Hereford issue club statement on alleged incident at match against Darlington

Hereford issue a club statement on an alleged incident at their National League North home match against Darlington on Saturday afternoon.

A Bulls supporter was escorted out of the Len Weston Terrace with the game was stopped for several minutes in the second half after there were allegations about his behaviour.

The fixture finished in a 2-1 victory for Darlo, Evans getting the hosts off top a good start 11 minutes in before Liddle got one back for the North East outfit just before half time and then Lambert got one minutes into the second half.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Hereford FC can confirm that an allegation of a supporter making homophobic comments towards a Darlington player during today’s game has been received.

We have immediately launched a full investigation and will work alongside West Mercia Police and Darlington FC to establish what happened, and we are therefore appealing for witnesses to come forward with information of today’s incident.

If you were witness, please email Hereford FC General Manager, Jamie Griffiths jgriffiths@herefordfc.co.uk with details. Information received will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.

Hereford FC will not tolerate any form of homophobic abuse and anyone found guilty of using such language will be banned from Edgar Street.

Darlington came from behind to win at Hereford for the first time in 26 years, the last time the Quakers won at Edgar Street came when they went a goal down in the 1996 playoff semi final, and on that day they came back to win 2-1.

Fast forward to Saturday’s meeting and they didn’t play well at all in the first half wit Hereford going into the lead, but after Jack Lambert hit the bar with the most audacious of long range efforts, Ben Liddle got the scoreline level, before eight minutes into the second half, Lambert netted the winner after being set up by Jacob Hazel.

Alun Armstrong’s side managed to hold on against some frantic Hereford pressure for the points, and the result now means it’s their fifth away win, the same number as the whole of last season.

As several of the players said afterwards, Quakers would have lost that game last season, but now they have won their last three away games in a row — at Telford, Kidderminster and Hereford – to go second in the table, a point behind leaders Brackley.

Twitter users reacted as Hereford issue a club statement on the alleged incident at their match against Darlington…

@billyla10356995: Bit harsh to ban him

@MattQuinn75: Not really. Believe it or not society has no place for this sort of thing. If it’s confirmed to be true, a ban from Edgar Street is the least of his worries.

@Caitlinx1003: Be different if it was our fans to your players 🤷‍♀️

@guyc_01: Ban the person then.

@_jamiek: Ban them

@ianindarlo: I hope Hereford’s statement is more genuine than @SpennymoorTown who had a similar issue they failed to address

@james9101985: They swept it under the carpet

@Darlo_1883: Now for Jack Evans who was trying to convince us all how the comments were justified

@Colzoss: Well done Hereford. 👏👏

@rhysphillips14: Doesn’t make sense. Can’t imagine the Darlington players acting like that for a homophobic comment, either way ban the bloke

@a49bullsfan: We don’t need knuckle draggers like that supporting the club.

@MattQuinn75: Great to see such a quick response.

Neil Davies: In the interests of fairness. The club might also wish to investigate the conduct of the Darlington players goading the home fans and deliberately provoking responses with their gesturing, posturing and damn right unprofessional behaviour. How is it right that their number 9 can engage paying customers of the football club in this manner. Its his workplace and behaviour goes two ways. There other players were at it too, before and after this incident. The number 9’s posturing arrogant behaviour after the 90mins in front of the LW Terrace was insulting. Players should be held accountable as well as fans.

Stew Matthews: Hereford should be a welcoming club for all…sadly we have a core group of fans who go out of their way to let the club down. Pyros being smuggled into grounds, pitch invasions, inappropriate comments…the list goes on. Let’s hope whoever it is that said this is found and made an example of! #FootballFamily #OneClub

Ryan Lewis: Good. What is wrong with some people

Neil Stallard: Hopefully the club take just as swift measures to relieve gowling of his job

Kathryn Jenkins: Not welcome at our great football club… in my years of supporting the team I’ve never heard of any such abuse but it’s intolerable!!! 💯💯💯

Daniel Hall: It’s great to see the club taking swift action over this

Guy Cooke: Ban the person then
