goals over an 18-month spell.
We would like to place on record our thanks to Georgie for his efforts both on and off the pitch, along with his exemplary attitude and professionalism during his time at the club.
We wish him all the very best for the future.

“From day one, you, the fans, have always been there, cheering me on and showing me what it means to play for Leeds. You made me feel at home.. and I will always remember that.
“My time here was full of hard work,. great moments. and strong friendships. I’m leaving as a better player and a better person,. and I’m really thankful for that.

@andrew_nalty: georgi man dont do that
@lewis__lufc: You absolute bastards
@_billylufc: Don’t give him shit for this, Brighton have stitched him up. Do you genuinely think a 22 year old French bloke knows about a Leeds tweet from 2014? #lufc

@RoderickEasdale: Georginio Rutter typing “Don’t go to bed just yet” in that welcome video by Brighton is plain weird. Doubt Brighton fans will get the reference; but Leeds ones will and find it insulting/gloating. Mistake for Rutter to do it. Not very classy by Brighton either. #lufc #mot
@MattySpeakman: Empty words from Rutter clearly! One good pay check after one good season and he’s fucked off to a club like Brighton. The absolute rat, zero loyalty, get gone 🐀 #lufc
@AidanLUFC09: Disappointed in rutter for that video ngl

@TBradley23: I refuse to believe Rutter has a clue what he’s been made to do on that reveal video by the way. He’s quite literally taking the piss out of us by doing it 😂 #lufc
