Ian Culverhouse leaves St Albans to become King’s Lynn boss just days before FA Cup tie

Ian Culverhouse leaves St Albans to become new King’s Lynn boss just days before the big FA Cup First Round tie against Burton.

He begins his third spell as head coach of the Linnets, joined by assistant Paul Bastock. But St Albans have since expressed disappointment, noting they had asked King’s Lynn not to approach the pair until after the match, but the request was ignored.

Culverhouse replaces James Rowe at the National League North club, currently 19th with 14 points from 14 games played. Interim manager Joe Simpson expected to remain in a broader role.

St Albans meanwhile sit 10th in the Isthmian League – Premier Division with 16 points from 11 games played.

KING’S LYNN STATEMENT:

King’s Lynn Town Football Club is pleased to confirm that Ian Culverhouse has returned to the club as Head Coach, with Paul Bastock assisting him in the dugout.

This will be Ian’s third spell at the Docherty Walks Stadium, having previously guided the club to back-to-back promotions and into the National League last time around. We welcome back both Ian and Paul to familiar surroundings.

As we enter a new chapter, the club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Joe Simpson for his commitment and leadership over the past month. Few people embody the spirit of Lynn like Joe. His professionalism and loyalty to step up in a challenging period have been invaluable.

Club CEO Bal Srai said:

“Joe has given his all for the club during his time as interim Head Coach. He has shown immense dedication, and a genuine care for the badge. On behalf of everyone at King’s Lynn Town, we would like to thank Joe for steadying the ship and leading with dignity. He has earned the respect of everyone inside the club – players, staff, and supporters alike.”

The club can also confirm it hopes Joe will continue to play a role within the football structure moving forward, and discussions will continue with him regarding a broader position at the Docherty Walks Stadium.

With Ian and Paul now in place, the focus turns fully to the pitch and climbing the league table. Now is the time for unity. We must stick together – players, staff, supporters, and the wider community. Your support will be crucial as we begin this next stage of our journey, starting with this weekend’s visit to Southport.

ST ALBANS STATEMENT:

St Albans City FC is disappointed to confirm that Ian Culverhouse and Paul Bastock have departed the club in order to join National League North outfit King’s Lynn Town.

The club asked out of courtesy if King’s Lynn would not approach Ian and Paul until after the FA Cup First Round tie, however this request was ignored and Ian and Paul were given a deadline to reply.

After reflection, and despite their hearts being with the club and the fact they would have loved to be in the dugout at Burton, Ian and Paul decided to leave City due to a variety of reasons including travel and these new roles being full time positions.

The club thanks Ian and Paul for their work and wish them the best for the future.

An update will be provided as soon as the club can confirm a new management team.

Here’s how fans reacted as Ian Culverhouse leaves St Albans to become new King’s Lynn boss just days before a big FA Cup tie…

@OffTheLineBlog: @stalbanscityfc asked if Culverhouse and Bastock take up their post with #KLTFC *after* their big FA Cup tie at #BAFC. That request got turned down. I don’t like that. It doesn’t sit well with me. Hopefully St Albans City negotiated a higher fee for the early release.

@ThatBrit_: This guy running off and abandoning a club when a better offer pops up? Well i never!

@Brxd_99: Wasted no time announcing it after a terrible result at Curzon but what an appointment and hopefully it’s as successful as the previous spell 🤞

@andyh2602: Shocking conduct by both of them & the club concerned !! 🐍😠

@joeofthemiller: Right before a first round proper tie is so shit from them. Biggest of 🐍 s

@Joseph_Oakman17: You relegated us then left us to potentially rot in step 3 🐍🐍🐍

@harryramp: Although the timing is not great the Saints will be better off without his boring brand of football

@Leasky_1_5: No other man I would want to dig us out of this mess…welcome home to the king ❤️

@AlanLathwell: Bastock giving it the big ‘un when he came back about how much the club meant to him. Don’t ever bother showing your face down at CP again!

@tudorarmyfan: Get @bobbyquinton in now! You will soon be glad they left if you do.

@RichThomo08: The fans deserve a decent appointment after everything else we’ve been through. Tempt Robbie Simpson out of retirement.

@sammy_morley46: Absolutely gutted, just before Saturdays game too 😩

@davidcoster: Culverhouse is basically the non league Steve Bruce anyway. Shit football, always fucking moaning, punt & run merchant. You lot all wanted Noble out but at the very least he tried to keep the round white thing on the flat green thing.

@_mb188:
94 wins
42 draws
65 losses
2 promotions already with the club, comes into the club 4 days before the last time came back in 2018.
fuck this could be good

@renny_overton: Can’t wait to see all those Lynn fans who slagged them off while they were at Boston, have to say now

@paulblackhawk: Good riddence then! Who want people at a club who dont want to be here. Plenty of managers im sure would love the role. Tbf wasnt pulling up too many trees were they?

@muzayrg:
‘Despite their hearts being at the club’
Their hearts have never been at the club🐍🐍
