Tottenham confirm signing of Mateus Fernandes in club record £85m from West Ham

Tottenham Hotspur confirm the signing of Mateus Fernandes in a club record £85m deal from recently relegated West Ham United.

The 21 year old joined West Ham in August 2025, on a five year deal for a transfer fee reported at over £40m, becoming the club’s third biggest signing.

After 38 appearances, scoring 4 goals, the midfielder leaves for Tottenham, who finished 17th for the 2025/26 season, a place above West Ham, with 41 points, two points above the drop zone.

Mateus said, as per the Spurs website: “I’m very excited for this next step. Spurs is a massive club and the Head Coach was a key part of why I have decided to join.

“When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game. I can’t wait to get started, to meet the fans, to meet everyone, and give everything for the Club.”

Sporting Director, Johan Lange, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Mateus to the Club.

“He is a player with outstanding technical ability, intelligence and maturity, and even at a young age, has shown he can perform consistently in demanding, high-pressure environments. We believe this is the right place for Mateus to take the next step in his career, working with our outstanding coaching staff and alongside an ambitious and talented group of players.

“I know our supporters will enjoy watching him, as he has the talent, mentality and work ethic to become a very important player both for the present and the future of Tottenham Hotspur.”

Head Coach, Roberto De Zerbi, said: “I’ve admired Mateus for a long time because he combines quality on the ball with the intensity and intelligence that are so important in the way we want to play.

“Despite his age, he already has good experience in the Premier League and has shown quality and consistency at this level. Mateus is comfortable under pressure, can progress the ball, works hard for the team and has the courage to make things happen in difficult moments. I believe this is the ideal environment for him to continue his development and I’m excited to start working with him.”

The Hammers said in a brief statement: “West Ham United can confirm that Mateus Fernandes has completed a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur for an undisclosed fee.

“The 21-year-old Portugal international departs having made 38 appearances and scored four goals for the Hammers after joining from Southampton in the summer of 2025.

“West Ham United would like to thank Mateus for his service and wish him well for the future.”

Mateus posted a message to West Ham: “Hello Hammers,

“The day has come for us to move forward, each taking a different path.

“I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this journey and to have become a part of your story.

“I’ve always believed that football is about people, and I’ve been lucky enough to meet some truly incredible ones along the way. From the kitchen staff to everyone involved in supporting the players, thank you for your kindness, dedication, and for making me feel at home.

“To my friend Jamo, Rob, Doctor Chris, Mr. Nuno, his staff and all my teammates, thank you for everything. I’m grateful for the chance to have played alongside world-class players, but above all, for having found friends with whom I learned, grew, and enjoyed every single day.

“To the fans, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Even during the toughest moments, when the results weren’t what we all hoped for, your support never faded. Your loyalty and passion meant more than words can express.

“Football is full of challenges, victories, and disappointments. Although we didn’t achieve the goals we set ourselves this season, I’m incredibly proud to have represented this club and to have fought alongside such amazing people.

“This club will always hold a special place in my heart. I’ll carry with me every lesson, every memory, and every moment we shared.

“I wish the club and everyone connected with it nothing but success, and I’m certain that better days are ahead.

“Thank you for everything ❤️⚒️”

Here’s how fans reacted as Tottenham confirm the signing of Mateus Fernandes in a club record £85m from West Ham…

@AndyJPhipps: No hard feelings. He always put in a shift and was a very good player for us. I won’t lie and say he was much loved (he wasn’t here long enough) but he applied himself well. Plus, Spurs are the ones that paid up. Man U took the piss. It’s a deal that suits everyone.

@lindacole48: Considering none of you were good enough to keep us up maybe it would be nice to stay and help get back up rather than jumping ship and especially to there 😡obviously no high ambition 😡

@JaiP72: Very interesting quotes here from Lange and RDZ mentioning ‘continuing his development’ – we’ve sold it to Mendes that he’s here for a while and we won’t stand in his way.

@Ben_White86: So excited for this signing – we’ve been crying out for centre mid who can collect on the half turn and has a great passing range for so long… but he can also win the ball and carry. Superstar potential. Fernandes & Tonali at the base of midfield is a monumental upgrade.

@KevJStewart: It has begun. Who cares about cost? We’re backing a good manager with signings he wants and that’s all we’ve ever asked for. A revitalised defence, the beginning of a revitalised midfield, and hopefully a revitalised attack still to come. Welcome, Mateus… #COYS

@tomrenniesoccer: Good luck to Mateus Fernandes. No question he gave his all during the disaster of last season. Disappointing that we won’t see him flourish in claret & blue. I think there’s a £100m+ player there in a couple of seasons.

@tommywathen: So, Mateus Fernandes has joined Spurs for £85m. He was a fantastic player this season, but I’m not sorry to see him go for that price. In less than 12 months, we’ve doubled his value while also being relegated. A nice profit for the Hammers in the bank 🤑
