Jamie Vardy left emotional after scoring 200th Leicester goal on 500th and final appearance

Jamie Vardy was left emotional after scoring a 200th Leicester goal on what was his 500th and final appearance for the club.

In the words of John Percy, it was always going to happen, a trademark finish, trademark celebration and a fitting end to an outstanding career at Leicester.

He joined the Foxes from then non league Fleetwood Town in 2012. Some called it a risky signing. But he’s gone on to become a club legend.

As the players came out of the tunnel, a big display was on show at a packed out King Power, to thank Vardy for his achievements.

Then he scored in the 28th minute, great work from James Justin who won the ball back in his own half and ran to the edge of the box, slipped in Jamie Vardy who comfortably placed the ball between the legs of a defender and into the net.

Jamie Vardy came off with 10 minutes remaining to a standing ovation all around the ground. The Premier League, FA Cup and golden boot winner given a guard of honour from his team-mates as he made his way off the pitch.

Jamie Vardy said after the game: “It’s been amazing, it’s been a rollercoaster, it really has.

“But the good thing is there’s been way, way, way more highs [than lows] and I thank everyone. I never thought we’d be in the Champions League, we’d win the league, and we’ve all been there for a reason.”

“They’ll be fine, they’ll be fine,” said Vardy when asked about how Leicester go forward without him.

“We’ve got a good squad and we’ve got all the youngsters coming through as well. I’m glad I’m not them, because football is a killer mentally and I couldn’t do it all again if I’m honest.

“But I’ve enjoyed every minute of it and I look forward to keeping an eye on the club I love.”

Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy speaking to Premier League Productions, on Jamie Vardy’s final home appearance:Β “If you score your 200th goal on your 500th appearance, then you are a great one.

“He has been a unique player and person for this football club. In years to come we will realise we were part of this moment. H’es a character as well, there’s a story and an edge to him. He’s a great captain as well.

“We were motivated to do well for Jamie, but also to get more momentum after the Southampton win and the point against Nottingham Forest. It’s some positives towards the end of the season.”

On Kasey McAteer’s goal:Β “It’s great he, deserves that, like all of us he’s had a season of ups and growns, he trains well and works for the team, his effort was rewarded today with a great goal.”

Leicester City midfielder Kasey McAteer speaking to Premier League Productions:Β “It’s been a great day, scoring in the Premier League is what dreams are made of, especially for the first time. I’m happy I could play my way into the game and get on the scoresheet as well as [Jamie] Vardy.

“It’s classic Vardy, it’s spoken about how he always delivers and that’s what he’s done for 13 years at this club. I don’t need to tell you how well he has done. To play with him and call him my team-mate is an honour. I was buzzing he got his 200th goal.”

On the future of Leicester City:Β “Jeremy Monga and Jake Evans been training with us – at 15 and 16 years of age, they’ve done incredibly well. The more they work with us they’ll only get better. We look forward to next season and hopefully coming straight back up again.”
