Ian Evatt says he was left emotional by the support shown by Bolton Wanderers fans full time after abusive messages sent pre-match.
It was back to winning ways for the Trotters on Saturday, winning 5-2 against Reading, Dion Charles producing a 28-minute first-half hat-trick with pressure eased on the manager.
Prior to that game, Bolton had gone four League One games without scoring. Thankfully for them, Josh Sheehan put a stop to that 12 minutes into the weekend’s match with a free kick.
Kyle Dempsey also got on the scoresheet with minutes of the second half remaining. Ben Elliott and Sam Smith tried to spark a comeback for the Royals, but Bolton were too strong for them.
Evatt thanked fans for their support after the game, and was clearly taken aback by it. Some of the Bolton fanbase were generally quite embarrassed at a banner displayed before Saturday’s game, reading ‘Evatt Out!’

“It made me emotional because I care deeply about everything associated with this club,” he said, per The Bolton News.
“It has been really hard, really, really difficult for me, personally. My 12-year-old children have received things that they shouldn’t have received and that is very upsetting for me. It is part of the industry we are in and I have to cope with it and be strong enough to lead.
“I have tried to do that this week. We had a discussion on Thursday about not losing everybody and it was clear to see there that we haven’t, there was a togetherness and it meant the absolute world to me. It humbled me, made me very emotional, so thank you to them.”
“We have some brilliant forward players, Aaron Collins and John McAtee came on and helped us and they are going to be huge for us, moving forwards,” Evatt added.
“I just felt that this was a game where we were going back to what we know. Those (Charles and Adeboyejo) two know each other so well, they have had a lot of success together.
“People forget that in the second half of last season very rarely did we have them fit together. When they are fit, they are a handful and difficult to play against.”

Ahead of the Carabao Cup game against Arsenal, he said: “It’s something we can all enjoy off the back of a good performance on Saturday.
“We can go there with the pressure off and just know this is as tough as it gets and go there humble enough to know that there is zero expectation and no-one thinks we’ve got a cat in hell’s chance.
“But what we can do is go and learn about what it takes to be either a manager or a player at that level. We will go there and give it our best shot and see where that takes us. We are going to do our best to be competitive and hopefully we can make it an enjoyable experience, not just for us but for our supporters who are going down in their numbers again.
“The only way they will enjoy it is if we give them a game and we are capable of doing that, I have no doubt about that. Are we capable of winning? Probably not, but we are capable of being competitive and showing flashes and glimpses of what we are and who we are as a team right now. We’re looking forward to it and hopefully the players can go there and execute a good performance.”
“We’ve won two cup games to enable us to have this opportunity to go to Arsenal and give everyone a great night and a great experience and for the club to make and have some significant finance off the back of it. We have had to earn the right to do that, which we’ve done, and now it’s down to us to go and enjoy it and show them what we can do,” he told Wanderers TV.
“We want to go there and be effective, be aggressive, be intense and play the way that we play. We need to maybe tweak one or two things but take it to them and be the best version of ourselves and see how far that takes us.
“Everybody will want to play, I have no doubt about that. But we know what’s more important. Again, that’s no disrespect to the competition or Arsenal but Crawley on Saturday is a more important game for us.
“There will be some rotation. We need energy. We are at our best when we play with energy and we saw that, in particular in the first half on Saturday, that we’re hard to stop when we play with that energy intensity and aggression.”
Here’s the reaction on Twitter with Ian Evatt emotional by Bolton fans’ support at full time after abusive messages to his kids…
@BoothyP: Don’t like Evatt the football manager that’s fine. It’s football. No issue with that.
But there is an element in our fanbase who love to spout about his personal appearance/life regularly on here so it’s not a shock the same “fans” would go after his kids & family. Scumbags
@WandererSmurf: The perpetrators need to look at themselves, learn that they are the problem not the victims & get help. Because there will never be an occasion in any football match that justifies targeting a child of a manager, player, staff member or indeed a fellow fan 🤯 #bwfc
@Loubie2302: Whoever’s sent things to his kids need to be named and shamed! 🤬
@BoltonMick58: He needs to name the people who sent abusive messages to his kids
@lewisjw15: That’s an absolute disgrace that people are saying things to his kids. Scum.
@phoward1974: The fact his kids have received abuse is disgusting. Whoever it is, shoild be identified and banned from watching Bolton for life. They are not Bolton supporters. They are scum.
@Will_In_Bolton: Lowlifes – The End
@MatthewRid5506: Who ever has targeted his children need their head testing seriously
@BWFCL8N: “Part of the industry” is it fuck. Whatever your opinion you don’t go after someone’s family, and never target a fucking child. Grim demons.
@cwatt957: Why get his children involved absolutely pathetic 😡
@BwfcIncognito: constructive criticism is fine of course but a massive line has been crossed when you go after his children. very worrying that so called fans have done that. utter vermin. #bwfc
@BoothyP: This is vile targeting his kids but when we have “fans” who target Evatts appearance and dig out his personal life at every opportunity this comes as no surprise whatsoever. Nailed on its one of those “fans” involved in this who love to see Evatt & Bolton fail. Scumbags.
@pattfurey: Absolutely fucking bang out of order, sending children abuse over football will never be on despite how you feel about a man and the job he’s doing! Hang your heads in shame, you are no fans of football or my club!! #bwfc
@kelllyj1982: We must never accept that managers’ children or families being contacted is “part of the industry” it is not. Anyone who partakes in that is scum. Footballing gripes to the manager 💯 but it shouldn’t be personal attacks ever & especially never to other parties linked to him
@jack1995barnes: That’s absolutely disgusting. As Bolton Wanderers fans, that’s not were about. We are a family club and always have been. Whoever that was needs to be severely punished! #bwfc
@simsamsuk: Seriously people targeted his Children???? They are not Bolton fans, this man dragged us up from league two, how dare they, I feel sick that so called bolton supporters would co this
@matt_ecky: If any of you are sending abusive messages to anyone’s family (let alone kids) over an under-performing footy team, then you are truly tragic cunts. Fucking grow up #BWFC
Ian Evatt’s children being sent stuff in the personal attacks towards him this week is just not okay. Let’s not do that. It’s football at the end of the day. #bwfc
