King’s Lynn Town sign a prolific striker in Jonathon Margetts who’s scored 136 goals in 139 games over the last four seasons.
It’s important to add that he has netted a total of 33 goals in 30 games for Matlock Town during the 2023/24 season, however, that figure changed to 28 in 28 due to the games against Marske United being expunged.
A huge signing for the Linnets, bound to score goals and deserves this chance, having spent the last few seasons in the 7th tier of English football.
Now he’s ready to test himself at a higher level once again having previously done so, but reignited his career back in non league.
The 30 year old began his career with Hull City, but struggled to make a first team appearance, so he spent much of a two-year period with the likes of Cambridge United, Tranmere Rovers, Lincoln City and Scunthorpe United.
He then fell out of contention in the professional game where he then turned out for Gainsborough Trinity, Harrogate Town, Stockport County, Altrincham, Southport, Boston United, Matlock Town, Tadcaster Albion and Frickley Athletic, Belper Town and Stamford.
But it’s in the last four or so seasons that he’s turned into quite the goal machine, that stats proves that.
While he would have no doubt caught the attention of many clubs, it’s National League North strugglers King’s Lynn that have got his signature.
His new club currently sit 21st in the table, with 27 points from 28 games played, 3 points from safety, but sides around them have games in hand.
Margetts leaves Matlock, who sit 15th in the Northern Premier League – Premier Division, with 31 points from 23 games, firmly stuck in mid-table.

KING’S LYNN STATEMENT:
The club are delighted to announce the signing of prolific striker Jonathon Margetts, subject to National League approval.
Margetts signs on a permanent deal from Matlock Town, having previously played for Stamford, Boston United and Scunthorpe United among others in a career spanning ten years since coming through the Hull City youth system.
Last season at Stamford, Margetts bagged 57 goals in 64 appearances, having seen a return of 25 from 18 matches the season previously at Belper Town. In the 20/21 season, he netted 26 times in 29 appearances for Frickley Athletic.
Adam Lakeland was particularly pleased with the latest addition to his squad, saying โIโm delighted to bring Jonny to the club. He is a proven goal scorer having scored goals throughout his career at a number of clubs, particularly in recent years where his goals-to-games ratio is unrivalled. He is a natural finisher, goal-seeker and has excellent movement in and around the final third.โ
โAs well as goals, Jonny brings a wealth of experience to the group which is something you are always looking to add, and having recently turned 30, I believe he has a few good years left in him and that we are getting him at the peak of his career.โ

MATLOCK STATEMENT:
Striker Jonathon Margetts has left the club to join National League North side Kingโs Lynn Town.
Margetts, 30, has been in outstanding form since re-joining the club last summer, scoring 33 goals in 30 games this season โ that figure recently adjusted officially to 28 in 28 after the records from matches against Marske United were expunged.
The Linnets have offered Margetts the chance to return to full-time football and Gladiators boss Martin Carruthers explained he was offered a package with which the club couldnโt compete, and that Margetts deserves the chance to play at a higher level once again.
He said: โIโm absolutely gutted to be losing the services of Margs. Heโs had an unbelievable season for us with his goals and contribution to the side. Heโll be irreplaceable.
โHeโs turned down a lot of interest this season and had been loyal, but this opportunity was too good to reject โ to go back full-time doing something he loves was something he and his family couldnโt refuse, and we certainly couldnโt compete with that offer.
โItโs a sad day for everyone involved with Matlock Town FC but we have to respect his wishes and we canโt stand in any playerโs way when opportunities like this come along. We wish him well and I hope he goes and smashes it.
โThatโs football and the level weโre working at and we have to be positive, dust ourselves down and try and get three points on Saturday.โ
Everyone at Matlock Town FC wishes to thank Jonathon for his terrific impact at the club and we wish him every success in the future.

A well worked move results in a beautifully whipped cross by @jrjohnston27 to the back post where @JonoMargetts finishes delightfully to secure all win for the Gladiators on derby day.
As you can hear, Manager @Gandiman9 enjoyed that ๐
